Any initial thoughts about the murder? Why might Maya think it was her fault?

it seemed like it was an execution. Maya may think it was retribution for what happened at the Syrian border or that it's her fault because she ran to get help (I don't believe that scenario, btw)

I didn't know why she'd think that at first. Later it seemed like she felt like she could've saved her husband if she hadn't run away. After that, Shane suggested that it might've been intended for Maya so she must've done something to cause that.

She may have suspected she was the target.

I agree. I think she was the target and feels guilty about that.

It does appear to be a lot of survivors guilt that she has. So far in these few chapters the seeds for many different scenarios have been planted!

There are obviously details yet to be revealed and these may give some kind of at least seeming culpability. But I also think that in those situations it is near impossible not to have some measure of survivor's guilt.
