PROCEDURES FOR REPORTING SPAM

Distinguish between the following, and flag the highest level of the violation:

-- Type 1: Irredeemable commercial spam: make sure to flag the member's profile, as well as the spammy activity. This type includes things selling strollers, pharmaceuticals, live-streaming sports games, porn, and/or trying to create traffic/links to sites for such things. Sufficient profile flags will automatically result in temporary suspension and deletion of the member's activity, so use your profile-flagging powers wisely and carefully.

-- Type 2: Teachable moments: DO NOT flag the member's profile, but DO flag the violating activity (e.g. self-promotional Talk post, group, or local venue). This type includes promotional activity that violates the Terms of Service (TOS), but where the member is potentially redeemable, e.g. overzealous authors, overzealous publishers, or other members with small TOS violations but who are otherwise using the site legitimately. These cases should be reported to staff (by sending a message or email to staff and/or or posting on this thread), so the member can be taught how to use the site.

Specific procedures:
-- Overzealous authors or publishers (these fall under type 2): do NOT flag the member's profile. Report to staff here or privately. You can also send the member a polite message pointing them to the terms, mentioning the "no promoting" language, and pointing them to the Do's and Don't page for authors: http://www.librarything.com/about_authors.php
-- Suspected sock-puppetry to promote a book, write fake reviews, and/or stack ratings: do not flag the profile, but report to staff here or by message, so staff can investigate. This is a serious violation for which members can be permanently banned.
-- Profile flags for commercial spammers only (type 1): On the member's profile page, click on the "report for spam" link, then follow instructions to flag the member. Again, this is only for commercial spam, not for "overzealous" authors, publishers, or booksellers, which should be reported to staff instead. See Talk post: http://www.librarything.com/topic/85810
-- Spam or promotional posts in a Talk topic (type 1 or 2): flag the post as an abuse of the terms of service.
-- Spam or promotional groups (types 1 and 2): flag new groups using the "flag this group" link.
-- Spam lists: report in this thread, and flag the member if it's commercial spam.
-- Spam works (type 1 spam): flag the work as spam on the work's editions page, and then vote on proposed work spam. Make sure to read the guidelines before proposing or voting, especially for what is not spam. Voting page: http://www.librarything.com/spam_works.php
-- Spam in a review (type 1), or an explicitly promotional review (type 2): flag the review as an abuse of the TOS, using the red flag.
-- Spam or promotion in "published reviews," or other CK fields (type 1 or 2): post here and/or delete.
-- Spam or egregious promotion/advertising in venues or events (type 1 or 2): post here and/or delete. Note that authors are permitted to add events for their books.
-- Spam in book links / quick links: post here and/or edit to remove spam.
-- Spam author names listed on a work: No current procedure. Tim has asked us not to change CK to indicate spammers, and not to combine spam authors together.
-- Not sure if it's spam? Post here, and explain why.

Please note that Tim has asked us not to use either CK or the combining system (whether works or authors) for spam fighting.

In an unpleasant, and yet related matter, there's that horrid group back that attempted to use multiple accounts and group creation some time ago.

Here's the group (which already has three flags, but needs many more).

http://www.librarything.com/groups/hopeteam61

I should probably drag poor Lorannen in on this. As I recall, it took staff intervention last time out.

Only this "topic" from that group managed to find its way into Spam.

Personally I am in favor of allowing kids to be rowdy, as long as they're doing it in their own group and not trying to take over others. I can't see any of the deleted messages, but I can see several flagged messages that are not inappropriate. Either way, it definitely does not count as spam.

The previous group that was removed by Loranne was using attacking language and racial slurs. That's why they were shut down.

ETA: a little digging says they're a 6th grade class, so they are probably mostly underage.

First post here.
I've started seeing posts in Talk about "escort services" in the United Arab Emirates. I've looked at a couple of the profiles and they look like sock-puppets--very recently joined, no books, no other activity. I flagged the profiles as spam and it seems that this was correct--yes? Not just a case of overzealous promotion of a book, but clearly "commercial" spam. To the extent that it's commercial--I doubt if prostitution is legal in the UAE.

They're wasting their time pushing escort services at me anyway. I live in Qatar, and given the current state of affairs in the Gulf, the likelihood of me going anywhere in the UAE for long enough to take advantage of an "escort" is pretty close to zero. Not that I'd do it anyway. I'm a married man, getting on in years, and I'd like to enjoy good health for the time I have left.

Okay, either I'm losing my mind, or the spam filtering is broken in some odd way.

When I look at the Spam folder, there are no new updates since last Tuesday. I've logged off, and back on. I've used different browsers. I've used my other account. It's not my imagination. It hasn't updated. I haven't seen an uptick in spam (or much of any, to be truthful, probably owing to my not paying attention to most groups).

I took a screen shot, even, which I'm about to upload to my gallery.

I'm just so confused.

>204 karenb: Thank you for this. I was a bit disappointed to not see response from anyone, and beginning to think that there was a party going on somewhere else, and that I wasn't invited.

Okay, okay, I didn't really believe that, but I do want to point out that things were still getting in there that shouldn't be, since I retrieved one (by turning it green, of course). That's when I thought that things looked weird, and started to check on it. Compulsively.

I may make a bug report later. We'll see.

Spam seems to come in waves nowadays. Perhaps the protections here are so robust (partly because of member participation) that it has become less of a target while they go after other places.

>201 Lyndatrue: You mean the "Spam?" designation on Talk, right? It wasn't showing any new threads for a while? Spam does tend to come in waves, in my experience. I think there are probably a couple things going on here, but the big one that jumps out at me for the last couple weeks is that we've been getting hit hard by some Russian bots over the last couple weeks (detailed here). They're not posting to Talk, just trying (and failing, every time) to log in using credentials that were swiped from elsewhere. Our devs have been busily thwarting them lately, which is likely a significant part of why we're seeing less spam lately. Now, technically speaking, I don't know what exactly that means! But I would be very surprised if this hasn't resulted in further locking things down, resulting in less spam.

210Lyndatrue
Nov 13, 2018, 12:43 pm

>209 lorannen: Thanks for the response. I will gently disagree with your surmise, although I grant you that there's been a cessation of sorts by beating back Russian bots. It's just that they aren't your only source. Mumbai call girls are back to getting trapped, as of late last night, so I'm not sure what was up. I'm just happy to see things settling down, whatever the reason.

No worries, and thanks for killing the profile mentioned elsewhere.

>210 Lyndatrue: Yeah, I see what you mean, looking closer at the dates. I'll raise it at meeting today, just in case there is a simple explanation, like devs manually killing those threads themselves (seems unlikely, but you never know!).

>211 lorannen: Be sure you mention >205 norabelle414: as a possibility. I'm certainly willing to give that strong credence, and no, I'm not kidding. Dewali, combined with smacking Russian bots, is a serious possibility.
