Just read Child of Fire by Harry Connolly. It was good supernatural suspense, except I gradually realized that what I first thought was creating a background, was actually catch-up information from a previous novel. The mass market pb I bought said nothing about earlier books, and I was on a camping trip so couldn't check. I hate it when they don't make it clear that something is part of a series with earlier items.
(edit) I was unfair: just read more about the series, and this was the first published, though a prequel has been e-published. And apparently after the 3rd entry, it was announced that no more would be forthcoming -- so I don't have to worry about the endless-series syndrome. :-)

>11 rshart3: Well anyway, I'm with you on not being told that there are earlier books in a series. Once, I picked up a book in a library and a librarian very kindly helped me to hunt for the first book in the series; but when I got it home and started reading, I realised it was the second book and (I think) the book I had picked up first should have been the one to start with.

Frustrating, but not as bad as buying one further along in a series. Because then your committed (or I am, being a completionist) to buying the whole series and you can't even find out if you like it until you've bought and read the first one. I have one on my shelves that's the 5th in a series (or the 2nd in its sub-series). Hmph.

>6 seitherin: I read Witchmark this month, too. I wanted to like it more than I did. It should have been a homerun for me, with the fantasy-twist on a non-traditional real-world historical period and the mystery aspect, but I got hung up with irrational little pet peeves.

I have certain tropey elements in stories that trigger an instinctive negative response for no good reason, and the existence in the book of the magical race of beings who are perfect and exquisite and practically shine like the sun with the power of their awesomeness tripped one of those kneejerk responses pretty hard. I was pretty bummed out about it. :)

Just finished a trip to Fairyland in The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland..., and moving on to a more futuristic dystopia in The Drowned Cities.

I've finally reached the Stone of farewell after a long slog, and will be continuing To Green Angel Tower soon.

>18 Niko: I had the same kind of knee jerk reaction to Mr. Perfect in Witchmark. I thought it a trite way to introduce romance.

Finished The Poppy War by R. F. Kuang. Unlike every other review of the book I've read about it being a fantasy retelling of the historical struggles of China, I found it to be about nothing more than a personal pursuit of power to achieve revenge against perceived wrongs. Not very inspiring.
