A Few Royal Occasions edited by Sue Bradbury 1977

This is another FS oddity. It was issued in 1977 outside the normal publishing programme, and may have been used as a membership encouragement gift as well as being sold.

It is a delightful little book of only 64 pages, and can be easily read in an hour. The contents are a series of contemporary amusing anecdotes about the lives of 14 different members of the British royal family for over 1000 years, from Vortigern to Queen Victoria. The extracts are from earlier FS publications, and cover everything from galas and victories to coronations and executions, giving an insider’s view of what actually happened at that time.

There are no illustrations other than the unattributed colourful cover, but each story is in itself a literary illustration of court life and intrigues. The selection is by Sue Bradbury and there is an introduction by John Letts.

The book was issued with no slipcase or dust-jacket, and appears to be paper bound. The imprint is that of the Folio Press, which sold Folio Society books to the general public outside the FS membership plan during the 1970s. It has the FS logo on the spine, but the FP logo on the title page. At 22.2 x 13.2 cm. it is a small volume, and ideal to take with you on a trip of an hour or so to while away the time on the plane or train.

Folio 50 (no. 418.5) confirms as much but this photo from the Ardis Books Folio Society Archives appears to show a dust jacket.

'Some copies with the Folio Press imprint on the title-page were published by Michael Joseph at £2.95, in a printed dust-jacket bearing Joseph's imprint "for the Folio Press"' (Folio 60)
