A few years back, my son Sam formed a record label with a couple of high school buddies.

Here's a compilation of some of the music they've produced recently.

https://gradeschoolrecords.bandcamp.com/album/show-tell

Sam helped out with the filler interludes and contributed lead vocal on Track #6, "Blast Off", which has been chosen for the soundtrack of an upcoming documentary about a Flat Earther who built a rocket to decide for himself if the Earth was actually round.

A gifted film-maker AND musician...my kid gets his chops from his mother's side of the family (obviously).

The cover art of my latest book, THE ALGEBRA OF INEQUALITY. Due out in the next 2 weeks:

That's beautiful, Cliff. Is it going to be a hard cover with a book jacket with that art, or is that going to be the softcover art?

Softcover, with a matte, rather than glossy cover.

Each time I create another book, my art designer, Chris Kent, seems to take it to the next level.

I'm a fortunate guy.

And I'm delighted to assure readers, the book is just as good on the INSIDE...

Intriguing title and the cover is beautiful. Do you give Chris some idea of what you would like or does he draw inspiration from your work?

I'm very hands-on with the interior/text design, I have a very clear idea of what I want, very strict level of control.

When it comes to the cover, however, I try to give Chris artistic leeway. I present him with the cover art, tell him a bit about the book (he never reads it in advance) and leave him to it. He likes to send a flurry of designs at the beginning and once I start zeroing in on a certain "look", he very quickly adapts and within two or three attempts, he usually has the final version.

We're very different people but he seems to understand almost intuitively what I'm looking for.

...by the way, the title of the collection is derived from a line from a Donald Barthelme short story.

After attending a software testing conference in Brighton back in March, I now find I've been immortalised in cartoon form!

Gotta get that book. Any hope of my finding it in a bookstore or should I just bite the bullet and shop Amazon? (I’m trying to buy books from non Amazon sources whenever possible.)

ETA oh I see I can mail you a check! How charmingly old school! Expect it soon.

You can order it through any bookstore, from Barnes & Noble to Powell's. Stick with the indies, if you can.

That's the nice thing about the printer I use, they grant me access to markets worldwide, a listing in the vast Ingram catalog (along with millions of others)...

My son Sam handled the camera work on this odd, post-apocalyptic short film:

>17 CliffBurns: Enjoyed the flick! looks like they did a great deal of work with a small budjet. Wonderful nature vistas in the flick, are those nearby? Beautiful country.

The badlands of southern Alberta, near Drumheller. Amazing country, ancient and otherworldly. Lots of dinosaur bones found in them thar hills.

A tiny crew, a micro budget and those folks did just fine, didn't they?

Proud of what that little band of brothers and sisters accomplished on a shoe string. Points to great things ahead.

Our son Sam shot a music video for some friends of the family and Sherron provided a "Cranky" puppet theater. Wonderful stuff:

Another gem from my film-maker son, Sam. This one is an experimental piece, three minutes of compelling weirdness:

Finally saw my name in print ... in the acknowledgements, but that's something. Friend of mine published his first novel Finding the Way: A Novel of Lao Tzu. Trouble with seeing my name attached: makes me wince each time I spot something I told him about that he didn't fix in editing. Ah well, small errors notwithstanding, it's still as great as I told him it was.

Also enjoyed his travel blog about his recent trek through Peru: https://waynengwrites.com/peru/

In a few days, pot will be legal in Canada. But does that mean anything substantial, a change in the paradigm? I doubt it:

>24 CliffBurns: “people walking around and pizza sales shooting through the roof (at least initially),”

Reminds me of a road trip to Florida way back in the 70’s when I was first exposed to cable tv and pizza delivery - a modern miracle that made me realize what a backwater i lived in.

A modern dance company in Saskatoon will be using forty minutes of my spacey, ambient music for an upcoming performance.

I've worked with these gals before and am always amazed by what they come up with.

I've got a little piece up with the Center for Humans and Nature; try out some thoughts on rats for your holidays!

Katy, your piece on rats was great fun and it's nice to see their tarnished reputation given a polish. Personally, I admire the little buggers for their survival capabilities--I have a hunch rats/rodents will, one day, inherit the earth from the stupid, reckless primates who currently rule the roost.

Thank you!! I have the same suspicions; I'm guessing the rodents and the roaches will one day engage in a giant celebration.
