Susan B. Anthony

I've started adding Susan B. Anthony's library from the Library of Congress. (See also messages 43-45 of this thread.)

Volunteers welcome.

I'll take a few - do you want to split it up by search page result (looks like the default is 25 results per page)? Divvying-up-method's up to you :-)

I sorted it alphabetically by full title. Did the first 8 before it ran into trouble. I'll send you her password; her Wikipedia page gets a lot of junk, and LT is also public.

Yeah that's perfect, same thing we did with TJs.

Please note the caveat I just posted in the other thread. Not everything in the Anthony Collection belonged to Susan B.

I started running into a lot of trouble with the 9th and 10th books on the list; but you'll noticed that the first 8 were all published in the 19th century -- in fact, except for one published in 1810, they're all from the second half of the 19th century, when she was most actively pursuing the vote. Susan B. Anthony died in 1909 or so, so plausibility extends into the first few years of the 20th century, too.

Here's another thought: any ideas on a tagging structure? Or should we not try to create one?

What happened with the 9th and 10th? Errors, or just not in LC? Something different?

The add page couldn't find them in the Library of Congress -- it came back with no results. Even after I cropped the title (which I thought might help).

Is it Ernestine Rose, Address on women's rights (1851) and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, address to the legislature (1854)? Just want to make sure the results are the same.

AHA! I got it. The add page doesn't like apostrophes. Try "Address on womans rights" in the title and it should work fine. That may also be the problem with the second one, or it may not like the dash in "New-York".

Yes; I specifically one of them being by Ernestine Rose. I'll get back to work (until the co-worker who covers the phones in my absence returns from lunch, at least).

I've found the most useful and easiest way to add is by doing "author, first couple words of the title, date" (without quotes). That usually pulls up the right edition very quickly. Without the date, there might be many. If the title's weird at all, I try to find a distinctive phrase and use that.

Yeah I suspect it's the apostrophe thing. If that doesn't work, let me know and I'll keep trying.

Actually, it was the punctuation. I finished the first page, though the last one, Bacchus gave me too many results (I found the right one with the subtitle, "An essay on the nature, causes, effects, and cure of intemperance").

I'm going to be zipping away to class for the afternoon, but I'll be around this evening. If you don't mind them not behind entered exactly in alphabetical sequence, I'll take results pages 5-7(sorted by full title) for now (leaving some space for others before).

I'll get started on page 2.

I've done pages 2 and 3 (or up to book # 75), sorted by Full Title, with a few exceptions. I e-mailed them to myself and I'll post when I can root them out of the e-mails (this probably won't be until after 9 tonight, though). But there are a few other oddities I'd like to spit out for anyone else who'd like to lend a hand.

First, this book has its language listed as "Dutch." I doubt that's correct, but does anyone have any other comments?

There are a few items with "from old catalog" in square brackets -- the kind used in touchstones -- after the author. I'm not familliar with the Library of Congress and the code it speaks. It clearly isn't part of the "official" versions of author' names, but I don't understand what it is.

Third, and finally, does anyone know if this should be combined with the rest of Thomas Paine's Common Sense? Or Common Sense and the Crisis? It's clear that Common Sense and probably The Crisis are included, but I'm still trying to figure out what the "social aspects" of this work are.

1. No, it's not Dutch. Weird. I switched the language.
2. "Old Catalog" is an obnoxious LC problem (we found alot of them with TJ's catalogue). The brackets just have to be edited out. I'm not sure why it happens.
3. I would combine it with Common Sense and the Crisis, if at all.

101-175 are entered ... I'm going to keep going for a little while with those beyond 175, but will post wherever I stop.

Updated to note that I've finished up through 225. Not too bad, this one!

That's what I'll do for the Paine -- I was already leaning that way. I just didn't want to be accused of that "infernal idiocy" thing people keep mentioning.

The information for the books I couldn't add from page three is below. Either I got no results no matter what I tried (including the "LC Control Number" which works under certain circumstances), or for the last one, came back with all sorts of results that all looked equally wide of the mark.

I've had to replace square brackets with {{double curly brackets}}.

I'd commend the LT staff on their speed, but ther was a bit of a mess on another thread that got started in much the same way.

Edited to Add: I'm in Brooklyn, which is stuck in the same weather pattern that Boston is. But then, it probably beats Rochester.

Okey-doke. I've done through the end, so I think all that's left are the results on page 4? Is that right? Do you want those, or shall I add them?

I noticed (after I'd been going awhile) that you've been pasting the "full titles" into comments ... I generally put them into the Summary field instead and then use that as the recommended view, but if you'd rather do it this way we can. I don't know why the title field's character limit has gotten so much smaller recently, but for these older libraries with their long titles, it's troubling.

I found a few records which were duplicates (same copy of the same book, but two different records) and did not catalog both ... that will get us closer to the 272 number.

Once they're all in, we'll have to talk tags!

I'll handle page 4, but probably not until I'm at work tomorrow (I have a light job). My browser here at home uses "tabs" instead of multiple windows, so I don't have the option of a quick Alt + Tab switch between the LOC and LT.

Yup I have the same problem (I usually end up using one Firefox window and one IE window) so I can move the 'panes' around.

Now that I've got Alt+Tab available, I started entering page 4. #'s 81 and 83 looked like duplicates, so I left them out. I got into the Hearings before I got logged out a second time and thought better of continuing just yet. Boy, is the logoff problem a nuisance!

Oh, and the subtitle of Gerrit Smith. The Story of a Noble Man Life can't possibly be correct.

Yeah it sure is. Thankfully my browser pops up a little "one-minute warning" window that lets me refresh before it loses the search completely (... but usually I miss the window and have to start over ...). I guess I see why LC would need a short timeout (lots of users) but it is definitely a pain.

Not just the LOC logoff. That's annoying, but at least I know it's coming. I meant the LT logoff problem.

Oh!. That is a weird one. I don't think I've ever had that happen to me. Yes, that would be even more annoying and bizarre.

It seems to be happening mostly to IE, but to have it happen twice within five minutes is just weird.

Go ahead. I just looked at my notes, and I was at #94, so it's hardly going to fill your afternoon. I handled the full titles as I went on that page, which is probably how I ended up getting bumped twice in rapid succession. I'll see if I can come up with some ideas for a tagging structure.

Alrighty - I'll add them, and then will go through and do some more of the full titles where they got cut off (I still don't know why that's started happening, but I wish it would stop).

And I'll do two or three logoffs' worth of tagging the obviously abolition/suffrage stuff as abolition/suffrage.

Cool. I think I've caught all of the "full title" issues. What other tags are you thinking? There are a few fiction and a few poetry things, then some biographies ...

Oh ... meant to ask too in the last - do you think we should add some more info to her profile page? Up to you, but thought I'd throw it out there.

I've got a skeletal tag structure on the non-fiction:

* Things clearly abolition-related are so tagged.
* Likewise, things clearly suffrage-related are also so tagged.
* Things not clearly suffrage-related, but clearly women's rights-related are tagged "woman's rights", which seems to be the form in use at the time.
* There are a few odd titles that are covered by the last two tags I've put in. About half a dozen are tagged "temperance" and all of three are tagged "education".

Not sure what to do about the biographies, fiction, and poetry, though.

Perfect. Makes sense to me. As for the others, we could always just use the old "biography," "fiction," "poetry" if it comes to that ...
