This is a regretful post for me to make! Unfortunately, someone spilled a little bit of an oil-based dipping sauce on one of my clothbound books. It's not a Library of America book, but it's much the same type of cloth. I immediately got a wet cloth and blotted it, but unfortunately the stain is still there. I know that people talk about using magic erasers, and those work very well for finger stains, but this is a very dark mark and it was created from very oily foodstuff resting directly on the surface of the book. While I don't expect that the book can ever be restored to it's original condition, is there any way that I can treat the cloth so that it's at least a minor discoloration? As it stands now, the mark immediately draws the eye as soon as you remove the dust jacket.
2Podras.
I hope this doesn't make things worse, but you might try a laundry spot remover; one of the spray-on products to remove stains before putting clothes in the wash.

>2 Podras.: That's a really good idea! Yeah, I'm not so worried about making things worse. It's underneath the dust cover either way, and I figure that a slightly different looking splotch isn't really that big of a deal compared to how it looks now. My biggest worry, to be honest, it damaging the boards underneath the cloth.
