Music producer Rick Hall died January 2 at the age of 85. His autobiography was called The Man From Muscle Shoals: My Journey from Shame to Fame.

President of the Mormon Church, Thomas S. Monson died January 2 at the age of 90. His books include Pathways to Perfection and Inspiring Experiences That Build Faith.

Israeli novelist Aharon Appelfeld died January 4 at the age of 85. His books include Badenheim 1939, The Story of a Life and Blooms of Darkness.

Author, song writer Rayya Elias died January 4 st the age of 57. She wrote Harley Loco.

Astronaut John W. Young died January 5 at the age of 87. He wrote Forever Young: A Life of Adventure in Air and Space.

Sculptor Betty Woodman died January 2 at the age of 87. Her works related to her exhibits include Betty Woodman: In Conversation with Barry Schwabsky and Betty Woodman: Theatre of the Domestic.

Journalist and former editor of The Guardian, Peter Preston died january 6 at the age of 79. His books include 51st State and Bess.

Former Prime Minister of Norway Odvar Nordli died January 9 at the age of 90. His books include Langs veg og sti and Min vei: minner og meninger.

Producer of children's television shows, Carole Hart died January 5 at the age of 74. Her books include Sooner or Later and Waiting Games (An Avon Flare Book).

Book narrator Katherine Kellgren died January 11. She can be heard on numerous recorded books including Pride and Prejudice, Another Pan, Second Sight and The River Knows.

Verse writer Jenny Joseph died January 8th age 85. Perhaps known best for her (not best) poem "Warning" about what she would do as an old woman and wore purple with a red hat. It's given here:—

Sportscaster Keith Jackson died January 12 at the age of 89. He wrote the foreword to ABC Sports College Football All Time All-America Team and
Sporting News Presents Saturday Shrines.

Politician and son of the late boxer John V. Tunney died January 12 at the age of 83. He wrote The Changing Dream.

Psychiatrist Dr. Ronald Fieve died January 2 at the age of 87. He wrote Moodswing and Prozac.

Curator Kynaston McShine died January 8 at the age of 82. His books include Andy Warhol: A Retrospective, Marcel Duchamp and Joseph Cornell.

Surgeon Captain Richard Jolly died 13th January 2018 aged 71. He took part in the liberation of the Falklands. He writings include The Red and Green Life Machine and a guide to British Naval Slang Jackspeak.

Baseball Hall of Fame umpire Doug Harvey died January 13 at the age of 87. He wrote They called me God: The Best Umpire Who Ever Lived.

Soccer star Cyrille Regis died January 14 at the age of 59. He wrote Cyrille Regis: My Story.

South African poet Keorapetse Kgositsile died January 3 at the age of 79. His work includes My Name is Afrika, Present is a Dangerous Place to Live, This Way I Salute You, To the Bitter End and The Word is Here: Poetry From Modern Africa.

Radio Producer Joe Frank died January 15 at the age of 79. He wrote The Queen of Puerto Rico and Other Stories.

Law professor Geoffrey C. Hazard died January 11 at the age of 88. His books include The Law and Ethics of lawyering and Cases and Materials on Pleading and Procedure.

Revered theatre director John Barton died January 18 at the age of 89. He was most famous for directing Shakespeare (though he also directed Greek and modern drama), and he frequently worked with Judi Dench. Among his books are Playing Shakespeare, The Hollow Crown, Wars of the Roses. and Tantalus Plays

Former CIA Director Stansfield Turner died January 18 at the age of 94. His books include Burn Before Reading: Presidents, CIA Directors, and Secret Intelligence and Secrecy and Democracy: The CIA in Transition.

Author Peter Mayle died January 18 at the age of 78. He is best known for A Year in Provence and Toujours Provence. :'(

Chef Paul Bocuse died January 20 at the age of 91. His books include Paul Bocuse in the Kitchen and Paul Bocuse's French Cooking.

Author Julius Lester died January 18 at the age of 78. His many books include To be a Slave, John Henry (Picture Puffins) and Day of Tears.

PR man Herbert Herb Schmertz died January 17 at the age of 87. He wrote Good-bye to the Low Profile:The Art of Creative Confrontation.

Actor Bradford Dillman died January 16 at the age of 87. He wrote Are You Anybody? An Actor's Life.

Soviet dissident Valery Chalidze died January 3 at the age of 79. His books include Entropy Demystified, To Defend These Rights and Criminal Russia.

South African jazz musician Hugh Masekela died January 23 at the age of 78. His autobiography was called Still Grazing: The Musical Journey of Hugh Masekela.

Ursula K. Le Guin, acclaimed feminist science fiction and fantasy author, died January 22 at her home in Portland Oregon. The 88-year-old authored many titles including the Earthsea Trilogy, The Dispossessed, and The Lathe of Heaven.

Chilean "anti-poet" Nicanor Parra died January 23 at the age of 103. His works include Poemas y Antipoemas, Antipoems: How to Look Better & Feel Great and Emergency Poems.

The Rev. Dr. Wyatt Tee Walker died January 23 at the age of 88. He wrote Somebody's Calling My Name and The Soul of Black Worship.

#24--my favorite of all poets is Parra. No one really comes close to his irrepressibility or his talent for subversion. Not that I have anything against Neruda or Mistral (both Chilean as well) who both won the Nobel prize but IMO Parra beats them both easily.

Punk era musician and songwriter Mark E. Smith died January 24 at the age of 60. His autobiography was called Renegade: The Lives and Tales of Mark E. Smith.

#26--and so ends the Fall--one of the best bands ever. Smith was its singer/songwriter and over the past 40 or so years if you were a musician from the Manchester England area there was probably a 50% chance that you played in the Fall at one time or another. Mark once quipping that 'if it's me and your grandmother on the bongos, it's the Fall' or words to that effect. Fucked up for me--it's Parra one day and Smith the next.

Furniture designer Wendell Castle died January 20 at the age of 85. His books include The Wendell Castle Book of Wood Lamination and The Fine Art of the Furniture Maker.

Journalist who chronicled Himalayan climbs, Elizabeth Hawley, died January 26 at the age of 94. She wrote Himalayan Database.

Ski bum Warren Miller died January at the age of 93. His his books include Wine, Warren, Women, & Skis and Lurching from one Near-disaster to the Next.

The founder of IKEA, Ingvar Kamprad died January 28 at the age of 91. He wrote Leading by Design: The IKEA Story.

Cartoonist Mort Walker, creator of Beetle Bailey died January 27 at the age of 94. His books include I’ll Flip you for it Beetle Bailey and Fall Out Laughing Beetle Bailey.

Art historian Nicola Gordon Bowe died January 4 at the age of 69. Her work includes Harry Clarke: The Life & Work, Wilhelmina Geddes: Life and Work and Art and the National Dream.

Journalist Robert Parry died January 27 at the age of 68. His books inlcude Lost History: Contras, Cocaine, The Press & 'Project Truth', and Secrecy and Privilege.

Irish poet Richard Murphy died January 30 at his home in Sri Lanka at the age of 90. His works include his autobiography The Kick: A Life Among Writers, as well as numerous works of poetry The Battle of Aughrim, The Mirror Wall and The Price of Stone. :'(

I had the pleasure of meeting him several times. While he was signing one of his books he commented that, "I see you have had the foresight to buy the hardback".

Daleswoman Hannah Hauxwell died at 91 on 31st January. She wrote several books including Seasons of My Life.

Art critic and historian Robert Pincus-Witten died January 28 at the age of 82. His many works include Roy Lichtenstein, a Drawing Retrospective and Postminimalism.

Author Haim Gouri died January 31 at the age of 94. His work includes The Chocolate Deal: A Novel and Facing the Glass Booth: The Jerusalem Trial of Adolf Eichmann.

Actor Louis Zorich died January 30 at the age of 93. He wrote What Have You Done? The Inside Stories of Auditioning, from the Ridiculous to the Sublime.

Political scientist and proponent of peaceful resistance Gene Sharp died January 30 at the age of 90. His books include From Dictatorship to Democracy: A Conceptual Framework for Liberation and
Power and Struggle (Politics of Nonviolent Action, Part 1) .

Professor Sir James Ball, an economist, died 15 January 2018 age 84. He wrote "An Econometric Model of the United Kingdom" and later in 1988 he wrote The British Economy at the Crossroads — the crossroads in question being whether or not to join the euro.

Nick Phillipson, historian, died January 24th aged 80. He wrote a major biography of Adam Smith Adam Smith: An Enlightened Life (reviewed here:- https://www.theguardian.com/books/2010/aug/14/adam-smith-nicholas-phillipson-rev... He also wrote a biography of David Hume David Hume: The Philosopher as Historian as well as a number of other works.

Central American poet Claribel Alegria died January 24 at the age of 93. A few of her works include Flowers form the Volcano, Luisa in Realityland and They Won't take me Alive: Salvadoran Women in Struggle for National Liberation.

I noticed because I have a couple of her books and I've owned one of them for more than 23 years, so I looked her up!

Cardiologist Dr. Isadore Rosenfeld died January 30 at the age of 91. His books include Symptoms, Doctor, What Should I Eat? and Live Now, Age Later.

Journalist Alan Hart died January 15 at the age of 75. His books included Arafat: Terrorist or Peacemaker? and Zionism: The Real Enemy of the Jews.

Geoffrey Best, historian, died January 14th 2018 aged 89. He wrote Churchill: A Study in Greatness, Mid-Victorian Britain, Churchill and War and War and Law since 1945.

Brian Sissons, geomorphologist, died January 20th 2018 aged 91. Works include The Evolution of Scotland's Scenery and The Geomorphology of the British Isles: Scotland.

Patrick Delaforce, a military historian, died January 22nd, 2018 aged 94. Apart from books about WW2 such as The Black Bull about the 11th Armoured Division in Normandy he also wrote some guidebooks to France such as Champagne on a Budget.

Named one of the five greatest photographers of the twentieth century Romano Cagnoni died January 30 at the age of 82. His books include Time-Life Library of Nations: Italy and Romano Cagnoni... I grandi fotografi.
