Lovecraft's Library

It's an interesting volume, but at least part of the reason I started Congreve instead of Lovecraft is that it's still under copyright; without Joshi's blessing, I would question the legality of dumping the heart of that book onto LibraryThing.

Iʻve long been curious about what kind of reading H. P. Lovecraft WOULD have been doing -- but not curious enough to certify what his own writing was like to read anything BY him. Am I missing anything, or am I better off WITHOUT a real knowledge of Lovecraft?

>4 rolandperkins: Read The Colour Out of Space and either At the Mountains of Madness or The Call of Cthulhu and then stop if you don't like him. He's the father of cosmic horror and inspired a lot of writers, but he's definitely not for everyone.

ETA: I think all of his work is public domain so you won't have to spend any money or make a trip to the library to sample him.

"At the Mountains of Madness" (closer to a novella I think) has been nominated for a group read over in The Weird Tradition group. No final decisions yet but it's quite likely it will make the cut. Come join us when the assigned week rolls around!

I think the original link was to https://www.librarything.com/work/460143 - somebody actually added these books some years ago, but we were unable to secure Joshi's okay to use the book, so the account is currently set to private.

I mean, theoretically, yes, but since there is more specific (edition-level) info in the Joshi book, and the library is already in LT (just currently set to private), I don't know that I would advocate spending the time on it ... I could take another go at Joshi, though, and see if he'll answer ...
