"Twelfth labour: Cerberus
The twelfth and final labour was the capture of Cerberus, the 3-headed hound that was guardian of the gates of the underworld. To prepare for his descent into the underworld Hercules went to Eleusis (or Athens) to be initiated in the Eleusinian Mysteries. He entered the underworld, and Hermes and Athena were his guides.
While in the Underworld, Hercules met Theseus and Pirithous. The two companions had been imprisoned by Hades for attempting to obtain Persephone. One tradition tells of snakes coiling around their legs then turning into stone; another that Hades feigned hospitality and prepared a feast inviting them to sit. They unknowingly sat in chairs of forgetfulness and were permanently ensnared. When Hercules had pulled Theseus first from his chair, some of his thigh stuck to it (this explains the supposedly lean thighs of Athenians), but the earth shook at the attempt to liberate Pirithous, whose desire to have the goddess for himself was so insulting he was doomed to stay behind.
Hercules found Hades and asked permission to bring Cerberus to the surface, which Hades agreed to if Hercules could subdue the beast without using weapons. Hercules overpowered Cerberus with his hands and slung the beast over his back. He carried Cerberus out of the Underworld through a cavern entrance in the Peloponnese and brought it to Eurystheus, who again fled into his pithos. Eurystheus begged Hercules to return Cerberus to the Underworld, offering in return to release him from any further labours."
Uh, oh, we have fallen behind! We still need 316 ROOTs to reach our goal.
I would like to suggest that if there are readers who signed up and haven't reach at least 25% of their goal and also haven't posted anything in the last 6 months should be removed from our totals. I know that some people have RL issues that prevent them from continuing, but should our goal be affected by them? What do you think?
Below is the current list of members that have identified a ROOT goal for 2017 and how many books they read by the end of November.
If anyone's number is incorrect, please let me know and I will make the necessary adjustments.
So go out there and dig those ROOTs.

Thanks Cheli for all that you do for us in the ROOTs challenge. I didn't realize that we have fallen behind. I will do my part to get more ROOTs read!
4CurrerBell
My thanks to you too, Cheli. I don't know how much more I'll be able to contribute since one of the current ROOTs is War and Peace, which I really do want to get finished by year's end for the Napoleonic Era on the Reading Through Time group. But I've got at least a couple other ROOTs I should be finishing as well.
5Tess_W
TY, Cheli! I agree with the removal of stats of those who have not been active in the last 6 months.
6majkia
Agree about removal of non-active members. And thanks for running a great thread all year long.
7Jackie_K
Yes, so do I - they can always request to be added back in if necessary. I've currently got 4 on the go and finished one last night, so hoping I can do my bit to get us to the finish line! I've added the one I finished to all tickers (or at least I will once I've posted this) (It was Rebecca Solnit's Men Explain Things To Me and was excellent).
9CurrerBell
I agree with removal of inactive participants.
11floremolla
hope to read a good number this month but it won't make a dent in the shortfall - agree removal of completely inactive participants.
12enemyanniemae
I AM going to reach my goal, even if I have to listen to books while I sleep.
13majkia
>12 enemyanniemae: lol. go for it!
14leslie.98
I also agree about removing the inactive members.
And I add my thanks to Chèli to those of >3 Familyhistorian:!

15fuzzi
I agree with removing inactive members. Like New Year's resolutions, many are excited about a challenge, but RL can get in the way, and challenges can fall by the wayside.
16fuzzi
Took twelve (12) unread ROOT books off the shelves this afternoon, and updated my personal ticker.
17Robertgreaves
Can I suggest people with less than 10% be removed immediately and people with more than 10% but less than 25% be messaged and asked whether they want to continue and then removed if they don't reply within a week?
18CurrerBell
>17 Robertgreaves: Assuming it's not putting another burden on Cheli. She's done so much already, and messaging like that could interfere with her RL.

Margaret Atwood, Bodily Harm
1st for December, 76/75 to contribute past my goal.
Don't know how much more past my goal I'll get though, not with War and Peace (Pevear-Volokhonsky translation) that I want to finish by year's end for the Reading Through Time Group's fourth-quarter Napoleonic Era and to get myself my 20th for the year on the Big Fat Book Challenge. I'm only through the first two of W&P's 17 parts, so I've got a way to go – and I'm also reading (and ER reviewing, non-ROOT) The Girl in the Tower for Reading Through Time's December "Fractured Fairy Tales" read.
So I've got some work cut out for myself over the next few weeks. Fortunately, I don't really celebrate the holidays except for church and a day-visit to some friends. And W&P is a ROOT.

Thanks for doing the numbers, Chèli. I shall do my best to read more ROOTs than last month.
22benitastrnad
I finished one title for December. Georgiana by Amanda Foreman. That was a celebrity biography of one of the most famous women of the 18th century and I thought it was a rather dry effort to chronicle the life of a very vibrant woman. But now it is off my shelves and on my ROOT list. Huzzah!
23benitastrnad
This morning I decided to Pearl Rule a book. In the Shadow of the Ark by Anne Provoost is a novel that I have been wanting to read for a long time. To my surprise I found it in recorded form at the Tuscaloosa Public Library, so I snatched it off the shelves. However, after giving it 85 pages, I Pearl Ruled it. (Quit reading) It just wasn't catching my attention and it seemed to be going nowhere slowly. It is one novel that is going back on the shelf for somebody else to read. But not me. Life is too short.
My paper copy - it is off my shelves and ROOTed.

24cyderry
>23 benitastrnad: I think the quickest I ever pearl ruled a book was page 13 for Lockdown. Normally I love Laurie R. King's books but this one was written from different viewpoints and jumped from one to another so fast that it drove me nuts. I knew there was no way I was going to be able to finish it so I just stopped before I got too far.
26enemyanniemae
>23 benitastrnad: >24 cyderry: >25 majkia: Yes indeed. I could kick myself when I think of all the times I slogged through a terrible book or one that I simply did not enjoy only because I believed that I HAD to finish what I started. I became a convert when I realized how many books are out there and even if I could read one per day, that would only be 365 each year. I will usually give a book 50 pages unless it is super-dreadful and then it gets 20 if it's lucky. On rare occasions, I will put a book back on my shelf if there is a possibility that I am just not in the mood for it.
27benitastrnad
#26
Sometimes I am just not in the mood for a book, and like you said, it goes back on the shelves. I doubt that will be the case with this one. I tried it and it just wasn't working. There are other books I would rather spend time reading, so it will be onward and upward to the next.
At least it got ROOTed.

I did ROOT another book yesterday. I finished the YA non-fiction book Superman Versus the Ku Klux Klan: The True Story of How the Iconic Superhero Battled the Men of Hate by Richard Bowers. It was YA and I read it over my lunch hours, so it took me a month to read it, but it was a very well done non-fiction for grades 5 - 9, and I learned something from it as well, so this one was a winner.
29fuzzi
Added another ROOT to the stack, though this one I'm keeping...
Night Without End by Alistair MacLean
Gripping tale of survival in a harsh environment, with some intrigue and "who-done-it?" mixed in, with quite good results.
Solid book by the author, and definitely recommended.

Finished my first ROOT of December: Doctor Who and the Androids of Tara, by Terrance Dicks. All tickers have been updated.
32martencat
I was doing so well in the first half of the year .... Both with reading ROOTs and not acquiring potential new ones.
Happy to announce that I finished my first ROOT since September and am now contributing to reducing the group deficit.
My ticker has been updated but I haven't touched the group totals.

In order to get closer to my goal, I'm reading as many "one-day" books as I can this December...books that I can finish in one (or maybe 2) days. So far in 5 days I've finished 1 book started in November, and 5 books read these first 5 days of December. Tickers updated.
34fuzzi
>33 kac522: I'm doing that challenge, too!

I've just added two very short kids books to my total - nos 2 and 3 for December and 54 and 55 overall for the year. I've updated all tickers.

Today's One-Day Book: Bones & Murder, short pieces by Margaret Atwood.
38fuzzi
Last night I read Betsy & Tacy & Tib, the second book in the Betsy-Tacy series. It's an enjoyable read, most suitable for younger readers but good for an adult "quick" read as well.

I'm determined to get more ROOTs done this month, and last night I almost finished a Lord Peter Wimsey book of short stories, Striding Folly. I've read two of three stories, and unfortunately I'm underwhelmed.

I finished another ROOT over the weekend. Murder in the Marais by Cara Black. I was surprised to learn that this mystery novel was written in 1999. I thought this series was something new. Well, newer. But it is almost twenty years old.

I've read The Chilbury Ladies Choir by Jennifer Ryan. My next and probably last ROOT for the year will be My Last Continent.

At the moment it's showing:-
292 ROOTs required to reach target of 3471.
If the group read 3000 (rough guess only) up to November that equates to 272 a month?

I've got a couple more I might finish before the New Year, though I'm planning on starting Juliet Barker's Wordsworth biography quite soon, and that's one that's almost as heavy a doorstopper as her Brontë biography and will carry me well into January.

Merry christmas everyone!
I've just finished my 74th root of the year, so I'm confident I'll reach my goal of 75 roots!

I've added two more ROOTs to my personal ticker: The Return of the Soldier, by Rebecca West; and A Suitable Lie, by Michael J. Malone. I haven't touched the group tickers.

Belated season's greetings to one and all ROOTers! RL was a bit rocky for the second half of December but resolved in time for Christmas. :)
Reading was a bit haphazard too - only two ROOTs to report so far this month. Dead Babies and A Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovitch - neither was very festive but take my total to 62/60. Hopefully another couple will be rooted by the year-end.

>77 Jackie_K:. That is my dilemma, too. Last year our council funded a new library and it is a very pleasant space, facing our domain. By supporting the library I also would effectively be reducing my TBR by not buying those books on my wishlist. I seldom read them straight away when I buy them, where as I read them promptly from the library.
124Jackie_K
I've added what is likely my final ROOT for the year (#58 overall, #6 for December) to all tickers. It was The Optician of Lampedusa, highly recommended although a harrowing read.

I’ve updated my personal ticker to include my December ROOTS, but haven’t touched the group ticker. It looks like I won’t be reaching my goal of 25, but I got pretty close with 22. I might be able to squeeze one more in, but definitely not three.
126CurrerBell
Virginia Hamilton, The Magical Adventures of Pretty Pearl
9 for December, 84/75. I've got some reading I'm currently doing, but I don't know if I'll finish any of it by year's end.

Finished another audiobook ROOT; my thread & all tickers updated. I have another halfway done & a mystery I just started but they may not be finished by tomorrow night... even if they aren't, I am very pleased with my progress this year with 130/100 :)
130Familyhistorian
I added another 3 ROOTs for a total of 11 ROOTs for December 64/50 for the year. I just wish I could read that many ROOTs in one month for a regular month instead of the end of the year.

Great job to all our ROOTers!
I'm working on my last book of 2017, a ROOT, but not sure if I'll finish by midnight.
Happy New Year to all, see you in 2018!

I'm finishing the year with 40 ROOTs out of 50. But I managed to finish the year with three novels written in Japanese so I'm counting it as a strong finish to bring in the new year.

I finished the year with 18 more reads and I updated the ticker.

I am just getting back in the saddle after two weeks with no inter-net access. I managed to finish two more books from my TBR pile. Climbing the Mango Trees by Madhur Jaffrey and Murder in Belleville by Cara Black. I’ll get my December totals to you in a minute.

I had 8 books read from my TBR shelves. No ticker updated.

Okay everybody, I'm trying to finalize our numbers for 2017.
If you are using the same ticker for 2018, I need to know what your final count was in 2017.
Thanks Cheli

I have added one more ROOT which I didn't enter before Christmas because I was still grappling with my new laptop. But since we made our goal, it doesn't really matter. Thanks for a great reading year!

I am so sorry for the inconvenience, Cheli.
We have had such horrible illness here in our household since before Thanksgiving. But my total ROOT reading on the year was 90 & I have just now updated my ticker. It should show by tomorrow.
Thank you for all you do.
Happy ROOTing in 2018 to one & all.
