The Seventh Labour of Hercules The seventh of the labors of Hercules sent him to Crete to capture the Cretan bull, which was said to be the father of the Minotaur by Pasiphae, wife of the Cretan king Minos. By one account, the Cretan bull was the beast that had carried Europa from Phoenicia to Crete for Zeus. In other myths, the bull was sent by Poseidon to Minos,to be sacrificed following the king's promise that he would sacrifice to the god anything that rose from the sea. But Minos, struck by the animal's beauty, sacrificed in its place another bull, thus provoking the god's rage. The sea god then in revenge drove the animal wild, ravaging the crops and orchards of Crete.

Hercules captured the beast after a lengthy struggle. He brought it all the way back across the sea to Tiryns, to present it to Eurystheus. He then set the beast free. It then roamed around Laconia and Arcadia, crossed the Corinth Isthmus and ended up in Marathon, to be later captured and killed by Theseus.

Ooh! Love this page -- great graphics. Love the statue.

Could it be I'll read and finish more than one book this month? I was unable to accomplish any reading last month. So, I'm a book behind on this year's goal. First read for July was The Rosie Project. A complete joy to read. For anyone requiring a buck-you-uppo, this is the book I recommend!

Just thought I'd give you all a head's up on how I'm doing. The doctor believes that I have a pinched nerve in my neck. He gave me some steroids, muscle relaxers, and heavy duty pain killers. He also sent me to Physical therapy. I thought I was getting better until Friday when the therapist started pushing my left arm up and up and up! Now I feel like I'm back at the beginning and have to start all over again. At least the pain levels are lower but still not fun. At the start of this roller coaster ride pain levels were off the chart, now on a scale of 1-10 they're only an 8.

On the other hand, Mom is doing great and hopes to be out of rehab by the end of the summer.

I finished two books last night. I knew I was close on both of them, but didn't realize that the novel I was listening to on my commute was so close to being done.

Ready Player One by Ernest Cline - somewhat of a disappointment after all the hype
Gas City by Loren D. Estleman - a great example of the crime noir subgenre

For the sake of moving the thread a little closer to automatic turn over to the new month, I will add one more post to the thread.

The ROOTS I read for the month are as follows:
Map of Fates by Maggie Hall - July 4 - I counted this one because it is the second installment in a series I have had on my shelves for a long time.
Assembling California by John McPhee - July 13 - read for the June - non-fiction challenge on the natural world
Charmed Children of Rookskill Castle by Janet Fox - July 15 - listened to as my commute book - children's mystery/fantasy fiction
Summerland by Michael Chabon - July 21, 2017 - my lunch book at work
Ready Player One by Ernest Cline - July 31, 2017 - wanted to get read before the movie came out
Gas City by Loren D. Estleman - July 31, 2017 - listened to as my commute book - good solid crime/noir fiction

Oh, and I forgot.

I also read a book that didn't qualify as a ROOT, Borderline: the Arcadia Project by Mishell Baker - July 26, 2017 - this one was good enough to make me find the sequel in the library. And, I Pearl Ruled Kushiel's Dart by Jacqueline Carey, I just couldn't get into it, so after 125 pages in a book 913 pages in length, I ditched it. I figured that I had given it a fair shot. I didn't count either of these as ROOT's for this project even though Kushiel's Dart has been on my TBR list for years. At least I could remove it from there.

Hello everyone! Actually, I have been having a little trouble updating my reading ticker lately, although I seem to have gotten it worked out now. But I do feel like I'm still playing catchup a bit.

Due to everything that has happened with me just in the first few months of the year, I can already tell that my reading total will be significantly lower than it was last year. Although, I'm not too worried about that just yet!

July's reading total was much lower than I was expecting. I read seven less ROOTs than last July, so it obviously wasn't the best month for me reading wise. However, I do have high hopes for myself next month. Anyway, in keeping with the group theme, here are my totals for this month:

Ancient Oaks Pruned: stands for older books read from my TBR pile: 0
Young Saplings Pruned: stands for newer books read from my TBR pile: 1
Trees Replanted: stands for rereads from my TBR pile: 0
New Seeds Planted: stands for additions to my TBR pile: 7
Trees Transplanted: stands for books that were donated: 1

I have only dealt with my own personal tickers, never touched the group ones.
