Still reading The Beautiful Mystery.

Started Devil's Bridge which I picked up on sale the other day. It's an Alexandra Cooper book who I think of as Nancy Drew grown up. They're a bit silly and they don't waver from a typical pattern, although this one is a bit. I can read it in a couple days and be entertained.

Visiting my parents and raiding my mum's collection of Rebus novels. I have to read Even Dogs in the Wild before I leave; it's signed, so it doesn't leave the house ;)

I finished up The Delicate Storm by Giles Blunt last night. Set in Northern Ontario during the winter it has a great sense of setting. I also enjoyed the connection of the mystery to the FLQ crisis of 1970.

I just loved The Last Policeman series by Ben H. Winters. The thread of this story is frightening and uplifting; even with the end of the world approaching, one man believed he had a duty to his profession. The reader is spellbound right up until the last page.

Am still at my parents' place in NH. It's been an long, trying, stressful week, but maybe things will get better. My reading and mom's hardly overlap at all, but I scrounged a PD James, a Michael Connolly and now a Jeffrey Archer - The Eleventh Commandment. After this though, I'm back to the iPad or going to the store.

Confession Time: I've been skulking about in this topic for years as a nonmember gathering authors to check out. It has been a goldmine for new names and a confirmation of all my old favorites. I thank you all for posting. Particular thanks go out to the person who mentioned Archer Mayor's Joe Gunther series (I've only seen one posting in all these years). 27 nuggets so far to be read in order. This has been the best find for me since Henning Mankel a long time ago. Thanks again!

The Xibalba Murders by Lyn Hamilton
#1 Archeological Mystery series
4 ⭐️

What a nice start to a series. I enjoy anything archeological and mysteries, so this was an interesting read. The main character, Lara McClintoch, is a recently divorced and former owner of an Antique Store in Toronto, Canada. Amidst her new university studies, she receives a call from her old friend and former antiquities buyer, Dr. Castillo in Mexico. He wants her to help him hunt for an possible Mayan artifact, which survived burning by the Franciscans back in the 17th century. Dropping her studies Lara heads to Mexico and stays with family friends who own a small hotel. Before getting to speak with Dr. Castillo, he is found dead. Lara is determined to figure out what it was that might have gotten her friend killed. The story weaves in Mayan history, especially that of Xibalba, the Mayan land of the dead. She visits museums, small towns, and archeological digs in her search. A very interesting fast moving story. I can hardly wait to read the next in this series. However, I wish it were in hardcover, as I'm not a fan of paperbacks.

Looking forward to the second in the series The Delicate Storm though it seems not to have quite so enthusiastic reviews as Forty Words.
