I'm sure I screwed up somehow, but I was having trouble finding information on this topic. How can I separate the bonus short story from the novel in which it appears? I'd like to give it its own people/character list and important places list, etc.

I'd also like to know because it would handy for separate entries for stories in short story collections and anthologies.

Do I use work-to-work relationships to show that it appears in A Likely Story by Jenn McKinlay?

I've separated it.

It should not be entered in work-to-work unless you are sure that it appears always and only as a bonus in that book.

>2 MarthaJeanne:

I would disagree with the "only". If short story A is in novel B and collection C. Then there should be a work-to-work relationship showing A is contained in B, and another showing A is contained in C.

I agree with the always of course. If A is contained in B then all copies of B should contain A.

I would hope that the present-day paperback, kindle, and audio versions of novel B contain short story A, but I haven't seen them and can't be certain. Nor can I be certain that any future editions of novel B will contain short story A.

I have had modern editions of late 19th and early 20th-century books which specifically state that they have not included short stories that were included in the original editions. (I've usually given them away when I've obtained the earlier editions.)

In such a case, should I state that short story A appears in the 1910 edition of novel B?

Sometimes a book can unintentionally mislead the reader. The introduction to my 1967 edition of The Making of a Marchioness by Frances Hodgson Burnett stated that it did not contain the sequel. As soon as I finished it, I eagerly grabbed my early 20th century edition of The Methods of Lady Walderhurst. I quickly realized it was part of what I'd just read. I suppose the editor or publisher changed his/her/their mind(s) and forgot to change the introduction.

If I hadn't had the sequel, I'd have gone on thinking that the 1967 reprint contained only the first book.

Please, how do I add a title and an author to my default book cover for separate entries for short stories, novellas, and novelettes?

You will need to use one of the designs that has it incorporated. You cannot just add it to any default cover. If you want to use your own design or one of the ones with no title on them, you will need to make a cover for each work separately and upload it.

AnnieMod -- thank you. Sadly, that's not one of my woefully inadequate computer skills.

Please, under what terms would I search to find instructions on how to make a JPEG out of a title that I've typed in order to make a cover and upload it?

>8 JalenV: It sounds like you might want to start with a term like "screen shot", if you're just typing the title in a word processor or something. Or you could try (name of software) and "export" or "save as JPEG."

Is that the kind of help you're looking for?

You will need an image program capable of putting text on an image.
Then you can create a new image or use an existing blank book cover and type the title on that image. Then you have to save the image as jpg or png and upload it to LT.

I'd google: text on image freeware
To find a program and.or instructions.

You can maybe do it in ms paint, or on an online image editing app.

I've thought of doing that myself, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. Basically, you can use any graphics program (or app) that lets you type text and lets you save in JPEG format.

What sort of computer are you working with? You can create something simple like that in any basic paint software, such as MS Paint (which used to come with Windows) or something more advanced, like GIMP. I bet there are simple drawing/graphics apps for tablets, too. Does that help?

Thank you all. I'm using a 2007 Windows Vista laptop.

Turns out all I had to do was right click on any of the choices for default covers, chose "edit on LunaPic", watch the tutorial on text, and apply. My spacing stinks, but they're legible, and that's what counts with me.
