I'm hoping to plot out a walking tour of secondhand bookshops in the Melbourne CBD (Spring St to Spencer St, Flinders St to LaTrobe St). All contributions gratefully accepted. Please give, if possible:-

Street No, Street, upstairs/street level/downstairs, specialty or general, anything else relevant.

After a while of collecting, plotting and above all, visiting, a link to the map will be happily posted for all to view.

Jim

Good idea! Here's a few to start with:
Academic and General Bookshop, 259 Swanston St, Melbourne, academic and general (!)
City Basement Books, basement, 28 Elizabeth St, general
Hyland's Bookshop, level 1, 29-31 Heffernan Lane, transportation, military history

Thank you. Bring 'em on!

I cannot for the life of me remember the name of this bookshop but it's on Flinders St, just opposite the station, in between Swanston and Elizabeth Streets. Lots of books, floor to ceiling.

I've wanted to do this for Hobart, but I'm lazy. Why not chuck it up on google maps?

>4 dreamlikecheese: Yes, I know that one, skinny but quite deep?

>5 felius: I'm going to, but I thought I'd gather a few first off.

Jim, if you ever decide to expand to the inner north there are many excellent second-hand bookshops through Carlton, Fitzroy and Northcote.

Yes, I took a stroll up Brunswick St at lunchtime a few weeks ago... Yum! (some of the food shops were good too)

Maybe we need a seperate thread for Melb 2nd hand bookshops. Sydney's got one... can't have them having something we don't!

Hi Jim,
Several years ago, before LT came along, I put together a spreadsheet of all bookstores in Melbourne and surrounding suburbs (new and 2nd hand), collecting details from the phone book and various websites. My aim was to visit every one!

About 3 years ago I transferred all this info to a Filemaker Pro database, where I was able to keep a track of the books I bought from each store.

I still keep this database up-to-date, even though many of the bookstores have now closed, but LT is now my main record of my personal library.

Never quite made it to all the bookstores, but happy to email you my list if it will help with your map-making.

#4 - that's Flinders Books at 248 Flinders Street - terrific!

#7 - Yes, Carlton Secondhand Books, Swanston & Grattan Sts, is a real treasure trove.

Kill City Crime Books has just moved into the basement at 119 Swanston St opposite the Town Hall and I believe they have taken over the secondhand stock as well. I will have a look.

Every Saturday in the Atrium in Federation Square there is a Secondhand Book Fair. Great stock!

G'Day everyone,

Been away from the 'puter for the holidays (and loved it).

>5 felius: You seem to have snuck in between posts! Yes we could do that. Does the group think that's better than doing it here? It may be more productive (+), but it won't be so LT (-?)

>9 mproeger: Please do. See my profile for address.

>10 infosleuth: EVERY Saturday??? I didn't know that. Sheesh, another (1/2?) day in the big smoke when I'm supposed to be doing the tree change thing!

Happy New Year to all

>11 justjim: Well, I'd love to see it here, but I also think it should be available in some kind of geospatially aware format.

We've recently discussed whether or not this is something LT should do (provide a way for people to find & recommend local bookstores in a given area), though there are other features which are higher on the priority list at the moment.

Yes, Jim, EVERY Saturday at Federation Square. And there's more. All the details are at:
http://www.fedsquare.com/index.cfm?pageID=19&eventID=7
Worth several visits.

Sorry for ignoring this group (which I started!) There is a feature/function in beta testing which (if it is released) will make this concept obsolete.

Don't stop collecting names, addresses and specialities though, they will come in handy.

See Library Thing Local. Please put your own inputs to this thread into LTL.

This thread will be closed in 30 days.

I think that this sort of thing is exactly what Library Thing is about, and I would refer it to Tim Spalding, as something worth setting up. Or maybe it is already available, but in a slightly different form that we don't recognise.

I'll have a week to kill in Melbourne later this year and this is precisely what I'll be looking for :o)

You ever get any further with this Jim? Or is Library Thing Local the best option ? Will be in town for the Australian Open Tennis in January and keen to check out any second hand bookshops.I guess I just print out a city map and mark down the addresses of shops I can find at LTL.How far afield should I look? Carlton? Fitzroy?

Ozpierre, what part of Melbourne are you staying in? There are some good second-hand bookshops in the inner north.

Grub Street - Brunswick Street, Fitzroy
Alice's Bookshop- Rathdowne Street, North Carlton
Howard Bolton - Charles Street, Northcote
Fully Booked - High Street, Thornbury

There's one in Elgin Street Carlton, a bit expensive, and a newish one in Smith Street Collingwood, that I haven't checked out yet

ETA
Just checked. The Carlton so-so shop is called A Book Affair. A highly recommended shop in Swanston Street Carlton is Carlton Second Hand Books. Don't know how I've missed this one. Might see you there.

Thanks Pamelad
I pretty much have all those pencilled in except for Grub Street so thanks for that one.I am staying in the city.I see Howard Bolton is only open weekends so I might make a day of it on the Saturday around that inner north area(after I visit Federation Square ) I am sure I will find a nice spot for lunch over that way.

I'm glad I came across this post. I have a few days in Melbourne at the end of the month and visits to a few secondhand bookshops are on the menu.

Mmmm Kay Craddock! I remember getting mimeographed lists in the mail when I was at sea and telegraphing back top auction bids. Kind of like Palaeolithic eBay!

Two second-hand bookshops opened last year in High St Northcote, a block past the town hall on the left going north - Allsorts and Brown and Bunting.
