Challenging myself to read 75 from the list in 2020 to reach 960.

Just found this group, great motivation! I am trying to read as many of these books as possible, should be fun.

Notes

As a secondary challenge, I would like to complete a continent. I would like to look outside North America and Europe, not because they are hugely represented on the list, but because I would like to expand my reading. As a Spanish and Portuguese speaker, I think I should really go for South America.

Thought I could do with a new thread for a new year! I am now at around 620 books read, 400 more than when I started the first thread. I read about 50 books a year, but it is getting harder to find ones I want to read.

January reads:

1. - 3. The Poor Mouth, At Swim-two-birds and The Third Policeman
I didn't know much about the author, the style was certainly different and I did make good use of the end notes. I am glad I have read them and will probably go back later to read ones that are not on the list.

4. Shame
I am on the fence about this, I did enjoy the style, as I normally do with Rushdie's work, but there is something galling about reading a man talking about women's shame, no matter how sympathetic he is.

5. The Book about Blanche and Marie
A 1001 book sent to me, I liked this a lot and read it in one sitting. I enjoyed the unusual writing style as well as the characterisation of the main characters - based on real people (Marie Curie and a friend).

February:

6. Seasons of Migration to the North
A chance spotting of a 1001 book in the library. I didn't know much about it before hand, but found it an interesting read. Two cultures clashing, this has resonance today.

7. Like Life
A collection of short stories, quirky and thought provoking. This is part of my plan to read more female authors - especially ones on the 1001 list.

8. - 10. A trilogy of Raymond Chandler books.
I read The Big Sleep a few years ago, but decided to re-read it to refresh my memory. Marlowe is a wise-cracking detective with a penchant for getting himself into trouble. As with The Maltese Falcon, much of the charm lies with the protagonist, but as a woman reading the book in 2017, the female characters, especially, are caricatures. I also read Farewell, my lovely and The Long Goodbye.

11. Daniel Deronda
I kept this for a long day of travelling- definitely a good way of getting into this. There is a lot going on here, the author explores the life of British Jews and also the choices made in characters' love lives.

12. War and Peace
After over a year I have finished! I did enjoy reading this, part fiction, part history lesson, part human analysis. I am glad I saw the recent BBC drama, this helped with remembering who everyone was. I don't think it hurt knowing some of the plot twists, I would say it helped me get more out of the historical side.

March

13. Down Second Avenue
I got this through Bookcrossing, a 1001 book I knew nothing about. It is an autobiography, but I enjoyed the forays into language discussion. Written under Apartheid, the book shows the reality of a black teacher's life and the constraints of living under rules that class you as less than other people. Mphahlele also talks about the forced movement of people and the break down of the traditional family units. I am glad I have read this.

14. Memories of Rain
Another 1001 book, I am trying to read more female authors than male this year and chose 5 books from the list by women from Amazon as a treat. Such a sad, poignant book, I was caught up in the story and didn't want it to end. The book deals with the breakdown of a relationship between a British man and his Indian wife, who he met during the monsoon in India. The book reminded me that we never come as a completely blank page to any relationship, whether it be family or cultural influences or different expectations.

I have tried to read at least 52 a year since joining Library thing, also thid group has helped me find choose which books to look out. I think it is easier now to get hold of the books than it was before. I still only plan on reading 1001 over all as there are a number of books and authors that hold no interest for me.

15. Looking for the Possible Dance
There is not much of a plot to cling to, but the book doesn't disappoint for it. The main focus, in my opinion, is the relationship between Margaret and her father. It is this relationship that builds the template for her love life, with an on/ off again boyfriend, and with those around her. I enjoyed the interaction between Maggie and the boy on the train, I do a lot of my thinking when I am travelling, and a long journey gives you the time and space to figure out what is really happening. I liked the writing style and look forward to sourcing more by the author.

16. Thais
Hmm, not really aimed at me as an atheist feminist. It is a short book, but for me, it was absolute drivel. Saving the fallen woman, helping her find God, written, unsurprisingly, by a man.

There are a number of authors that have a lot of books on the list, such as Charles Dickens, I doubt I will go out of my way to read all of their works. Although, I would say I have rated highly most of the J.M. Coetzee books on the list as there is a good range of style in his work (I agree with Elizabeth Costello being taken off it). I read two of Michel Houellebecq books and I would run away from the third from the list if I ever saw it. I think there are some books that are quite difficult to find in translation. I read a lot, but I source most of my books from charity shops, which can limit my choice. I like seeing the reviews here, it has helped me decide whether to read a book, or even to push one up the TBR pile.

17. Crossfire
Bought second hand as part of my personal challenge to read more 1001 books written by women and it didn't disappoint!
Not my useful fare, this is part thriller, part sci-fi, part moral questioning. I loved the fact that the detective and the vigilante were both women, 3-dimensional and strong.
A woman with a strange gift comes across a group of young men stashing a body, after she intervenes, she realises they are part of a gang that have been preying on young girls. Killing the women, dumping the bodies and getting away with it. But if the law doesn't have the resources or the teeth to deal with such criminals, can those with the right powers? Do any of us have the right to go above the law? Even if it is to correct an injustice?
I found this gripping and thought-provoking. It does, as another reviewer wrote, bare resemblance to Stephen King's work, but the rich Tokyo backdrop and the well-drawn female roles set it in its own category. Highly recommended.

True, I didn't. I have read the "easier ones", got Ulysses on my Kindle, but am yet to get past the title page! You a fan? I liked the fact I could see how the earlier works started to deconstruct.

Another author I like is Jane Austen, but I think it was only right that some of her work was removed from the list.

I liked the Austens but agree that there are some authors with way too many books on the list imo. For example Coetzee, McEwan, Dickens and Hemingway. Of course they deserve to be represented, but with domanu books?

18. The Crying of Lot 49
A 1001 book, not very sure about this one. There were element of interesting experimental writing, but there wasn't much to hang a plot on.

19. Main Street
A satirical work based around the life of Carol, a woman who wants more than a small town life. At times, Carol was hard to like, but on the other hand, her frustration was an echo of that felt by many women at the time.

20. Essays in love
I found this in a local charity shop and recognised it as a 1001 book. De Botton takes us through the narrator's relationship with Chloe from a chance meeting on a plane to its end. Different stages in the relationship are analysed through relatable anecdotes. I really liked the premise and the writing style.

21. Nada
My father picked up this book at Wimpole because it was written by a Spaniard, turns out it is a 1001 book. Andrea arrives in Barcelona to stay with relatives, a green 18 year old. Life with her family is not easy, with the toxic relationship of her uncle Juan and his wife Gloria and the intensity of her other uncle, Roman. Andrea tries to find her own way, making friends with Ena and other well-to-do students. The writing style is good, you can tell that the writer was young when she wrote this, but not unskilled. Sadly, the relationships between men and women in Spain 70 years later still do not seem to have improved enough, with domestic violence being a seemingly unshakeable headliner. I will look out more of her work.

22. The Years
The life of a family seen through episodes over different years. It was interesting to see the characters age and also the change in attitudes in reaction to the events unfolding around them. Not my favourite Virginia Woolf, but still an interesting one.

23. Between the Acts
A play within a book, literature surrounded by literature, there is a lot going on here in a book that isn't that long. It is one of those books I'd like to read again and discuss with a group as there are a lot of references in it. I am not really sure how to describe it or the plot. I suppose it is one of those books you thoroughly enjoy reading, but once you put it down, you are not sure what its spell was.

24. Molloy
My first by the Irish writer, it is a whirlwind of a book. The style is unusual and, I imagine for the time, rather ground breaking. I would like to read more of his work to get a better feel though.

25. Adam Bede
An interesting read about a girl whose head is turned by a local gentlemen with tragic consequences. Parallels to Tess of the D'Urbervilles are clear, with Eliot focusing more on religion here. I thought the plot and general theme of the book was well-addressed, but was left cold by the religious references.

26. The Temple of my Familiar
Another great Alice Walker book, with a sweeping range of characters and locations. It is hard to talk about the plot, but I found the character-driven prose page turning.

27. Quartet in Autumn
A quick read, but don't discount the observations of an overlooked third age. Funny and sad, I am glad to have read it.

Unsettling is a good word- the humour I found in it was the observation of British life, as a Brit I found it very familiar. Though it was moving, especially with how the quarter were living.

28. Spring Torrents
I connected more with this as I got further into the novella. At first I had flashbacks to English GCSE and Romeo and Juliet, a play whose premise always annoyed my own particular brand of romanticism / cynicism. As the story moved on, I felt more forgiving of Dmitri's changing affections. I wouldn't say I liked this as much as Fathers and Sons, but I am glad to have read it nonetheless.

29. Indigo
Bought earlier in the year to bring up the number of 1001 books written by women. This a saga of a book, with the colourful characters and locations really brought to life by the author. With inspiration taken from Caliban, the book moves through the history of the central family and the seeds of its own downfall sown in the first interaction with the British and the Caribbean islanders. Other themes are discussed are racism, especially in how Kit sees himself and others, the life of women and the change from colonial times to independence. Highly recommended.

30. The Once and Future King
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, I had never heard of it before the list. I studied Celtic Civilisation in my first year and have always been fascinated by the Arthurian myths, so it is surprising that this one hadn't come across my radar before. The first book was very familiar - I could see scenes from Disney's Sword in the Stone in my mind's eye as I read, which was based on it (according to a quick online search). At first I thought it was going to be a typical Bildungsroman, as Wart grows up to become the famous King Arthur, but the books get progressively darker and more complex. I really enjoyed the interjection's of the modern world into the text and references to other Arthur writers.

31. Silence
I have quite mixed feelings on the book. As an atheist, but one brought up with Christian traditions, I have left aside a number of the more overtly religious books, but that does not mean I discount them out of hand (I recently read and enjoyed Ben Hur). The book intrigued me, I remember studying a little bit of this topic as an aside to the Portuguese voyages of discovery, but the narrative made connection more human. At the time Japan was a country closing itself off from the influences of the outside world and the Jesuit priests and their converts were heavily penalised for their foreign faith. Father Rodrigues goes to Japan to find out what really happened to Ferreira, his mentor and apostate. Rodrigues is on a journey, treacherous in the political climate and also eye-opening as he sees first-hand how Christianity has evolved in a new land. The torture of the priests and the converts is brutal and heinously creative, but it is also psychological as they are forced to renounce their god and trample on an image of Christ. For the priests they are given the choice of renouncement or the Christians they are with will be killed. In this situation, there is certainly room for introspection, a time for questioning faith, with the victims becoming ever more tired and isolated. The style is good, I found it page-turning and thought provoking. The characters were human, rather than stylised saints in waiting. It is also easy to judge episodes in history, but not always easy to remember they were different times. I oscillated between anger at people being tortured for their faith and also understanding the fear of another faith coming in and taking over an indigenous one.

32. Crome Yellow
His first book, yes, there were flashes of what I enjoyed in Brave New World, but not as much depth. Funny at times, had me in mind of Gulliver's Travels.

33. The Dead Father
Experimental, odd, I kept reading to see what else might come up.

34. Cheese
A short, but great 1001 book. A very average man gets himself caught up in a venture to sell cheese. You see the dreams, the schemes and the failures. Sad, funny and he is definitely recognisable.

I couldn't find it either - I did used to know a way of writing in the touchstone to get the right Book, but I can't remember how I did it.
I am really enjoying my 1001reads this year, while i haven't read all of the British / American Classics, I have now been nudged into the more unusual side of the list.

35. Sentimental Education
The coming of age of Frédéric, a young Frenchman. This is a tough one, I can't decide if I was blinkered by the memory of the brilliant Madame Bovary, but I found that I couldn't really get into this.

36. Shikasta
Rather out there for me, but I found Lessing's treatment of Apartheid and the modern world through science fiction rather interesting. The format of the book is also unusual - narratives, reports and observations. I feel it would be worth reading a second time.

37. Contempt
It is hard to say if I would recommend this, the writing style is great, but the subject material made me madder and madder as I read through the book. The central character destroys his relationship through his own petty jealousy, constantly asking his wife when she stopped loving him. I would like to read another of his books to see what he can do with a more palatable topic, but for me, this is another example of a "woe is me" man book.

38. Written on the Body
One of my favourite authors and this book is a departure in style from some of the others I have read. A book about feelings in relationships, with the main focus on love and the joy and pain it can bring. Rather than a fixed story, there are meandering threads which highlight emotions, I enjoyed this. I loved the fact that the narrator was ambiguous in gender, this kept me rethinking my reactions to what they did. It is a short book, but I deliberately put it down to savour it and give myself time to think about it.

39. Wise Children
Twin sisters receive an invitation to their father's birthday party, coincidentally it is their own birthday as well, and the sisters reminisce about their lives. And what a life they have led, following in their family's footsteps by treading the boards. The narrative shows episodes of their career as well as their changing relationships with their family, especially with their father who doesn't recognise them officially as his. The sisters have a cheeky, go-to attitude and this makes the reading of the book fun, especially when dealing with the more unusual incidents.

40. Burger's Daughter
Written under Apartheid, Rosa is the daughter of 2 Afrikaner communists fighting against the regime. Gordimer uses Rosa to discuss the life of a young woman born into a family of dissenters and how this affects her own fate. On a government list from birth, Rosa spends her childhood, and later adulthood, visiting her parents in prison, passing messages and also living under suspicion. Part two takes the action overseas to Europe, where those against Apartheid lived in exile, before moving back to South Africa. Gordimer shows us how hard it is to maintain personal relationships under such circumstances. What sets the book apart from others is mixture of writing styles and changing perspectives. I found this enriched the novel as I felt you got a deeper understanding of Rosa. Highly recommended.

41. The Expedition of Humphry Clinker
A travelogue written in a series of letters by different members of the party, this one grew on me. The writers showcase their characters in their letters, from hypochondria to romance and also the styles inform the reader of more. I hadn't taken on board the timing of the writing, so was really interested in the Union talk. I'd recommend this, it is one I think I would read again to get even more out of it.

42. Blonde
I think this might be the 1001 book of the year for me. This is life of Marilyn Monroe, partly based on source material, partly imagined, this was a book I savoured. Oates has an innovate style, with the writing almost become more breathless and rambling as Monroe reaches breaking point. Such sadness in the book, naivety and dreams. At times, it was uncomfortable, especially the rather twisted relationship between Monroe and her mother which informs all her relationships. Excellent book.

I am surprised to see it was removed after the first edition. I really rate it. I have also read Black Water, which again I thought was great. The story of a Kennedy and a dead young woman. If memory serves, it was also removed from the list.

44. Fall on your knees
I bought this as I wanted to read more female writers on the 1001 lists. This is a family saga, full of dark secrets and pain, but the writing is excellent. Tough to read at times, with incest and family politics casting a long shadow. I'd definitely read more by the writer.

45. The Charterhouse of Parma
I liked The Red and the Black, too. There is a lot of detail, but the plot isn't really hard driven. I am glad I got stuck in on the bus this morning as I am much more likely to keep on with it. Reading this back, it sounds like I don't like it, but that's not the case. I do feel I will need to do some googling of events mentioned in the book to get more out of it. The plot rambles, but I did enjoy the descriptive passages.

46. Henderson, the Rain King
I think this was a miss from Saul Bellow, of course that could be because I reading this so many years later and the depiction of Africa brings up allusions to 60s films. From reading online, this looks like it was deliberate, but I don't think the genre was successfully subverted.

47. Bitter Glass
Ireland is at a bloody stage in the war for independence and a family get caught up in the fighting. Cut off after the IRA blow up a railway bridge, their house is taken over by guerrilla soldiers. The plot follows the war becoming real for this family from Dublin. I have mixed feelings, the writing is lyrical, but it is a bit slow.

48. Tarzan of the Apes
You know this one, there have been so many films, cartoons and adaptations that it felt familiar reading it. Very much in the vein of King Solomon's Mines, the book is about the orphaned child of white, aristocratic parents who is adopted by an ape after their death. Lots of derring-do, but what I found hard was the depiction of Tarzan's innate superiority, his ability to teach himself to read is one example. Yes, I am a 21st Century reader, but the comparison of Tarzan both to apes and black people was uncomfortable and full of stereotypes.

49. The Autobiography of Alice B Toklas
Or is it the story of Stein and the famous people she knew? I did like this, it felt like I was reading about THE arty set of the time. Lots of anecdotes and name dropping, an interesting read.

50. Passion according to G.H.
A really unusual book, taking an existential look at a dead beastie. One of those books you need to read more than once.

51. Time's Arrow
A life backwards, each step back giving you insight into what the narrator had done. Interesting writing strategy and it is a rather quick read.

52. Cakes and Ale
A writer is drawn back into a former life, when he met a writer and his vivacious wife. I am on the fence about this book, I did enjoy the writing and the story, but I think that the work is so entrenched in the time it was written, it would be easy to overlook.

53. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
The search is on for a mole, the mole at the centre of operations who has caused so many deaths. A sad book in its portrayal of lonely spooks and their broken relationships, but great detail in working at the Circus and the high level of suspense.

54. Cocaine Nights
Not what I expected from the title, Ballard takes us to Spain and a coastal resort full of expats. The narrator's brother is awaiting trial for murder, very much out of character for those who knew him, but this sunny dream location hides a darker side. Recommended.

55. Dead Babies
Ugh, really did not like this. The black comedy of it was lost on me, rather I was more irritated by the characters and their inane conversations.

56. Erewhon
A utopian land where beautiful people live, but with different morals and ways of living. I liked the discussion about machines and their rising importance, what they would be like as they became more powerful. The idea of machines being able to evolve as the humans who have created them make them better. An interesting read.

57. A Lear of the Steppes
A take on King Lear, but with an even bleaker backdrop. Not a long read, but I think I preferred others by the writer.

58. The River Between
Traditional beliefs are under threat of those brought in by colonists in this book. A short 1001 book, but one I'd like to read again.

59. Blaming
I have been looking out for a book by Taylor since seeing her inclusion on the 1001 list, this one didn't disappoint. A very British book - with a relationship forged under difficult circumstances is kept up despite the main character not really wanting to. I am really glad to have read it and would like to read more, but it is hard to say why without spoiling the plot. I would say it was the development of the story that I enjoyed.

60. Vertigo
I do find myself drawn into the journeys described, this time in Italy, where it is the travelling that is so much more than arriving. Historical sections mixed up with the narrator's (Sebald himself?) own travels in Italy and his trials and tribulations.

61. Nights at the Circus
An over the top heroine - half bird half acrobat - and the man drawn into her web. Carter paints circus life in vivid detail and, while the story gets more complex, it never loses the entertainment factor. I will look out her other book on the 1001 list.

62. The House of Seven Gables
A man does another man out of land and has his descendants cursed. Very different in tone to The Scarlet Letter, but (from what I remember) similar in characters.

63. The Laws
It was an interesting premise, I found some parts more interesting than others. The narrator's voice was rather detached, which made it harder to empathise at times. I would be interested in reading more by the writer, but I am not sure that this book was my cup of tea.

64. Don't Move
A confession of a doctor's illicit relationship to his daughter while she is undergoing surgery. I would praise the style, it certainly keeps you thinking and reading, but the main character's actions made me angrier and angrier.

65. The Marble Faun
Another Hawthorne - and this is very different to the two I read before. The action involves Americans in Europe and the very different culture and morals of the characters. Meandered at times, I can see why it is read, but I am not sure I would keep it on the list.

66. Harriet Hume
Harriet and Arnold have an on-off affair with Arnold. She is able to see his innermost thoughts, his hesitations about being with her. Their paths cross many times, but will he ever be able to commit? Very different from The Return of the Soldier and you could be forgiven of thinking that that this is a soap opera-esque drama from my description, but there is more here. I can understand why it was removed from the 1001 list, but it shouldn't be disregarded.

67. Naked Lunch
Hmm, so I have read more of his work, but I have little time for the Beat Literature I have read as I find it sensationalised, male dominated and so heavily drug influenced that there is not much for me to take away. Sure, so maybe this is "satire", but for me it is another example of derogatory white male attitudes.

68. The Last World
I loved this, a book I probably never would have heard of without the 1001 list. Ransmayr takes the characters of Ovid's Metamorphosis and people from the Greek's life and creates a new fabulous tale. I begrudged work for making me put it down.

69. A Heart so White
Marias takes us to the middle of a family drama. With the marriage of the main character, his mind takes him back to the life of his father and the marriage he knows little about, the previous marriage to the narrator's aunt, who killed herself seemingly without explanation. On his honeymoon in Cuba, the narrator ruminates over the circumstances of his own marriage and also the possibility of his father having a Cuban wife before moving back to Spain. A hard book to review without spoilers, I would like to praise the style and the way Marias weaves a web around the reader, keeping them close, but ever aware there will be surprises.

70. The Passion of New Eve
Evelyn, a British male, is captured and turned into Eve, this is his and her story, highlighting the plight of women in this dystopian world. Recommended.

I am not sure how to explain this one, I did prefer it to The Passion According to G.H., it seemed more personal, though still very philosophical.

72. Excellent Women
Pym captures the ordinary and makes it funny without losing the satirical edge. I have really enjoyed getting to know her work.

73. The Mayor of Castorbridge
A drunk man gives away his wife and daughter away at a fair, an act he regrets when he sobers up, but by that time, they are long gone. Years later they reconnect, with mixed results. Such a strange premise, but intriguing to see the drama unfold.

74. The Absentee
Edgeworth shows the life of the Anglo-Irish ruling class, often misruling at a distance.

75. Fear of Flying
I have wanted to read this for a long time, this ground-breaking feminist book. I have mixed feelings, I can see how it caused furore at the time, but the distance of time has made it dated. Sad to say though that many of the issues in the book ate still not resolved.

76. The Notebooks of Malte Laurids Brigge
Little plot, but lovely lyrical work.

77. The Double
A Kafkaesque novel of a man who sees his double in a film and tries to track him down.
This is one of those books that plays on our fears and our own paranoia, I couldn't put it down.

2017 brought me up to the goal of 700 books read. This year, I will try to get to 750. It is getting harder as it is still not possible to get all books and there are a growing number that I have no interest in reading. My primary sources are still charity shops, but I think I will be relying on online stores to pick up the more unusual ones.

January

1. Portnoy's Complaint
Not my favourite by the author, it is hard to get enthused when you don't like the character.

2. The Old Devils
1980s Wales, a group of not very likeable characters don't like each other much. I am trying to decide if this is not my cup of tea because of the subject or because reading yet another book about old white men on the 1001 list is getting rather tired.

3. The Moon and the Bonfires
I really liked this, a quiet book with a lot going on under the surface. A short, but thought-provoking book.

4. The invention of curried sausage
I have wanted to read this for ages, especially as I have the film ready to go. I do enjoy a good Currywurst, so the premise of the book was intriguing. A man returns to his hometown to interview a former neighbour about how she invented the Currywurst. An aged Scheherazade drip feeds him the story while giving an account of her own life and experiences during WW2. Highly recommended.

5. As if I am not there
This is a book that will remain with me for a long time. Set in the Balkans, this is the women's story of the horror of camps during the Yugoslavian civil war. The horror of the book is actually in the telling of what we will do to survive and also how those in power can abuse it and yet justify their heinous actions. Read it.

6. After the Death of Don Juan
Bought after plugging in a number of female authors into the search engine, this was an interesting read. I read the Spanish book Don Juan Tenorio at university, so was interested to see how that author moved beyond the end of the famous work. It is a book I would like to read again as the book was written during the Spanish Civil War and the author used the past to comment on that present. I will look out more by the writer.

7. The Ravishing of Lol Stein
Stein goes through a traumatic incident as a young woman, one which never leaves her. She marries and leaves her hometown and seems to go though life fairly normally, but when her husband's work takes him back there, it rises back to the surface. I suppose I have high expectations of the author, I have thoroughly enjoyed her Indochina-set books, but this wasn't as gripping.

8. Operation Shylock
What a strange premise, the author is impersonated by a man with a divisive political agenda. You need to concentrate with this one, but it is worth reading.

9. Sister Carrie
This wasn't what I expected, I picked it up in a charity shop because I recognised the title from the 1001 list. Dreiser takes us back to Chicago over a century ago and how the working class lived. The central character is a naïve woman who quickly realises she does not want to drudge like her family and is taken up to be a mistress. A rather depressing read, especially in how the characters treat each other, but I found myself turning the pages fairly quickly.

10. Doctor Faustus
A study of genius and madness. You need to concentrate but worth the read.

11. Cannery Row: (Centennial Edition)
Steinbeck's well-crafted characters bring America in tough times to life.

12. Humboldt's Gift
Not my favourite Bellow by a long shot, I didn't identify with the characters and so ultimately it became more of a reading exercise than a good read.

13. New Grub Street
A look at writers trying to survive, with relationships with people and living for your art or making your art pay for your living. Entertaining, but sad.

14. If This Is a Man
Levi's account of his life in a Nazi concentration camp, the decisions made to survive and the horrific conditions. This is an excellent book.

15. Faceless Killers
The first Wallander book, an elderly couple are murdered on their farm and suspicion falls on immigrants, bringing out the worst in racial tension. Wallander is also falling apart in the wake of his divorce and the disappearance of his daughter. A solid start to a good series.

64. Foundation
I am not a sci-fi fan, but I saw this in a charity shop and wanted to give it a go. I found the book interesting, I have little patience for three-headed aliens, but the premise behind the book did draw me in. I doubt I'll read the others in the series, but it was interesting.

65. 10:04
I am unsure how I feel about the book, I enjoyed sections, but there was a lot about the main character that I didn't really care about.

66. A Girl is a half-formed thing
A stream of consciousness novel, one which is gripping, but also one that is hard to stomach at times.

67. The Third Man *can't decide if I have read this or is this so close to the film
Intrigue upon intrigue, this is a quick read, but I really can't remember if I have read it before!

68. The Diviners
I loved this, another book that takes you through the wringer, but one that struck a chord. I am an expat Scot, living in England, but many of the Highland names in the book are familiar to me as is the tone of the songs and stories woven around the plot. Morag's story was one that resonated - success from humble beginnings despite situations and other people trying to keep her down. It was both interesting and sad to see Morag finding her own voice and place in the world.

69. To the North
Initially quite a quiet book, one that seemed not to be deep, however much is simmering under the surface with two very different women brought together after the death of one's husband. I have enjoyed all of Bowen's books on the list, her eye for human interaction is very sharp.

70. Heartbreak Tango
I found 2 of Puig's books in a charity shop and decided to start with this one. It was a read that grabbed you, the mix of styles and the titular heartbreak unfolding was gripping.

In 2019 I would like to get to 850 - I'd love to finish 1001 books by my 40th birthday in 2021, so ideally I would read nearer 100.

1. Faces In The Water
An unrelenting book on mental illness and her stays in an institution. Tough going - especially in the barbaric practices she described.

2. Hunger
A stark account about the madness, pain and misery caused by abject poverty and hunger. A brutal but sadly prescient book in these difficult times.

3. Hell and 4. Under Fire *1001
Not sure how I feel about this one - I haven't really read anything like it before. A book within a book, voyeurism and paranoia. I did get a cheap kindle copy with a second of his books included - Under Fire is a gritty WW1 read, I preferred this one.

7. What Maisie Knew (Wordsworth Classics)
In some ways the concept behind the book was way ahead of its time, a young girl caught between warring divorcing parents. At times it is farcical, the lengths that people will go to lie and cheat each other in the name of love. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

1001 Category challenge - read a book next to one you read recently

51. The Last Temptation - next to The Tree of Man
I have just finished The Last Temptation, took me a couple of goes to get started, but read half of it today in air-conditioned cafes. It was next to Tree of Man, an Australian book set on a farm. I had to keep checking to see when it was actually set, as the older generation could have been from the 1800s, in complete contrast to their descendants. I can't imagine it caused as much controversy as The Last Temptation, following Jesus' last months until his crucifixion. Both books reminded me with every page that I was in 2019, but in different ways. In Tree of Man, it was because the world described is one that has pretty much gone and The Last Temptation because more books and films have been released that look at the human side of Jesus' life.

52. I read Monica which was next to The Glass Key. Two very different books, Monica is a short, Welsh book set around relationships and money, whereas The Glass Key is a Dashiell Hammett crime book. I connected more with Monica, there was a lot going on and the female characters were more than the femme fatales beloved by certain crime writers.

53. Anagrams
Interesting premise, the same characters mixed up for the different parts. I agree with another reviewer, I felt it lost something by having such a long final anagram. I did enjoy the writing.

54. Inside Mr Enderby - Ugh why is this on the list? Another "hilarious satire" by someone represented multiple times on the list. I think A Clockwork Orange is excellent, this is drivel.

55. Pale Fire
As ever with Nabokov, you are aware that he knows more than you do and is cleverer, and doesn't he just know it as well! I would have got more out of this if I had read it for a class, but by the end I was reading to finish. Would merit another read somewhere you can't be distracted.

58. Zorba the Greek
Having recently read The Last Temptation, I was keen to see how this compared, especially as I had vague memories of watching the film with my grandpa. A larger than life character, easy to get caught up in.

59. The First Circle
Group read - still processing this. It always takes a while to work out whom is who in a Russian novel, I kept returning to the list of characters at the beginning. This does not take away from the reading experience, rather I was curious to find out more about the characters.

62. J.G. Ballard – 5/ 7 with Super-Cannes read for this month's challenge.
Empire of the Sun is one of the first films I remember watching multiple times, I read the book for the first time when I was at school, possibly stealing it off my mother's shelves. His biographical books are very different from the others on the list, in which sex, death and drugs are intertwined. Crash was eye-opening and looked at the darker depths of humankind, it also slightly
inoculated me for the contents of other books. Super-Cannes was outlandish, but I did find it page-turning, it was strange to read it after my own visit to Nice and also after seeing Riviera.

I spotted a couple of books I had missed on the spreadsheet, so actually seem to be at 843. I need to sit down and go through the list with a fine toothcomb in case I have clicked "read" on the wrong ones. I seem to be 3 out between spreadsheets, but couldn't work it out when I tried to check.

I do have some of the books as well as the spreadsheet, so will sit down with a highlighter and work it all out! I know my numbers don't add up at times because of rereads, though have now started to separate out 1001 books that are in collections as their own Librarything entry.

I have spent time going through the spreadsheet and the first edition of the book, looks like I had credited some extra and missed some off. My current total now seems to be 847 over all the editions. The main issue seemed to be books with similar titles or authors with multiple books on the list.

I am going to see if I can get to 875 by the end of the year.

2020 goals - to complete by my 40th birthday, I need to read 5.25 books a month. To give myself a buffer, I am going to aim for 75 books this year, which works out as just over 6 a month. I have a few left on my shelves from 2019, so can get stuck in, but will keep using the challenges and readalongs here to keep me inspired.

1. The house on the borderland
A short read tagged as a horror, not my normal date, but passed the time on a bus journey from Glasgow to St. Andrews.
I also started Cecilia - a very long book!

I had a couple of bumper months, but I think the push has come because I can see the finishing line!

2. Half of man is woman - I found it hard to find sympathy for some of the characters, probably because no one came off well.

3. The book of disquiet - disjointed, but fascinating

4. Cecilia - funny at times, overlong as books of the time were, but there is a lot of wit to be found.

5. The Newton Letter - other end of the scale, short, leaving more questions than it answered, but I do enjoy books by the author.

6. Blindness - I had never read any of Green's work before starting this challenge, it is varied. I got sucked into this one.

7. Nip the Buds, Shoot the Kids - not what I expected, bleak but characters are well-drawn. Left me pondering for quite a while after.

8. Ignorance - up there with my favourites. Exile, survivor's guilt - there is a lot here in such a small book (with big type!).

I bought a couple of anthologies from Amazon for my kindle with a number of older books from the lists on them, like Ulysses, In a glass darkly and The Devil's Pool.

This bring me up to 902 read, this makes it feel really real. That I will actually complete this challenge!

35. W or The Memory of Childhood - short, dual perspective book. A lot packed into a few pages.

37. Thomas of Reading - short read, you need to get used to the spelling (V instead of U, the Gothic S that looks like an f). It is anecdotal, interesting to get a feel of life at the time.

38. H(a)ppy - experimental fiction, glad to have read it as it was completely different, not a long read.

39. Man's Fate - I grabbed this at the library because I recognised it from the list. I knew nothing about it and assumed it was another semi-autobiographical book, but actually this is set in China in 1929 and looks at the instability in the run up to the revolution. I really enjoyed this, the atmosphere was intense, at times the writing style was dated, but worth a read.

40. Miss Lonelyhearts - a short one, rather random, following a not very likeable main character. I can't say it will really stick with me.

41. Life of Insects - I enjoyed this, off the wall and I probably missed many of the political links, but it didn't matter.

April Challenge- a favourite author
42. The Thinking Reed
In terms of plot, this didn't grab me as much The Return of the Soldier or The birds fall down. However it was an enjoyable look at a woman's life, the writing is good and I found I was finished before I realised.

43. The Butcher Boy - a fairly quick read as this is a stream of words. Didn't grab me, but that may be more my mood than because of the writing.

44. The Counterfeiters - pay attention, this is out there, but I found it entertaining enough to keep going.

45. The Floating Opera
Not an author I had heard of before the list, but managed to find a 2-in-1 of his books. There's a good pace, some of it is rather humorous, I read it rather quickly. I'll probably read The End of the Road soon.

46 The Glass Bead Game
I overcame my school hatred of Hermann Hesse and actually enjoyed this a lot, especially once I had got past the dense introduction.

47. Antic Hay - some amusing parts in the writing, but this doesn't stand up to Brave New World.

48. Tirant lo blanc - a novel of chivalry from the 15th Century. Moves along faster than expected. It reminded me of when I did modules of Celtic Civilisation and we looked at the tales of Arthur.

49. Islands - South African saga based around the first Dutch settlements. It was a very interesting read, I had worried because the book was so long!

50. The End of the Road - bleaker than The Floating Opera, but a lot of the themes are common. A fairly quick read.

51. Auto da Fe - not sure how to describe this one, at times mundane, at times absurdly funny.

April Challenge - a favourite author
52. The Time of the Hero - a reread, I had read this years ago, but I recently read another of his books and fancied another. The lives of conscripts and the institutionalised bullying.

This brings me up to 936 on the list.

96. The Underdogs - interesting look at the Mexican Revolution

97. The Back room - this is a find, a new author to me and one I will look for more by. Often the female narrative is pushed back and here we see a woman's life as Spain moves from the 2nd Republic to the Civil War and into Franco's dictatorship.

98. Things and 99. A Man Asleep - a double header.
Interesting, two short novellas, my second foray into Perec's writing. I thought W, or the memory of childhood was excellent, so was keen to read more.

100. The Drowned and the Saved - Gosh, this is a book to read, ruminate and read some more. A series of essays, reflections on his previous work and also on his life. It is hard to write about without seeming trite, but Levi's reminder that what he experienced in Auschwitz was not the first or last genocide is what will sit with me, especially as parts of the world are conspicuously silent at the moment.

I have wanted to read this for ages and it didn't disappoint, his life and times - and his peeves.

102 - Against Nature
Possibly not the best book for our current times, but there were flashes that caught my attention.

103. The Way of All Flesh
A look at a family from the outside, interesting enough as a look at the hypocrisy of society.

104. Cause for Alarm
A very tense thriller written in the run up to WW2. I read this in a oner!

105. The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter
I had a lovely bilingual copy of this on my kindle with illustrations. I really liked it and will read it again.

106. Solitude
Another new author - life in a remote village in Catalonia, with an emphasis on the life of a woman.

October Challenge
107. A Sentimental Journey Through France and Italy
I had planned to read Tristam Shandy, but as I thought I'd stick a toe in the water and try a shorter book by the author. It was fine, but as I get on in the list, there are a growing number of books I don't want to read. I decided to read 1001 from the combined list, so that gives me the freedom to skip (maybe just for now) the books I don't really fancy. As things stand, I will be unlikely to read Tristam Shandy.

I wanted my last books to be ones I really wanted to read - so I decided to leave Ulysses and some of the older ones on the shelf. I also got a gift card from work, which I spent on books.
Of this last batch, the only one I really didn't connect with was The Sound of Waves, but I was really pleased with the others. Bartleby and Co is a good one to read later on in the list as it mentions so many other works in it.

So, actually I am half way through another 1001 book - Three trapped tigers, which I am enjoying. I am not going to make 1001 books my focus for a while, but I will keep a track of the other ones I read. I'll also keep lurking around this group to see how everyone else is doing.

My plan for 2021 is reading female authors, not quite worked out my plan, but it will be something new.
