Okay, since a bug got filed on this:
https://www.librarything.com/topic/247997
I thought I'd create a consolidated thread on all the recommendations that have come and gone without comment:
https://www.librarything.com/topic/69443
https://www.librarything.com/topic/124247
https://www.librarything.com/topic/49138
https://www.librarything.com/topic/77385
https://www.librarything.com/topic/99109
https://www.librarything.com/topic/50866
https://www.librarything.com/topic/307977
https://www.librarything.com/topic/313888
Most of these cover making the button more intuitive, either to actually do what it says, or to change the wording to say search for book, source, etc. In every case, the expected function is not what the button does.
So can we do something to fix this legacy code? (I'd even welcome its removal.)
Can it:
- Offer a listing of the applicable ISBN to chose to add to library
- Change wording to "Search for book to add"
* Subset - Make sure people know that LT is NOT a source of data, it has to be obtained externally
- allow the user to chose what item to search for when clicked -- Title, ISBN, Author, etc.
Any of these shiny Ponies would be good.

I'll once again salute this proposal...

Yeah, it wouldn't help me especially. But it would probably take out the biggest vexation to new users of the site.

Yup, I'd support doing something.
I'm slowly adding a load of RPG pdf and POD editions to my library. In many cases I have to manually add them as they do not come up in any search source (out of print, old edition, only available from publisher), and if the work already exists, combine the newly added work to the existing works.

>4 Maddz: Even if you use a source, it is very common to have to combine when there are only a few copies on LT.

>5 MarthaJeanne:
Or notice that actually are combined inappropriately. The Ars Magica 2nd edition ruleset is NOT the same as the 4th edition and the 4th is not the same as the 5th. I shudder to think what the Runequest entries are going to be like let alone D&D (which thank deity of choice I don't own).

This is often/usually due to a : in the title. Autocombining is based on title, author and ISBN. In the title every character has to be exactly the same for the first 20 characters or so OR until a colon is reached.
If titles are entered series name first : specific title : volume or edition number and no ISBN the poor computer will not be able to deal with it. I suspect that RPG works are among the hardest to keep straight. But luckily this isn't one of my interests. I'm more likely to be dealing with older works (no ISBN) with ridiculously long titles, but published in four volumes. However chances are good that there are only a few copies on LT.

Yes, a lot of RPG rulesets and supplements will have a colon in the title... But I have noticed multiple ISBNs in one I added yesterday:

I will have to consult on this one; I know we have (or had) a print edition around somewhere (which may be the original edition), and my PDF version is dated 2014...
I guess I will have to try my hand at separations! Luckily, I have a fair amount of time on my hands at the moment and between myself and him indoors we should be able to straighten out the ones I come across.

Bump. This issue has driving me crazy for years.

Honestly, since there's a talk of a revamp of the UI and that we've had another request (I've added to the first post), I'm going to bump this again.
17missjudgment
I'm not sure if this goes here but since my request was moved here, I'll comment. I like the new pop-up option on recommendations but could it actually allow us to do something? Ideally add the recommendation to the list of my already read books or dismiss it.
18conceptDawg
Yes. We are going to do a total rework of the Add Books procedure, including the buttons. We haven't quite gotten to that part in the LT2 project, but soon.
19gilroy
I'm aware this is under discussion for part of the rework, but I'm bumping since we've just had another suggestion in RSI to fix it.
20TheTolkienist
I am delighted to add my voice to the "at least rename the bloody buttons!" fraction as it drives me nuts to click on a perfectly and uniquely understandable text that then proceeds to NOT do what it says. If the devil and his/her helpers (see Good Omens) built motorways to generate negative energy, this button is the next best thing.
21conceptDawg
Believe me when I say that I am on your side here—and have been for years. I'm fighting the good fight but only so many things can be done at once when there are, effectively, two developers on LT.com.
23gilroy
Um, it was completely overhauled at least a year ago.
What problem are you finding? and Please BE SPECIFIC

>22 JerryMmm: This has actually been implemented to the extent that it ever will be. What is the issue? (Note: not all books will be found with express add, as I believe is it's official name)
