This will be my second year of rooting, I'm really pleased with how things turned out last year! Even though I reached my goal, I've decided to lower it this year because I kept avoiding those doorstoppers, thinking I would not have time to finish them. Also, I know I won't get anything sensible done in May when Assassin's Fate comes out so I've pre-emptied my calendar for that month. :D So, 15 books in 12 months is the goal. I'm also trying to challenge myself to participate more, I loved looking at what everyone was reading last year but rarely found the courage to jump into the discussions.

I've re-pooled my TBR collection, it currently has 45 titles of which a few aren't actually old enough to be counted as proper ROOTs but I've still got plenty of choice. It's the usual mix of English and Finnish, mostly physical volumes, mainly classics and fantasy (anthologies) with a couple of nonfiction books too.

(Had to remake my sticker in June because it stopped working.)

Going to tackle some sturdy roots this year...

Welcome back and good luck with your challenge! I love the idea of clearing the decks to read a highly anticipated book :)

Hi nerwende! I saw your request about Bleak House on avanders thread, so jumped over here to find you. I'll be interested in following along with you this year.

Best of luck with your ROOTs this year! I also like the idea of making room in your schedule for a new book. I do that, too, sometimes :).

>8 readingtangent: I do that every year. For this year I plan on reading 36 ROOTs, leaving room for the new and shiny ones I will no doubt acquire. Last year I read 77 book on total. 48 ROOTs and 29 new ones.

Welcome back and Happy 2017 ROOTing!

>1 nerwende: 15 ROOTs sounds great -- especially considering it's about a third of your TBR collection!!
And definitely jump into discussions.. no courage necessary .. we don't bite ;)

>8 readingtangent: and >10 connie53: yep, me too :) I read 76 books last year, only 30 of which were ROOTs (and I struggled to meet that ROOT goal at the end!). This year, my goals are 12 ROOTs and 24 books (I think I'll go past that, but having never had a kid before... thought I should wait-n-see ;))

Sounds like you've got great plans. Hope you enjoy lots of good reads on your way to your goal. Look forward to hearing what you have to say about your ROOTs and others, too.

I have Hard Times by Dickens in my ROOT pile, but don't know if I'm up to it this year. Seems to me neither Dickens nor his publisher worried about making the titles of his books "attractive." Marketing must not have figured highly in the 19th C. book world. Had to wait post-WWII world for that.

Thank you so much everyone for all the comments! It's been a bumpy start to the year, and even though I started Bleak House and still intend to finish it, I keep getting distracted. So I thought I _have_ to read something to get this year's rooting started for real, and picked possibly the lowest fence to cross with The Tales of Beedle the Bard, which is only about 100 pages! :D I've had it waiting since 2011 though, so definitely a ROOT! It was a lot more entertaining and amusing than I expected (I've read the HP books but am not a huge fan) so a morning well spent. :)

Congrats on the first ROOT, Nerwende. Did you read anything else since?

Well. The first half of 2017 did obviously not go according to plan. I'm still reading Bleak House, but I did manage to finish another ROOT, the Legends II anthology. Review posted.

Happens to us all - I signed up for 2016 ROOTs and didn't follow through at all. Big chunky books can be off-putting too - I had abandoned Bleak House but got through it this year with the help of audio. Good luck for the second half of 2017, hopefully there's plenty of time to meet your target!

Good luck with Bleak House! I may try it again sometime and use Serial Reader (an app) to make it more manageable.

Hi nerwende! I do hope you're at least enjoying Bleak House. Being leader of the group read forced me to set a rigorous schedule so that I'd finish it in a month. I'm glad I did, but certainly understand that it's taking a bit longer for other folks.

Good luck with ROOTs in the second half of the year.

Thank you for the encouraging words everyone! >23 karenmarie: I do enjoy Bleak House, it was just that life got in the way of reading for a bit there. It was easier to just read a short story or two from the anthology in one sitting whenever I had the time rather than to try to get back to the complexity of Dickens and then abandon it again. But I've picked it up again and I'm up to chapter 23 now, hoping to finish it over the summer. :)

Today, I finally finished Bleak House. I'll try to write down some thoughts and post them to the group read topic later but I just wanted to update now before I forget because this summer is turning out to be a lot busier than planned.

I just wanted to drop by again to say hi :)
I couldn't possibly catch up on the threads here (explanation on my own thread), though I wish I could!
I hear that you feel like you have a little more time again at some point after having a kid... here's to hoping ;)

& Congrats on finishing Bleak House! That's quite an accomplishment!
