"I hope I never read the last of (Evelyn) Waugh." -- John Bass
when I first heard John say this, (it was of course after Waughʻs death), I thought that it would be more of a compliment to say "I intend to read ALL of Waugh." Thinking it over,
I realized that "I hope I never read the last..." was a much greater compliment: he was wishing that there would ALWAYS be another Waugh forthcoming.

"met . . . in your function as librarian?" (374)
I think the outstanding of the authors I have met was Robert Lowell (1917-1977). I met him about 1955-56, during my time as a Boston University librarian, but I didn't meet him as a user of the library. He was very publicized and,
hearing that he was at B. U., I went to a sort of informal office hours with him. The most memorable thing he said was, concerning the Hungarian Revolution, "No one wants a war with Russia, but it makes you wish you could
DO something!"
I also met another poet, Gregory Corso (1930-2001) during those years -- in Greater Boston, but not in the library. Very affable and outgoing guy, but his listeners were
likely to disagree with him. One thing I agreed with him on: his saying that people should stop talking about "RIGHT & Wrong", and talk more about "GOOD and Wrong".
I met Thornton Wilder through the Harvard Classical Club, where he was a guest speaker in the early 1950s.
