There are so many threads, and I've had less time than usual to keep up with them this year--as I imagine has been the case for many of us!--so I thought a wrap-up thread where we could mention our favorites of the year might be in order...? Any recommendations?

I'll start by saying I read three four outstanding novels this year (full reviews written by all):

--Robot in the Garden (a sweet, wonderful drama about a man who finds a robot in his garden and then goes on a private quest, for lack of knowing what else to do with his life),
--Snow Child (a grown-up fairy tale about a pioneering couple who wish for a child),
--Alas, Babylon (a post-bomb tale that may be the most realistic and powerful post-apocalyptic novel I've come across, perhaps just short of the very different The Road),
and...
Anil's Ghost (a story of a woman searching for her identity in a war-torn country)

I'm not sure there's a nonfiction piece I'd so easily recommend, but I'll think on it.

What about everyone else???

I have not had a great reading year, but 4 that earned 5 stars were:

Fiction:
The Dispossessed by Ursula K. Le Guin - a little bit science fiction, a little bit philosophy, all kinds of wonderful
A Novel Bookstore by Laurence Cosse - I want to move in to this bookstore. I want this world to be real.
The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller - A fantastic retelling of the old story, as well as a beautiful love story
Knots and Crosses by Ian Rankin - I'm about to embark on an Inspector Rebus binge in 2017.

Nonfiction:
The Givenness of Things by Marilynne Robinson - her essays are as good as her fiction
A Spy Among Friends by Ben Macintyre - I want to be a spy when I grow up
