I found this article brought an interesting perspective on the significance of protests, a counter to a common rebuke of them as "fluffy" or ineffective. (The title has been changed since I first read it, and doesn't speak to the insight I found most interesting.) Not just the idea of "giving voice", but the experience of embodying one's ideals, of encountering those ideals as manifest in one's interactions with other people -- who are not just like you, in all respects, but share ideals and thereby make them real.

I'm considering it, but I don't have a grip on the logistics yet. I'm only a state away, but that's still an eight-hour round trip with probably a night at a hotel and maybe two -- so, doable if the January weather cooperates.

>8 southernbooklady: I know there are excuses being made, but this smacks of a restriction on the free right to assembly. If a protest is planned and permits are applied for, the government should do everything it can to accommodate.

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

10norabelle414
Dic 9, 2016, 8:59 am

>8 southernbooklady: That article is pretty exaggerated.

It has always been the policy of the National Park Service to allow the Presidential Inaugural Committee to select where it wants to hold inauguration-related events prior to issuing permits to any other organization. The "massive omnibus blocking permit" is something that the NPS files on behalf of the inaugural committee for every single inauguration.

According to an NPS spokesperson, “This is always the way it happens. What makes this so complicated is that not only is this inauguration, but because there has been so much interest on both sides of this election, we are seeing all of these extra events that want to take place at the same time.”

https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/none-of-the-inauguration-protests-have-thei...

>10 norabelle414: Thanks for clarifying. This is an unusual election, to say the least. People are going to be very sensitive to anything that looks like an abridgment by this administration of constitutional rights.

12norabelle414
Dic 9, 2016, 9:08 am

>11 sturlington: Absolutely. That's still a very real possibility, but it hasn't happened yet.

As a life-long Washingtonian I am acutely aware of what a shitshow the inauguration is, no matter the President.

13southernbooklady
Dic 9, 2016, 10:10 am

>10 norabelle414: “Since we don’t have the permits we are in a holding pattern — what can we do?” she said. “We don’t have a plan one way or the other.”

A well-organized protest would have a contingency plan. And yet, I can't help but think that the NPS and the powes that be is made up of people who like all of us are on facebook and twitter and saw all this coming. So is it really out of bounds to wish that they, too, would have developed some kind of contingency response plan for the demand they knew they would be facing, instead of relying on bureaucratic processes to be the official response given to thousands of citizens highly invested in what has and is happening in their government?

14norabelle414
Dic 9, 2016, 11:03 am

>13 southernbooklady: What would you suggest the NPS do instead? These are official policies that have been in place for decades, with good reason. I don't think there's anything outlandish about allowing the inauguration committee to have first choice of places on the National Mall where they would like to hold events, as long as that is the same rule for every inauguration. The inauguration is just a few days every four years, and the Mall is just one part of DC (and the country) and there are many other times when and many other places where people can protest.

The most time they would have to see this coming is 71 days (election day - inauguration day) which is no where near enough time to change federal regulations, especially with the holidays in between. And personally I think that changing federal regulations for a particular president, even if this specific change would work against him, is a very slippery slope.

15southernbooklady
Dic 9, 2016, 11:39 am

>14 norabelle414: I don't think there is any malice in the situation. Nor do I think there is anything "outlandish" in a permit process. I do think there are ways to anticipate situations and prepare for them -- including a simple acknowledgement that they are aware of their existence. (Which perhaps they have done? For all I know the NPS has already issued a statement to that effect in response to the many requests for space). And sure, there are lots of other times and places to stage protests, but the very nature of a protest, not to mention an inauguration, is heavily symbolic. So you can hardly begrudge people for wanting to make a statement at what they see as the most significant time in the most significant place. Perhaps accomodations for the inevitable protests should also be a given place in every inauguration?

I'd quibble with your "71 days" figure, though. The election has been highly controversial from the get go, and it was apparent from the moment each of the two candidates were chosen that things were going to be emotional and a little crazy. So, not 71 days. More like 5-6 months. Everyone saw this coming from a mile off.

If the Trump administration were at all savvy (which is extremely doubtful), they'd direct the NPS to approve the permits for the protest and let it go ahead at the Lincoln Memorial. No matter why the protest is not allowed, it will be interpreted in the worst possible way and will bring more attention to it. I'm already seeing this happen on Twitter.

How's "Don the Con: an insult to humanity"? All caps, in menstrual red.

If I could think of any way to get close enough to pie him, I'd happily go to prison.

These photos are amazing. I'm really happy to see people taking their constitutional right to peaceful protest. Almost all of my friends are there, and it brings tears to my eyes to see that while the electoral voting may not have gone my way, there are many, many people eager to stand up for our civil liberties.

I had planned to attend the NYC march today, but sadly the younger brother of my good friend passed away and I'm at the shiva instead. I just hope that all this marching sends a message, and I can be at the front lines of that.

The big tent of the Women's March:

At another march, a well-meaning attempt at this kind of intersectionality might have yielded a muddled message or a sharp-elbowed mass of nonprofits fighting for visibility and email addresses. But under the big tent of the Women’s March, it all made sense. Unlike single-issue movements that ignore the complex intersections of identities and injustices, the Women’s March leaned into the uncomfortable conversations that conscientious activism requires, leading to controversies over racial politics, abortion rights, and whether or not to honor Hillary Clinton.

My wife and I both ended up going (to the big DC one) - a friend volunteered at the last minute to watch our kid for the day. I thought I had seen crowds before. I had never seen anything even remotely like this. A friend who flew in from California to go said there were only seven men on the entire flight.
