Here's a place to discuss dystopian novels written before the end of the Cold War. Finally reading Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? I had only read Phillip Dick's short stories before, and this is very good! Why did I wait so long?

Sorry, I have missed this thread. Not sure I've read any oldies lately.

Huh, I checked my collection and while I have some from the Cold War period, I have't read them yet, although certainly A Handmaid's Tale would qualify, but it's one of my least favorite books of all time. I'm sure I have a a few post-apocalyptic novels that would fill the bill, but it would depend on how you define dystopian.

>3 auntmarge64: How would you define it? Maybe I'd loosely define it as a presentation of a society or world that is negative or undesirable in some way (oh dear, one could spend hours trying to define it...)

I am curious about your response to Handmaid's Tale, only because I have the opposite response to it. It definitely is a touchstone book for me. Different readers, different lives, different responses, eh? :-)
