I've only read the first of the Farseer trilogy, The assassin's apprentice, and I can't work our whether I liked it or hated it.
I was drawn in, certainly, but all those villages being 'forded' - the whole book seemed obsessed with violence and especially of a sexual nature. I'm no prude but I think it was overdone. Also, Fitz was a bit annoying and nothing much REALLY happened.
And yet my friend who recommended Hobb loves them.
Is it just me who's no so sure??

I've read the first trilogy and couldn't quit but I've never really liked them, there was something missing for me to actually like them. I have her next trilogy about the ships but I started them once or twice and can't get into them. I think there's just too much beat every one down to dust before anything happens for my taste. There is definitely a large group who loves them but I certainly don't.

Same here. They were very well written but I couldn't imagine reading anymore after the Assassin trilogy. She beats up her characters and makes everything SO bloody depressing.

I have to say that despite the depressing parts I loved the Farseer trilogy :) The next trilogy about him hasn't drawn me in so much, but I think that's more to do with my reading moods and what I feel like reading at certain times than the books themselves.

I got drawn in enough that I read Liveship Traders and Farseer in quick succession but I kept meaning to go back and read the last trilogy and just...never got around to it. I don't know if I ever will, now, because I've found so many other things to read that I'm much more interested in.

If you don't like these books, whatever you do, stay away from George R. R. Martin. Robin Hobb is light reading (not to mention short) compared to his Song of Ice and Fire series.

You know, I read the first Liveship Traders book on the advice of a friend. She gave me that and the Farseer Trilogy and I just can't find a reason to finish them up.

I'm not sure if it's the violence per se, it's just overwrought and overlong. I mean she went on for 100 pages having the family fight over the same damn thing over and over.

I actually like the Song of Ice & Fire, despite the violence and the length. But Robin Hobb's idiosyncracies don't seem worth putting up with.
