password = ROOTS

We're at the halfway mark for the year and so far, we are ahead of the target! Give yourselves a pat on the back!

Below is the current list of members that have identified a ROOT goal for 2016 and how many books they read by the end of June.
The percentage is calculated and a star awarded for those on target to reach their goals. More stars for farther toward their goal.

I have removed twelve members to a separate list because they have yet to read one ROOT. They may have forgotten that they set a goal, or real life may have gotten in the way, but until they start up, we will not let their numbers affect the group goal.

If there is © next to your name, I see a ticker on your thread that is not in the ticker thread. If you could copy the code to the Ticker thread it would be a huge help each month.
If anyone's number is incorrect, please let me know and I will make the necessary adjustments.

So go out there and dig those ROOTs.

So, now, Ladies and Gentlemen, BOOK LOVERS, BIBLIOPHILES, BOOK HOARDERS - get out there and read those BOOKS!
Don't be swept away by the warmer weather and sunny skies! Work on your tan and read a book at the same time! We still need to read those ROOTs!

The goal for July is 2,450 We can do this! Just 132 books! Let's quadruple it for the 4th!

We can't let the nice warm weather distract us from our goal.

w00t! We're doing so great, everyone. Thanks Cheli for being so prompt, as usual, to set us up for the new month!

Lug 1, 2016, 3:29 pm

I'm at the end of the list! Oh, wait; it's alphabetical. I'd probably be at the end even if my name began with an "A" but that's OK. There are SO many books and SO little time and books that are easier to read keep getting in the way! I feel confident that I can read 20 ROOTS this year, though, so I'm not giving up hope just yet. Congrats to all the overachievers. It's good that I'm so far behind or I'd be jealous.

Lug 1, 2016, 3:56 pm

Not enough chat? Oh my! I'll start out a little chitter-chatter by observing that I might be a little low this month since I'm going to be doing some doorstoppers – The Once and Future King for the Reading Through Time third-quarter time period and John Steinbeck : Novels and Stories, 1932-1937 (Library of America) for the RTT July theme of weather-related disasters (here, the Dust Bowl).

And I do want to finish up The Complete Claudine, having read the first two novels for RTT's "School Days School Days" theme in June (the first novel being Claudine at School).

They'll all qualify for ROOTs but may slow me down on some other ROOTing. But as doorstoppers they'll all qualify for the Big Fat Book challenge too.

5rabbitprincess
Lug 1, 2016, 5:52 pm

Thanks as always for setting up the thread, Chèli! Will try to pop in and chat throughout the month :)

6cyderry
Lug 1, 2016, 6:01 pm

>4 CurrerBell: I too am reading a doorstopper - Coolidge for my US President's Challenge - 1,007 pages. I started in April and am still working on it. It doesn't even qualify as a ROOT because I got it from the library - 8 times!

7brakketh
Lug 1, 2016, 6:07 pm

>4 CurrerBell: >6 cyderry: Some really interesting reads going on there.

I am planning on severely limiting my library borrowing for July to try and clear some more shelf space. This is especially important as these ROOTs are not even on shelves which must be most insulting for a book.

Thank you Cheli for keeping us all informed about how we are doing, much appreciated.

Lug 1, 2016, 6:39 pm

Yippee! The thread is up!

June was a so-so month for reading, but it was that way last year as well. I think the combination of work and outdoor duties make it hard to read much that month.

Here's hoping for a better reading July for me, despite an 8 day trip to Chicago. :)

9moonshineandrosefire
Modificato: Lug 1, 2016, 8:40 pm

I was lurking around on the thread for most of June - as was Mareena. It was her birthday on June 1st. We went to our local library book sale on June 7th and I somehow managed to acquire eight more books then she did - on her annual birthday trip to the library! :)

We've actually each bought books for ourselves that the other one wants to read as well! At least, that's my story and I'm sticking to it! LOL!!

So I've just finished reading my first ROOT for July. I'm just hopeful that I'll read several more ROOTs than I did in June.

A renewed commitment to clearing my shelves for the second half of the year meant I have done a bunch of re-reads and one discard for a total for 4 ROOTS pulled over the weekend. Both group tickers updated.

ROOTS cleared:
Green Mars as I am reading some KSR I have never read before I realised I am tired of his style and decided against re-reading this novel.
American Gods a favourite but quick read.
Anansi Boys as above.
Fly Away Peter not sure why I retained this novel as though it is great look at Australia post/during World War I it is not an enjoyable read.

Good luck all and continue ROOTing.

I just finished The Night Circus, bringing my to-read pile down to 3 books! Right now my goal is more about keeping my TBR at 5-books-or-less through the end of the year, since acquiring new books faster than I can read them has always been a bad habit of mine.

I've added my first ROOT for July (22nd for the year) to all tickers including the group ones.

>23 KLmesoftly: I am so impressed! I was thinking recently how I used to be pretty similar to that, I'd generally buy a book and read it at the time, so I'm not sure how I managed to get my TBR pile so out of control! I suspect it's from when I joined a postal book club (this was pre-amazon days!) and would get sent a book every month as well as buying extras.

Finished my sixth ROOT of July: The Game: A Thoughtful and Provocative Look at a Life in Hockey, by Ken Dryden. I am a hockey fan by osmosis (my other half follows the sport) and found this very interesting.

Personal and group tickers updated.

I'm back after a couple of months' absence and have one humble book for July to contribute. I promise to do better for the rest of the year, my original goal is still reachable I think.

Have updated all tickers.

OK, so I finally finished another ROOT and updated my personal ticker. Am I supposed to update a group ticker as well? Perhaps the one at the top of this string?

Actually, it requires a password to update the ticker, so I can't do it. Right?

Signed,
Confused yet happy to have finally finished another ROOT.

I finished 4 ROOTs for July for 31 out of a goal of 50. Not up to my usual amount but better than last month. Reading library books for the challenge, doing research for my blog, working overtime (96 hours so far this year) and getting in my steps for the Library Thingers Fitbit challenge are all cutting into my reading time but I have vacation starting at the end of August so will probably get in a bit more reading and get back on track and maybe even catch up on a few threads!

Just a few minutes ago I finished Marion Zimmer Bradley's Lady of Avalon, which gives me three for July and 46/75 overall. The other two (the first volume of Steinbeck in the Library of America and the four-in-one of T.H. White's The Once and Future King), though, were doorstoppers.

Hello everyone! So, I seem to have settled into a much better pace with my reading for the month of July - 1 more ROOT read since last July!

Anyway, in keeping with the group theme, here are my totals for July:

Ancient Oaks Pruned: stands for older books read from my TBR pile: 5
Young Saplings Pruned: stands for newer books read from my TBR pile: 3
Trees Replanted: stands for rereads from my TBR pile: 2
New Seeds Planted: stands for additions to my TBR pile: 5
Trees Transplanted: stands for books that were donated: 8

I'm always keeping my personal ticker updated, but I never touch the group one!
