I'm back again for 2016. I need to do some further ROOTing to get those unread books removed from the shelves. My goal is 36 books that have been there for half a year or more.
My TBR is now 535 books.

I'm Connie from the Netherlands. I am 63 years young. I'm married to Peet (65)
2 children: Jeroen (33) and Eveline (30)
Proud 'kind of' mother in law to Rianne (28). She and Jeroen are living in a nice house right near where we live.
Cyrille (33) is living with Eveline in a city not too far away. They are expecting their first child in June. So Yeah! I'm going to be a grandmother or oma (as we say in Dutch).

On top you can see our house as it is today. It's sunny and nice and warm (May 2)

I like the way vacations are spread over the school year now. 6 or 7 weeks school and 1 or 2 weeks off. That is a nice balance I think.

I finished another ROOT. Number 12 for the year
Anne Bishop - Zwarte veren. A 7 for me. It's not as strong as the first part in the series was. The first 75 pages have lots points were things from book 1 are explained of told again. That will work when enough time has passed between the two books, but for me it was a bit to much, reading them one after the other. But in the end the story gets interesting again. 7/10

For the May-challenge for my real-live bookclub we have to read a book that was chosen in the past for all the categories we have.
That could be an
FF = Foreign Fantasy - book in another language chosen to read (6 books a year)
Opperboek = Book chosen to read together (6 books a year)
Sidekick = Book that ended as runner up to the Opperboek (6 books a year)
Challenge boek = Any book read by an other member for a monthly challenge in the past.
The only thing is, it can't be a book read in any of those categories by another member in this year.

I hope my explanation makes sense ;-))

I choose a book that was an FF in 2009 and has been translated so I can read it.

This is the translation of Poison Study
Part 1 in the Study trilogy.

From LT
About to be executed for murder, Yelena is offered an extraordinary reprieve. She'll eat the best meals, have rooms in the palace -- and risk assassination by anyone trying to kill the Commander of Ixia.
And so Yelena chooses to become a food taster. But the chief of security, leaving nothing to chance, deliberately feeds her Butterfly's Dust -- and only by appearing for her daily antidote will she delay an agonizing death from the poison.

As Yelena tries to escape her new dilemma, disasters keep mounting. Rebels plot to seize Ixia and Yelena develops magical powers she can't control. Her life is threatened again and choices must be made. But this time the outcomes aren't so clear . . .

Het slechte pad by Robert Galbraith aka J.K. Rowling

This is the translation of Career of Evil

From BOL.com

When a mysterious package is delivered to Robin Ellacott, she is horrified to discover that it contains a woman's severed leg.

Her boss, private detective Cormoran Strike, is less surprised but no less alarmed. There are four people from his past who he thinks could be responsible - and Strike knows that any one of them is capable of sustained and unspeakable brutality.

With the police focusing on the one suspect Strike is increasingly sure is not the perpetrator, he and Robin take matters into their own hands, and delve into the dark and twisted worlds of the other three men. But as more horrendous acts occur, time is running out for the two of them...

Studie van magie by Maria V. Snyder

This is the translation of Magic Study

In spoiler font because of....spoilers!

You know your life is bad when you miss your days as a poison taster . . .

With her greatest enemy dead, and on her way to be reunited with the family she'd been stolen from long ago, Yelena should be pleased. But though she has gained her freedom, she can't help feeling isolated in Sitia. Her Ixian background has changed her in many ways -- and her newfound friends and relatives don't think it's for the better . . .

Despite the turmoil, she's eager to start her magic training -- especially as she's been given one year to harness her power or be put to death. But her plans take a radical turn when she becomes involved with a plot to reclaim Ixia's throne for a lost prince -- and gets entangled in powerful rivalries with her fellow magicians.

If that wasn't bad enough, it appears her brother would love to see her dead. Luckily, Yelena has some old friends to help her with all her new enemies . . .

This is the translation of Fire Study

From LT

You know why.....

When word that Yelena is a Soulfinder -- able to capture and release souls -- spreads like wildfire, people grow uneasy. Already Yelena's unusual abilities and past have set her apart. As the Council debates Yelena's fate, she receives a disturbing message: a plot is rising against her homeland, led by a murderous sorcerer she has defeated before ... Honor sets Yelena on a path that will test the limits of her skills, and the hope of reuniting with her beloved spurs her onward. Her journey is fraught with allies, enemies, lovers and would-be assassins, each of questionable loyalty. Yelena will have but one chance to prove herself -- and save the land she holds dear.

This is the translation of Moon called

From LT
Mercy Thompson's next-door neighbor is a werewolf. She's fixing a VW bus for a vampire. But then, Mercy Thompson isn't exactly normal herself. Mercy is a shapeshifter, and though she was raised by werewolves, she can never be one of them, especially after the pack ran her off for having a forbidden love affair. So she's turned her talent for fixing cars into a business and now runs a one-woman mechanic shop in the Tri-Cities area of Washington State. But Mercy's two worlds are colliding.

Finished Onder de maan by Patricia Briggs today and loved it. ****.
Did I tell you that I love kick-ass women! Mercy Thompson is a car mechanic with her own garage and she is a shapeshifter, her best friends are werewolves and vampires. She is loyal and fearless and has powers that are unknown to her yet.

So I had no choice then to start in book number 2 In het bloed

This is the translation of Blood Bound

Mechanic Mercy Thompson is woken at 3am by a vampire calling in a favour. He has to deliver a message to a fellow undead and needs a witness that won't be noticed and Mercy's shapeshifting abilities make her the perfect candidate. But the assignment turns into a bloodbath and Mercy attracts the attention of not just a powerful vampire, but the even more powerful demon possessing him. She can count on the supernatural community for protection and alpha werewolf Adam would like her to rely on him in other ways too but when it comes to being proactive, she's on her own.

And I bought two new ones to celebrate the month of May.

Zilveren zicht by Anne Bishop
Part 3 of the Others

The Others freed the cassandra sangue to protect the blood prophets from exploitation, not realizing their actions would have dire consequences. Now the fragile seers are in greater danger than ever before—both from their own weaknesses and from those who seek to control their divinations for wicked purposes. In desperate need of answers, Simon Wolfgard, a shape-shifter leader among the Others, has no choice but to enlist blood prophet Meg Corbyn’s help, regardless of the risks she faces by aiding him.

Meg is still deep in the throes of her addiction to the euphoria she feels when she cuts and speaks prophecy. She knows each slice of her blade tempts death. But Others and humans alike need answers, and her visions may be Simon’s only hope of ending the conflict.

For the shadows of war are deepening across the Atlantik, and the prejudice of a fanatic faction is threatening to bring the battle right to Meg and Simon’s doorstep…

and

De kroon van de Tearling by Erika Johansen

On her nineteenth birthday, Princess Kelsea Raleigh Glynn, raised in exile, sets out on a perilous journey back to the castle of her birth to ascend her rightful throne. Plain and serious, a girl who loves books and learning, Kelsea bears little resemblance to her mother, the vain and frivolous Queen Elyssa. But though she may be inexperienced and sheltered, Kelsea is not defenseless: Around her neck hangs the Tearling sapphire, a jewel of immense magical power; and accompanying her is the Queen's Guard, a cadre of brave knights led by the enigmatic and dedicated Lazarus. Kelsea will need them all to survive a cabal of enemies who will use every weapon--from crimson-caped assassins to the darkest blood magic--to prevent her from wearing the crown.

I know there was somebody here who recommended that series to me, so I ordered the first part.

Stralende meisjes by Lauren Beukes

This is the translation of The shining girls

From LT

A time-traveling serial killer is impossible to trace-- until one of his victims survives. In Depression-era Chicago, Harper Curtis finds a key to a house that opens on to other times. But it comes at a cost. He has to kill the shining girls: bright young women, burning with potential. He stalks them through their lives across different eras until, in 1989, one of his victims, Kirby Mazrachi, survives and starts hunting him back. Working with an ex-homicide reporter who is falling for her, Kirby has to unravel an impossible mystery

Although this book has the House that allows Harper to travel to other times it's more like a thriller with all the killing going on. But I'm liking it very much so far.

I finished Stralende meisjes by Lauren Beukes and I give it a 7.

I think it's a bit strange. There is a hole in the plot. Some things aren't explained and that is a bit disappointing for me. And you should be prepared to make leaps in time. Each chapter is in an other year. You jump back and forth the whole time.
It's exciting but sometimes very cruel. If you think Val Mcdermid is bad, you might reconsider reading it.

I'm now reading De niet verhoorde gebeden van Jacob de Zoet by David Mitchell

From LT
Summary: 1799, Dejima in Nagasaki Harbour. Jacob de Zoet, a devout and resourceful young clerk, has intentions to make a fortune in five years and return home to Holland to win the hand of his fiancée. He has a chance encounter with Orito Aibagawa, the disfigured daughter of a samurai doctor. she is a midwife to the city's powerful magistrate. The borders between propriety, profit, and pleasure blur until Jacob finds his vision clouded, one rash promise made and then fatefully broken - the consequences of which will extend beyond Jacob's worst imaginings.

>72 avanders: Thanks! I'm preparing for New and Shiny ones during the summer break.

Re the Mitchell book. page 63. The writing is nothing like the other books I've read by him. The style is, but the language is old Dutch. Appropriate, because the book starts in 1799 and that's what was spoken then. But that takes some getting used too.
Here on LT the book is named as the first of the Horologists trilogy.
The second one is Tijdmeters, the third one Doorgang.
David himself says that he spend a part of 2006 in The Netherlands, funny!!

And yes, basically.
Horology is the scientific study of time. Specifically, horology involves the measurement of time and the making of clocks. One drowsy summer's day in 1984, teenage runaway Holly Sykes encounters a strange woman who offers a small kindness in exchange for 'asylum'. Decades will pass before Holly understands exactly what sort of asylum the woman was seeking . . .

The Bone Clocks follows the twists and turns of Holly's life from a scarred adolescence in Gravesend to old age on Ireland's Atlantic coast as Europe's oil supply dries up - a life not so far out of the ordinary, yet punctuated by flashes of precognition, visits from people who emerge from thin air and brief lapses in the laws of reality. Finished Als het zaterdag wordt by Nicci French and gave it

It was a good read and I like to read about Frieda Klein and her adventures. You have to read these books in sequence and this was part 6. So I think there will a 'Sunday' book.

Now reading De geestverwantschap by David Mitchell

This is the translation of Ghostwritten

From LT

A gallery atendant at the Hermitage. A young jazz buff in Tokyo. A crooked British lawyer in Hong Kong. A disc jockey in Manhattan. A physicist in Ireland. An elderly woman running atendant at the Hermitage. A young jazz buff in Tokyo. A crooked British lawyer in H tea shack in rural China. A cult-controlled terrorist in Okinawa. A musician in London. A transmigrating spirit in Mongolia. What is the common thread of coincidence or destiny that connects the lives of these nine souls in nine far-flung countries, stretching across the globe from east to west? What pattern do their linked fates form through time and space?

Dromerspoel by Juliet Marillier

This is the translation of Dreamer's pool

From GR

In exchange for the help escaping her long and wrongful imprisonment, embittered magical healer Blackthorn has vowed to set aside her bid for vengeance against the man who destroyed all that she once held dear. Followed by a former prison mate, a silent hulk of a man named Grim, she travels north to Dalriada. There she'll lives on the fringe of a mysterious forest, duty bound for seven years to assist anyone who asks for her help.

Oran, crown prince of Dalriada, has waited anxiously for the arrival of his future bride, Lady Flidais. He knows her only from a portrait and sweetly poetic correspondence that have convinced him Flidais is his destined true love. But Oran discovers letters can lie. For although his intended exactly resembles her portrait, her brutality upon arrival proves she is nothing like the sensitive woman of the letters.

With the strategic marriage imminent, Oran sees no way out of his dilemma. Word has spread that Blackthorn possesses a remarkable gift for solving knotty problems, so the prince asks her for help. To save Oran from his treacherous nuptials, Blackthorn and Grim will need all their resources: courage, ingenuity, leaps of deduction, and more than a little magic.

And

DroomNummerNegen by David Mitchell

This is the translation of number9dream

From BOL

Eiji Miyake, 20, naïve and wholly loveable, encounters a frantic, exotic world when he comes to Tokyo from his small island home to find the father he has never met.
Pin-stripped drones, a lip-pierced hairdresser, midday drunks ... Not a single person is standing still ... a thousand faces per minute ... oven-hot ... ready to buckle under the weight of cloud at any moment.
Eiji is a dreamer, a Billy Liar for the Cyberpunk generation. His fantasies structure this frenetic kaleidoscopic narrative, conducting the reader on an exhilarating, disorientating tour of metropolis and mind. One minute Eiji is contending with arcade-game cybourgs, the next caught up in a Blue Velvet-type nightmare with real-life (perhaps) gangsters: "dragged into a turf war between wolves with rabies". So what was crazed and charming becomes dangerous and gripping.

Here's me and my granddaughter Fiene

And her birth card (front)

And back

The little poem on top says literally

It's too beautiful to be true
But it's true and that's the most beautiful
Fiene has moved house
From mama's belly, to daddy's arms

And I love your puzzles. My dad and I used to spend entire afternoons, each with a puzzle. He even made me a board to put the pieces. (this was many years ago) I have started buying puzzles again recently. I got a card table and chairs for my spare room so I'd have a place to do the puzzles. I need to get them out of their respective boxes.

Today was a really lovely day for some garden reading. And I finished De geestverwantschap by David Mitchell

Really a very good book! I loved the way David writes. He has such a lovely way to say things. You can almost see the things he is talking about. I loved the way the stories intertwine and kept a notebook near by to scribble names down. It's a kind of a puzzle and I was even more surprised when somebody from newer books appeared. (Luiza Rey from Tijdmeters )

Now I'm reading Als de dood by Peter James

Wow, almost a week without visiting my own thread. That's exceptional, but RL got in the way, as it sometimes does.

The book by Peter James was not as good as I hoped. I normally love his books, but this was just one big boring thing. Especially the chapter were Bryce (the bad guy) and Red (the victim) telling their part of the story. The other chapters where Roy Grace is the POV were much better and up to the standard I am used to when reading a Peter James book. ***

I've read a small book too.
Waarom ik soms op en neer spring by Naoki Higashida about autism. Naoki wrote this book when he was 13 years old and being autistic himself he can tell things nobody else could. interesting read, also ***

Now I'm reading De droomtuin by Rachel Hore

This is the translation of The Memory Garden

Lamorna Cove, in Cornwall's far west, has become home to Melanie Pentreath, who has retreated to the overgrown gardens of Merryn Hall following the death of her mother and the end of a relationship. It is in this idyllic setting that Melanie meets Patrick, and they soon find themselves becoming closer to one another.

A really enjoyable light-hearted read.

De droomtuin by Rachel Hore is finished. I loved it, ****
It's the perfect book for summerreading. A bit of romance, a bit of suspense and a search for things that happened in the past .

Now I'm reading Aan de rand van het meer by Kate Morton

This is the translation of The Lake House

From BOL

Alice Edevane, sixteen years old and a budding writer, is especially excited. Not only has she worked out the perfect twist for her novel, she's also fallen helplessly in love with someone she shouldn't. But by the time midnight strikes and fireworks light up the night skies, the Edevane family will have suffered a loss so great that they leave Loeanneth forever.

An abandoned house...Seventy years later, after a particularly troubling case, Sadie Sparrow is sent on an enforced break from her job with the Metropolitan Police. She retreats to her beloved grandfather's cottage in Cornwall but soon finds herself at a loose end. Until one day, Sadie stumbles upon an abandoned house surrounded by overgrown gardens and dense woods, and learns the story of a baby boy who disappeared without a trace. An unsolved mystery...Meanwhile, in the attic writing room of her elegant Hampstead home, the formidable Alice Edevane, now an old lady, leads a life as neatly plotted as the bestselling detective novels she writes. Until a young police detective starts asking questions about her family's past, seeking to resurrect the complex tangle of secrets Alice has spent her life trying to escape...
