Carolina Rose, by Rafael Riveria, gives a probing look into the lives of a young woman and her daughter living in poverty, abuse and a constant struggle to have a better life. Riveria opens with Wilma as a teenager living with a father who in a moonshiner. They live off the beaten path in conditions Wilma does not want others to see. She meets a young man in a bar one night and begins sneaking out to see him. She is easily mesmerized by simple things like hot showers and air-conditioning.
Becoming pregnant, she marries him but he has already re-enlisted in the military and leaves within a couple days of them marrying. Wilma raises baby Rose in the same shack she was raised in and the cycle continues.
Riveria is quite the storyteller pulling the reader into the lives of the characters. He sets the stage with well crafted descriptions of the settings allowing us a ‘bird’s-eye’ view. His development of characters is exceptional. We see a range of emotion from love and passion to hate and wretchedness.
Warning: There is a rape scene of a minor written in detail. It did show the depravity of the character, but not everyone can stomach reading such. His recounting of sexual activity is somewhat crass, perhaps to align with the ignorant, backwood characters.
This book is not an easy book to read but once began it is difficult to put down. A great portion of the story is heartache. I was glad I stayed with it.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
