I found this two-sided bookshelf in a local (Switzerland) thrift store. They said it was used for hymnals in a church. I’ve never seen anything quite like it, and wonder if it was custom built or something sold to churches. It looks like a commercial product, although there’s no apparent maker’s mark. I have no idea how old it might be. If anyone knows anything about European hymnal stands, please share. I’d love to know more about its history.

I hope you bought it. Very cool.

Interesting that it seems to have holes for fitting locking bars, but they wouldn't actually stop anyone stealing the books (not that anyone in Switzerland would steal a hymnbook) unless the shelves were completely filled.

Without knowing anything about it I would guess early 20th century. The cross motif in the fretwork suggests that it was made specially for the ecclesiastical market.

I couldn't resist buying it. I went there looking just for books, but probably amused a few people when I lugged it onto the tram.

Great observation on the holes for locking bars--thanks! Never would have thought of that. A few lengths of brass rod will be a nice addition. They may come in handy. It looked like a revolving bookcase. It isn't, but the hardware will easily fit between the base and the bottom shelf.

The bars might have been there to keep the books in place during movement of the case or any rapid spinning.

Sorry I can't help with any information, but it's very beautiful and I hope you enjoy using it. I'm trying not to be jealous.
