The Hooded Hawke is the last book in a historical mystery series by Karen Harper with Elizabeth I as the sleuth. The action takes place during the queen's summer progress in 1569. It fits the historical espionage genre since it involves a possible assassination attempt and foreign spies. I'm counting it as my book About a female ruler.

Ru by Kim Thuy is an autobiographical novel about a Vietnamese refugee in Canada. It won the Governor General's Literary Award for French fiction in 2010, and I'm counting it as my Award winner.

For my book less than 10 years old, I listened to the audio of the latest of Louise Penny's Inspector Gamache mysteries, The Nature of the Beast. It makes me sad to say this, but it's the first book in this series I haven't much liked. The subject matter just didn't interest me.

The Upstairs Wife by Rafia Zakaria fills my Autobiography, memoir, or correspondence square. The author uses her family's history to illustrate the history of Pakistan. She particularly focuses on her father's sister, Amina, whose husband took a second wife after they remained childless for several years. Amina's life is used to examine the role of women in an Islamic society.

The Various Haunts of Men by Susan Hill is a book by a New to me author. I liked the book although it is flawed. The series protagonist is a minor character in the book. His sister shoulders most of the load but his name is used for the series! I liked the Detective Sergeant and I think I would have enjoyed a series with her as the main character. I didn't see enough of the series protagonist to decide whether or not he's likable.

The Richest Woman in America: Hetty Green in the Gilded Age by Janet Wallach is about a woman in a nontraditional role for her era. Hetty Robinson Green learned about the stock market and investing from her father and grandfather. When she had money of her own to control, she invested in railroads, real estate, and the like. She also loaned money to New York City on more than one occasion.

The Frozen Thames by Helen Humphreys is a short story collection of 40 vignettes, one for each year the Thames froze over. It's a lovely illustrated book. I borrowed it from the public library, but now I want to own a copy!

Time Remembered by Miss Read is a different genre than Celebrations at Thrush Green, which I listened to earlier this year. Time Remembered is autobiography/memoir, and Celebrations at Thrush Green is fiction.
