PROCEDURES FOR REPORTING SPAM

Distinguish between the following, and flag the highest level of the violation:

-- Type 1: Irredeemable commercial spam: make sure to flag the member's profile, as well as the spammy activity. This type includes things selling strollers, pharmaceuticals, live-streaming sports games, porn, and/or trying to create traffic/links to sites for such things. Sufficient profile flags will automatically result in temporary suspension and deletion of the member's activity, so use your profile-flagging powers wisely and carefully.

-- Type 2: Teachable moments: DO NOT flag the member's profile, but DO flag the violating activity (e.g. self-promotional Talk post, group, or local venue). This type includes promotional activity that violates the Terms of Service (TOS), but where the member is potentially redeemable, e.g. overzealous authors, overzealous publishers, or other members with small TOS violations but who are otherwise using the site legitimately. These cases should be reported to staff (by sending a message or email to staff and/or or posting on this thread), so the member can be taught how to use the site.

Specific procedures:
-- Overzealous authors or publishers (these fall under type 2): do NOT flag the member's profile. Report to staff here or privately. You can also send the member a polite message pointing them to the terms, mentioning the "no promoting" language, and pointing them to the Do's and Don't page for authors: http://www.librarything.com/about_authors.php
-- Suspected sock-puppetry to promote a book, write fake reviews, and/or stack ratings: do not flag the profile, but report to staff here or by message, so staff can investigate. This is a serious violation for which members can be permanently banned.
-- Profile flags for commercial spammers only (type 1): On the member's profile page, click on the "report for spam" link, then follow instructions to flag the member. Again, this is only for commercial spam, not for "overzealous" authors, publishers, or booksellers, which should be reported to staff instead. See Talk post: http://www.librarything.com/topic/85810
-- Spam or promotional posts in a Talk topic (type 1 or 2): flag the post as an abuse of the terms of service.
-- Spam or promotional groups (types 1 and 2): flag new groups using the "flag this group" link.
-- Spam lists: report in this thread, and flag the member if it's commercial spam.
-- Spam works (type 1 spam): flag the work as spam on the work's editions page, and then vote on proposed work spam. Make sure to read the guidelines before proposing or voting, especially for what is not spam. Voting page: http://www.librarything.com/spam_works.php
-- Spam in a review (type 1), or an explicitly promotional review (type 2): flag the review as an abuse of the TOS, using the red flag.
-- Spam or promotion in "published reviews," or other CK fields (type 1 or 2): post here and/or delete.
-- Spam or egregious promotion/advertising in venues or events (type 1 or 2): post here and/or delete. Note that authors are permitted to add events for their books.
-- Spam in book links / quick links: post here and/or edit to remove spam.
-- Spam author names listed on a work: No current procedure. Tim has asked us not to change CK to indicate spammers, and not to combine spam authors together.
-- Not sure if it's spam? Post here, and explain why.

Please note that Tim has asked us not to use either CK or the combining system (whether works or authors) for spam fighting.

Which staff member normally deals with spam stuff? This is a message for that person:

The "edit quick links" page needs to be cleared out of everything in the DELETE ME section, under Online Booksellers. https://www.librarything.com/editquicklinks/online:booksellers
These are quick links that have been added that were either duplicates, or spam, or links pointing to author pages or specific books, or other things that were not proper quick links. (When I spot those, I clear out any spammy or promotional URLs and mark them for deletion.) Jeremy used to clean this stuff out when he worked at LT, I believe, but I don't think it's had a clean in a while.

Has anyone official ever okayed the flagging of spam probes before the links go in? It's obvious that they are going to be spam, but given the dire warnings against "misuse" of spam flagging I've never dared to be pre-emptive in my flagging, since someone will undoubtedly protest that we don't know this one is going to turn into spam just because the last 499 did, this one might just be a poor clueless newbie, and then we're the horrible TOS-violating bad guys.

No idea. I searched for any discussions of it in this group, but couldn't find anything. It's possible that a spammer might also have added it and someone flagged the work because of that. It shows only one member, though if the flagger were "offed" that might have changed the number. But that's just a guess.

An ARC is an "Advance Reading Copy", a pre-release copy of a book sent to reviewers. They're one of the forms frequently used for Early Reviewers; usually they look like a trade paperback with extra promotional information on the cover, and frequently images and other such details are absent.

I'd point the poster at Hobnob With Authors and Member Giveaways.

191Marissa_Doyle
Set 23, 2015, 1:25 pm

An ARC is an "advance review copy"-- a pre-publication edition of a book that gets sent out to reviewers. It often hasn't been through its final proofreads yet, but is sent out anyway because most of the big review journals want to read books from 4-6 months before their release date in order to be able to have reviews in print to coincide with a book's release.

Maybe suggest she post in the Hobnob group?

Lots of spam appearing in the off topic group. Flags and staff intervention is probably needed again.

Yay! They are gone!

Oh god, I hope someone besides me is out there.

Huge spam on Book Talk (back in a minute with links)

Here's the (so far) single profile for all of it.

ETA: (I'd guess that someone on Staff noticed, and thank you. There just HAS to be something better than the way we're doing it now.)

I saw a bunch of threads but when I clicked on the first one to flag it — it was already gone! Maybe Tim has added some kind of super bug exterminator program.

>280 Taphophile13: I've been flagging them for five minutes. I made the frantic post here about five minutes ago (and then edited it, twice). I think it was manual intervention, but would be overjoyed to hear it was automated.

>281 Lyndatrue: I don't know about programming but maybe it's possible that all these posts are coming from a single IP address and that the system is set up to recognize an address that has already been suspended. There have been a lot of Asian casino ads today. Sort of like an immune response?

>282 Taphophile13: Nice idea, but the two things happened simultaneously (the spam links all dying, and account suspension). Most of the posts had been flagged only by me, or at most one other person, and then suddenly they were gone (and I blew a kiss towards the East Coast). I actually *do* know a lot about programming. Without knowing about the particular spam engine behind this, though, I think that it's all conjecture.

I'd suggest that a wise thing to do is to immediately suspend an account after {mumble} posts within the time period {mumble}, but that's still just going to slow them down. I don't know it *can* be automated, truthfully.

Now I'm just making myself sad.

Something just knocked out a whole bunch of them in the minute or so it took me to look at this thread.

I'm sure there will be more. There's never just one.

Lyndatrue
Is this some sort of automated spam or spam-bot thing? It's being uploaded so quickly.

304Jarandel
Ott 3, 2015, 1:15 am

>301 Taphophile13: Yes most likely a bot.

305Lyndatrue
Ott 3, 2015, 1:47 am

>301 Taphophile13: I'd say it was a bot, but the username creation is interesting (choice of names, I mean). There's the issue of creating a name that hasn't already been used, and yet looks vaguely user-like. The posts themselves seem to make almost no effort at being anything but what they are.

I just wish they'd put some kind of auth in for user creation until I get some sleep, because I'm about to head off for just that.

And the spam bot continues 25+ topic in Book Talk. Will flagging the profile end it? http://www.librarything.com/profile/fgwerwet

I'm going to do a continuation of this thread. It will take a few minutes (because I've never done it before, and I'm being careful).
