Hello,

Nowadays many publishers add round stickers to the dust jackets stating that the books have been signed by the author in a tipped-in page: "Signed Copy", "Signed First Edition", etc. What is the standard practice of a book collector regarding these stickers? Remove them or keep them?

Thanks,
Jose

I have no idea what a 'book collector' does. I buy books to read, not as an investment. The stickers bother me. I take them off.

I don't think there is a "standard practice" established. I tend to remove them since these tend to be added by bookstores or marketing departments and not part of the design of the book. I attach them to a sheet of paper and lay it in the back of the book. After all, it is part of the book's history.

First step after bringing home a book haul is de-stickering them (and de-gunking them if those stickers leave gunk). I hate it when the 'sticker' is printed on the (slip-)cover.

I have quite a collection, I would say I am quite focussed in my collecting too. But for me it is about the work, not the edition. If I can find a cheap, translated, broken paperback that is fine by me too.

Thanks for your reply benjclark! To my knowledge, in the case of books signed on a tipped-in page, the stickered jacket is as issued by the publisher. The sticker is not added by a bookstore.

jaguilarrod -- Yep! Some publishers do that, but some of the larger booksellers (here in the US at least), like Barnes & Noble, have stickers they'll slap onto signed copies.

I leave them unless damaged.
