What fascinating pictures . I have just been reading a book The Piano War . it's subtitle is A True story of love and survival in World War II by Graeme Friedman , tells the love story of Oda Mehr and Bennie Hermer . They were South Africans who were caught up in the War , separated , captured, escaped and re encountered one another in Cairo . Bennie was a doctor who enlisted in the SAfrican forces . Oda was a pianist who went to Europe to further her study and career . it is a remarkable story of the survival of the human spirit and the triumph of love . It is also a story of sadness and loss . Time Magazine at the time wrote up the story as "Love, Believe it or Not " The book was published in 2003 . I recommend this book for an insight into personal lives.

It is interesting to note that the population of the United States did not reach 140 million until 1945, which was exactly twice the total number of people killed during WWII.

A friend from Albuquerque just sent this fascinating link of photographs from WWII ... most of them taken just before, during, and immediately after the D-Day landings.

(Note: I found it easier to click on the images to travel back and forth in time.)

Subject: Pictures from 1944 to 2014 same photo will change into today from 1944
Let's not forget how it was....

Now this is an incredible use of technology---like traveling back in time!
Left click and hold on each photo, and then drag your mouse gently from
left to right on the original photograph and will be become a photo of the
exact same location and view today - drag it back to the left and you are back in 1944!

Scroll down for more of the same. Just fascinating!
