Simply Knitting Magazine Subscribers?

Just curious if there are any "Simply Knitting" subscribers here in the US or in the UK or Australia.

Is it worth the yearly cost?
Does it have a good mix of skill levels?
Are there other magazines you'd recommend?

I can't answer your question about Simply Knitting, because I am not familiar with it. I would recommend Creative Knitting. I subscribe to it and it has an interesting range of patterns for every level of knitter. Also, for adult clothing, they make a real effort to have patterns that are sized from very small to very large.

I still don't have any knit magazines yet and not sure which one I want.

I looked at the recent Simply Knitting issue and it has some basic mittens in the it and hat's too I think. It looks like to me a good basic magazine probably leaning toward beginner but I am not sure. the designs seemed to me to me more on the funky side.

Knit1 is way on the funky side for me so not one I would get unless I really liked a pattern. In fact I did one issue of it when there was a crochet pattern I really wanted to do.

Creative Knitting (sorry radiantarchangelus) I don't really care for how it's laid out. The designs haven't not grabbed me. Hey I am VERY picky so this is all me really.

So far of the mags I have liked the looks of is Knitscene. I bought a few of them on sale recently at my LYS and there are a few projects I want to do.

I like the classic and beautiful designs in Interweave Knits as well. Of the issues I've looked thought they seem to have a sock pattern in every issue and the makes it almost worth while for a subscription.

I have browsed through Simply Knitting and it doesn't do anything for me. I am over 50 and, trust me, you would not want to see me walking down the street in some of these designs! I prefer to make classic designs in very thin yarns.

That said, I think this would be a good choice for a beginning knitter with a younger fashion sensibility. They seem to include a good mix of easy patterns and articles on techniques. So far as I can tell, the techniques are reasonably accurate, and I even saw a few ideas I could use. The designs are generally based on use of bulkier yarns, and are small enough that they won't take forever to complete.

I would second the recommendation for Interweave Knits for more experienced knitters. I also like the Rowan books and ~some~ patterns in Vogue Knitting.

meerka - You might want to have a look at "knit simple," which is published by Vogue. (I thought that you were asking about that magazine, but apparently Simply Knitting is something different!) I do subscribe to knit simple.

As I understand it, knit simple used to be Family Circle Easy Knitting (FCEK), which was taken over by Vogue. The layout and general idea is pretty much the same, but there seem to be fewer beginner level patterns than there were as FCEK. The patterns look like about half for intermediate knitters (knitters with "some experience"), and the rest mostly divided between easy and experienced. I think the patterns are more accessible than many of the more complicated patterns that are in VogueKnitting. Vogue, being a fashion magazine, also tends to publish knitting styles that are more fashionable than classic.

Imo, Interweave Knits is the best of them, but many of their patterns, as oregonobsessionz says, are for more experienced knitters. I agree with sammimaug that Interweave's designs are beautiful and classic, though.

I wondered what had happened to Family Circle Easy Knitting! I haven't seen Knit Simple, yet. Oh good, an excuse to visit the bookstore/newstand!

I'm personally a big fan of Knitty, a knitting webzine. Each issue has a bunch of patterns, and a few articles. (Plus, the added bonus of free)

If you put a space before and after each link, they will appear as hyperlinks when you submit your message.

They sometimes behave oddly if you add the spaces after typing the link. Best to start a new line, type two spaces, then paste the hyperlink between them.

I went and bought Simply Knitting on the way home, cause I was curious. It is a $10 (U.S.) magazine, so OWW. It did come with a free tape measure, so I mentally justified it that way. :) I haven't finished looking through it yet, my only comment so far is that all the ads are English, of course, and that is not very helpful. I also got Knit Simple...knitting magazines are almost as deadly knitting stores.

You're right, radiantarchangelus - knitting magazines are dangerous. Not only do they accumulate all around the house so I can't find what I was looking for anyway, but they also result in more yarn purchases! I used to subscribe to Interweave Knits, Vogue, and FCEK all at the same time. Finally I came to my senses (or have I?) and dropped down to just subscribing to knitsimple/FCEK. I still buy others on the newsstand if I feel prosperous that day - they're definitely getting pricier!

I suppose I should really call around to the libraries in the county to see if any of them subscribe (periodicals don't get listed in our card catalog). My library should subscribe to one magazine since I run the knitting circle, but then we also have a meager selection of knitting books (though two hat books were purchased just for me!) which I will rectify soon!

I meant to post earlier about Simply Knitting, but this week has just gotten away from. :)

It is a very pretty magazine. It has some interesting patterns that appear to be very nicely written - I read through them, but I did not study them. At the end of the magazine it has a few sections that appear to be regulars. Yarn review, Book review and Web review. The yarn review for this month was bamboo and it was really informative. Book review was also informative, but as the mag is English - I wasn't sure if all the books would be available in the U.S. - though I assume they would be. Web review was all UK websites. Yes, you can reach them from here - or find their alternate U.S. sites (if there are any) if you want to. A great deal of the magazine is taken up with shop reviews, contest announcements and charity organization announcements. All UK based - so less than helpful for the U.S. reader. A note on patterns - some of the knitter's lingo is a bit different in the UK apparently, so beware. Also, all needle sizes are in mm - but gauge sizes are given in inches and centimeters - which threw me at first.

Overall, I would only buy this magazine if it had a pattern I really wanted. At $41 lbs. english (that's $55ish U.S.?) for a year's suscription it is REALLY expensive I think. Of course, if I was going to England I would also make sure to have a copy so I knew where to shop!

MaggieO, I had a few different knitting magazines going myself for a while. Creative Knitting, Knit1, Knit Simple....something else I'm forgetting I would tab every pattern I thought I might want to knit, so they ended up looking like little hedgehogs. I had to let them lapse while I tried to get a grip on my overall knitting habit!
