Deaths in November - 2014

Tom Magliozzi became famous with his brother Ray as NPR's Car Talk Guys. He died on November 3 from complications of Alzheimer's. His books include Car Talk, In Our Humble Opinion and A Haircut in Horsetown.

I did send in a question (car problem) to them one time, but never made it on air.

Former New York Times reporter Jonathan P. Hicks died November 3 at the age of 58. He wrote From Disaster to Diversity: What's Next for New York City's Economy.

Belgian/Irish poet Anne Cluysenaar aka Anne Jackson was found murdered on November 1. She was 78. Her work includes Touching Distances; Diary Poems, Timeslips: New and Selected Poems and Batu-Angas.

Historian Clement Alexander Price died November 5 at the age of 69. He wrote Many Voices, Many Opportunities and Freedom Not Far Distant.

Former U.S. Congressman Philip M. Crane died November 8 at the age of 84. He wrote Liberal Cliches and Conservative Solutions and The Sum of Good Government.

Did not like Crane. He wanted to privatize everything. No doubt a bad day for the Koch brothers.

Former NY Giants player and manager Alvin Dark died November 13 at the age of 92. He wrote When in Doubt Fire the Manager.

Model turned author Audrey Lady Wardington died November 8 at the age of 87. She wrote Superhints for Gardeners and Superhints for Cooks.

Mathematician Alexander Grothendieck died November 13 at the age of 86. A few of his books include Elements de geometrie algebrique and Topological Vector Spaces.

Former NY Times typesetter Carl Schlesinger died November 9 at the age of 88. He wrote The Biography of Ottmar Mergenthaler: Inventor of the Linotype.

The only woman to ever be mayor of Chicago, Jane Byrne died November 14 at the age of 81. She wrote My Chicago (Chicago Lives).

French photographer Lucien Clergue died November 15 at the age of 80. His books include Jean Cocteau and the Testament of Orpheus, Nude Workshop (A Studio Book) and Lucien Clergue: The Intimate Picasso.

Film critic Charles Champlin died November 16 at the age of 88. His books include George Lucas: The Creative Impulse and Woody Allen at Work.

Creator of the Choose Your Own Adventure series for children, R. A. Montgomery died November 11 at the age of 78. A few of his many books include Space and Beyond, Journey Under the Sea, The Abominable Snowman and Mystery of the Maya (Choose your own Adventure).

Insurance pioneer who founded Pre-Paid Legal Services, Harland C. Stonecipher died November 10 at the age of 76. He was the author of The Pre-Paid Legal Story.

Diabetes research Dr. Donald F. Steiner died November 11 at the age of 84. He wrote Insulin Biosynthesis.

Transgender activist Leslie Feinberg died November 15 at the age of 65. A few of Feinberg's books include Stone Butch Blues and Transgender Warriors.

Photographer Lewis Baltz died November 22 at the age of 69. His work can be seen in Rule Without Exception and Park City.

Prolific mystery/crime novelist P. D. James died November 27 at the age of 94. Her first book was Cover Her Face.

Prolific poet Mark Strand died November 29 at the age of 80. His collections include Blizzard of One.

English gangster Frankie Fraser died November 26 at the age of 90. His books include Mad Frank: Memoirs of a Life of Crime and Mad Frank's Britain.

Polar scientist Bernard Stonehouse died November 12 at the age of 88. His books include The Truth about Animal Communication and The Truth about Animal Intelligence.

Independent publisher for Coffee House Press, Allan Kornblum died November 30 at the age of 65. His own collection of poetry was called Awkward Song.

Crime fiction writer Janet LaPierre died on 27 November - her books include The Cruel Mother

Historian Bob Purdie died on 29 November - his book was Politics in the Streets: The Origins of the Civil Rights Movement in Northern Ireland

Novelist Kent Haruf died on 30 November at 71 - he wrote Plainsong, Eventide and Benediction

Artist "Wynn," Elwyn Chamberlain died November 27 at the age of 87. His books include Gates of Fire and Then Spoke the Thunder.
