Specifically about war brides, {either stay at home or working WWII or I women, fic or non}, romances in which husbands are away at either war, women travelers of WWI/WWII, war nurses, female aviators, and women travellers.

Yes, I read. Intrigued by the Mr. Keneally's setting, which I knew little about, and characterization of the two most important characters. Without giving clues to the close of the book, I will say that the style it was written in was stunningly creative. If you decide to read this story, which I highly recommend, don't page to the end of the book to find the ending before reading the story, or you'll miss the impact and also find yourself totally lost.

The novel: War Brides by Helen Bryant. Available on Amazon Books. Terrific read about women, brides or hopefuls, in England during WWII.

Check out The Care and Management of Lies by Jacqueline Winspear. The Maisie Dobbs series also deals with the War and it's aftermath.

War crimes for the home by Liz Jensen. Their finest hour and a half and Crooked Heart both take a less reverential view of these experiences. Land girls by Angela Huth looks at small group of women working on a farm.

I'm interested in reading Alan Furst based on recommendations in this thread. Here is my question; which book would be a good place to start? I see Dark Star is 2nd in a series, should I start with this series or another book of his maybe set earlier?

The Century Trilogy. Book one is all about the lead up and duration of WWI. More than one major story line follows women. Haven't read the last two books yet, but intend to soon.

My dear I wanted to tell you by Louisa Young, a romance in which the man has half of his face blown of in France. The young woman is working as a nurse in England. To add complications he is working class and she is not. I have the audiobook, but haven't listened beyond the first chapter so far. Have read a reasonable Guardian review, though. Apparently interesting for the stuff about reconstruction surgery.

Lucilla Andrews writes about nurses - with technical detail. She throws in romance, that is how they sold, but I find the details about nursing (and living) under difficult to be what interests me in these books.
Front Line 1940 takes place in London during the Blitz.
No Time For Romance the nurse deals with survivors from Dunkirk and the Blitz.
After A Famous Victory deals with the serious injuries to soldiers after a battle victory in 1943.
Hospital Summer nursing during the Blitz

The War That Saved My Life is an excellent YA book about how a child's life was changed by the evacuation of children from areas affected by bombing during WWII.

By Joyce Dennys. Fictional letters written about life in a small village in Great Britain during WWII. Delightful.
Henrietta's War news from the home front, 1939-1942

None of Us the Same by Jeffrey K. Walker. New talented author whose book swept me away to WWI with an Irish nurse who is quite strong-willed and a group of young men from Newfoundland, of all places. What happens to them will excite, upset, worry, touch, sadden and uplift you. The characters are fully fleshed out as if you know them and the scenes are beautifully descriptive. I loved it. It's the first in a trilogy.
