Hi,
I have a lot of our categories decided on but have trouble when it comes to the area of Christian Living. It is such a broad category that I have trouble narrowing it out. It kind of ends up as a catch- all!
Thanks

Use the Abridged Dewey Decimal Classification reference volume for help.

On the area of "Christian Living", I will use the classification in DDC Group 240 -
Christian moral & devotional theology.Use these in my home library.

241 - 249:
eg: 241 - Moral theology
242 - Devotional Literature
243 - Evangelistic writings for individuals and families
244 - N/A
245 - Texts of hymns
246 - Use of art in Christianity
247 - Church furnishings and related articles
248 -Christian experience,practice,life
249 - Christian observances in family life

For more details, in tagging for the descriptions of christian living, refer to the DDC volume 2 having more detailed schedules.

For example, you want to know more about Schedule 248 in detail, visit link:

www.dewey.info/class/248/about.en

or

www.dewey.info/class/(type xxx )/about.en (for other schedule 241-247,249)

We got this classification scheme from another church library on LT - holyfamily - with their permission and then modified it a bit. We think it flows well for browsing. The only problem is that we have to catalog each book, which actually isn't that hard if you use LT. We use Tags, favoring "Libraries that have your books", along with the Dewey and Library of Congress info under "Work Details", and Amazon reviews. That info, combined with the book itself, lets us catalog fairly painlessly.

Before settling on this classification system. we also looked at Dewey (often has wacky cataloging for our books), Library of Congress (didn't like the long numbers), and the John System, which was devised by the founder of the Lutheran Library Association years ago. You can read about the John system in "A Handbook for Church Librarians" that the National Church Library Association put out.

We have been pleased, also, that the tag SUBJECTS, when included in the various display styles (under SETTINGS) brings over, in green type, the Library of Congress Subject information which also can be searched.

I asked this of LT but never got an answer as far as I can tell:

Is there a way to make a specific collection private? We would like to exclude our music holdings from the general catalogue public view.

>6 TrinityLuthAthens: No. This has been discussed many times, but as books can be in more than one collection it would be very difficult to set up.

There was an attempt to allow individual books to be private, but that is so buggy that I would be very surprised if they ever tried the more complicated thing.

You could always open a second account for the things you don't want shown.

Thanks for the response. I do see, at the bottom of the edit book page, a box to click "make this book private. "

Don't even think of clicking on it.

With that kind of a comment, I wouldn't think of it! :-)

A Christian ought to live and enjoy a moral lifestyle, without fair! But it should be more like the song writer said: Let my life be light to some soul."
