Sweetbriar Begins the Climb

I usually write long introductions to my challenge posts. I think it helps me convince myself that I will stick with it, no matter how hectic life gets. This time, though, I will keep it short and sweet. When I start a challenge, I don't add in books I've already read. I only start fresh, meaning I only put up books that I have read after this post. A post for each section, filled in as I read. (I like to chat, so feel free to talk about anything.) Bold move starting from scratch. I think I dumped about 45 books into my challenge right off the bat, but I noted which they were and I think I'm down to just 25 of my 120 being read before starting the challenge. I don't think I would have had the guts to start tabla rasa.

Fundevogel...I expect this challenge to take me a long, long time lol But I'm so OCD that I just have to stick with starting from scratch! Do you have a time limit?

I'm hoping to finish before I die, but that's about it.

Welcome to the challenge, Sweetbriar! Much like you, I started tabula rasa and had to re-read about a hundred or so book to "catch up." It's been a marvelous exercise so far. I'm about 45% through the list, with the end slated for Summer 2017. If you need help, the wiki has some good suggestions. Cheers!

Welcome! I'm not even expecting ever to finish - some categories just plain don't have readable books in them, even though they're in use they're very, very narrow in scope. And I'm atheist and not interested in preachiness, so the dozens upon dozens of Christianity categories aren't ever likely to be finished. I'm trying to broaden my reading, and do as many as I can, but "finishing" isn't really a goal.

>29 lorax: Hah! I know what you mean. I looked at those Christianity categories for a long time and thought, "Compared to other religions, Christianity is just so mythologically boring." But, I thought since the history of Christianity certainly isn't boring, maybe I could fill that category up with historical stuff. (Maybe stretch the category a little bit). However, I LOVE how big the social science categories are. Archaeology/anthropology and literature are the loves of my life so....I'm excited! Good luck to you: if I find any good books in the Christianity section that aren't preachy, I'll give you a shout out.

Lol. Lorax is just over the the 200s. I'm an atheist as well, but I think I've done mostly good reading in the class. The only preachy ones I've read were foisted on me by religious family members. I'd like to think with all the books out there that one can conceivably finish the class with academic books without being forced into dubious spiritualism. No offence intented towards the religious, but I have no interest in people or books claiming great knowledge and expecting it to be taken on faith.

I'm agnostic myself, grew up in a Catholic family so...organized religion fascinates me, but doesn't logically fit with my view of death or morals, etc. I also live in the South so I see a lot of religion becoming completely (almost insanely) misused to create hatred, exile, oppression. Fundamentalism is always shitty. But, I mean can still be interesting to read about. I love to read about the Crusades and the Spanish Inquisition, for example. I mean....wtf, those people existed?!

That's more or less how I feel. The last book I read in the 200's was about an Italian nun duing the Renaissance that made a power grab by faking religious visions and such not and then used her peers' religious credulity and her dominant position to sexually exploit another nun in the name of god. There is definitely weird interesting history to be had.

It was Immodest Acts by Judith Brown. The author dug into the event aftter stumbling upon legal reference to the abbess' conviction of suspiciously vague crimes.
