We had a very pedestrian dinner tonight, I'm working late getting ready for school to start so hubby was in charge of cooking: fish sticks (my 2 and a half year old asked for them *shrug*), steamed carrot/ broccoli/ water chestnut vegetable mix and macaroni and cheese with milk to drink. Also a handful of jellybeans (again, toddler's request) and Butterfinger ice cream, to make sure we got all our dairy today! ;)

Elle, if your stomach troubles you - try bananas. When having ulcer or gastritis or just too much acids playing havoc this is way more affordable than eating medicine, and you don't need a prescription ;-)
Plus, they fill up the stomach so you don't have to go hungry.

They have to be ripe, though - too green and they're too much for the system to cope with...

#123 - When I had an ulcer (and then - chronic gastritis) I read about a report that had proved that 2-3 bananas a day equaled the use of Losec (ulcer med).
I found it to be true. BUT - there are stomach related problems that feels like ulcer/gastritis/too much acids but in reality is something else and then it only gets worse if you eat bananas. So try one first and judge for yourself...

125ellevee
Ago 8, 2007, 10:14 am

No, this definitely falls under the category of too much acids in my poor abused tummy. A man in a white coat claiming to be a doctor told me, so I know it MUST be true. Thanks for the advice - and it's nice to know that others share my tummy troubles.

127Busifer

Take care and be well soon!
Personally I found the way to manage was to allow some of the forbidden things - you can't get physically well if you don't feel well on a mental level... and one reaches a level of recovery where one can start to balance the goods and the evils ;-)
I have edited out oranges, grapefruits etc and allowed coffee. And a Zantac* as a precaution if I know I'm about to mistreat myself (ie. drinking alcohol or eating fatty foods).

*) I know that brand should be available in the US at supermarkets /no prescription/ etc. because I've bought it myself :-)
Zantac's also OK if you need to reset your tummy acids fast. I go nowhere without it (13 years with this problem has made me kind of tired of bananas, hehe!)

128ellevee
Ago 8, 2007, 10:28 am

Oh, I miss coffee. Two days without it, and I'm hurting.

After a few days, I'll slowly add in some unhealthy options. Right now I'm still terrified my heart will explode, or my stomach will implode.

129Busifer
Ago 8, 2007, 10:36 am

Take it real slow or you'll have a backlash.
I tried to ignore the signals and got REAL ill, losing circa 17 pounds when not being able to eat, only drink water and nibble on white bread. And I have never had any excess weight to begin with.
It's not worth it, the body starts to degenerate if you can't eat and then it's all downhill...

Well, my latest meal was pancakes at one of those diners that serves breakfast anytime, even for diiner.

HOWEVER!!!

LAST NIGHT I was in Coney Island and had pizza from Totonno's, a vintage 1926 pizzeria that is easily one of the 5 greatest pizzerias in the world, then to Nathan's for their classic Hot Dog with mustard and sauerkraut, fried clams (they were quite airy) and a corn dog (meat on a stick, yummmm).

I also saw the B-52's perform a free concert (they rocked like a lobster), then went to quite a fascinating Sideshow that featured the weirdest night of entertinment ever. Burlesque dancers and a 6'5" tall guy in a skintight blue bunny suit, all performing with Hula Hoops. You hadda be there!

*sigh* Well, I HAD been doing so well with my diet, too! Back to square one tomorrow!!!

re 167

Artic-Stranger,

Here I thought you were the strong, unsweetened, just black coffee type, but then came the Hersey Kisses. Then came the Mocha frappacino!

I started thinking of coffee and chocolate, topped with whipped cream, cinnimon sugar, and a Hersey Kiss. Well, if whipped cream won't support that, I suppose mini chocolate chips would do.

I went from that to a crust of graham crackers, nuts, and butter with a mocha pie topped with whipped cream, cinammon sugar, and mini chocolate chips.

Your coffee fixation I find quite inspiring for desserts! I don't think, however, I can indulge the desserts quite as often as you do the coffee!

I made too much clam chowder this weekend.

Here's the recipe:

Simmer 4-5 large minced potatos and three large yellow onions, minced, in about a pound and a half of butter until the potato starch begins to be pulled out into the butter (stirring frequently). Add more butter if it gets too starchy.

Slowly add two gallons of milk and one gallon of cream; add a big handful of coarsely ground pepper and a small handful of celery seed.

Add about 10 lbs. of potatos, cubed, and about another 3 lbs of onion, minced; keep at a low simmer for a couple of hours.

Let cool overnight in the frig.

The next day, add a medium bunch of celery, sliced, and more pepper and celery seed to taste; add 3 51 ounce cans of clams; simmer for about two hours and serve.

I'll be eating chowder for a while.

204Arctic-Stranger
Ago 13, 2007, 5:44 pm

Silly me, working on some fiction. This is the beginning of Chapter II

Be Kind.

Waking up is easily the hardest part of my day, and clearly the most unpleasant. Every morning I understand what my primeval ancestors felt when they experienced the shock of dry land for the first time. Once I get past the first few rebellions against consciousness, which takes a bit of time, there is little else in the day that can bother me—with the exception of finding dead people in my driveway. (I don’t take naps because I cannot abide the idea of having to wake up TWICE in one day.)

I have found the best way to get through the terrible unpleasantness of the first hour of the day is to have a rhythm so that I don’t have to think about anything until I am good and awake—which should ideally take up most of that first hour. That rhythm must move toward something pleasant—something very pleasant. That is why coffee was created.

The making of coffee is a ritual, not rivaled by anything any religious order has devised. Doing it half asleep just after waking is much like doing it in a religious fervor.

You start with the Drawing of the Water, and here most people make their first crucial misstep. The water must be cold, and fresh. (Fortunately Alaska tap water fits this bill perfectly.) The exact amount does not need to be perfect; a few drops, more or less, will not upset the delicate balance. Put this on the stove to boil while you are preparing for the next step—the Grinding of the Beans.
There are people who say that you don’t have to use whole beans for a decent cup of coffee, but these are the same people who don’t mind aluminum baseball bats, Barry Manilow, drive-thru communion stations, and paintings of dogs playing cards. The beans, (which are properly refrigerated but not frozen), are measured out in a scoop. Most people will prefer to use the same scoop. For me that is essential. Once my ex-wife lost my favorite scoop, which is probably one of the reasons she is an ex-wife.
Of course it takes more than just using whole beans to make a good cup of coffee. The type of beans you use is just as important. When I started drinking coffee, I drank it sweet and flavored—chocolate almond, orange, amaretto, raspberry, vanilla. It was more like hot liquid ice cream than coffee. Five years ago I gave up sugar for Lent, and during that time realized not only that I could drink coffee without any flavoring, but that I actually liked it better that way.
These days I prefer a Kenya AA or nice Mexican Organic. Occasionally I will try a varietal--Wake the Dead by Raven Brew, or Dog Musher's Blend by North Pole Roasters--but usually I settle for something African or Central American.
So with Two cups of water (which, after you have ground the beans should be boiling) and two scoops of beans, you are now ready to brew. Dump the ground coffee into your French press, breath deeply of fragrance, pour in the boiling water, and stir. Let it all sit for about two minutes (the hardest two minutes of my day), then cap it, press slowly, and pour.
You could use a coffee maker, and I do not judge people who do so. But if you want an excellent cup of coffee, and not merely a good one, if you want the crema on the top, as it should be, you have to use a French press.
Once I have my coffee, my newspaper, and NPR on the radio (or a few good jazz CDs if it is a weekend) then I am ready to face the day.

#247 The caffeine in coffee makes my heart palpitate, and keads to bad health in general. 21, and I'm falling apart.

#252 Just keep drinking coffee for me! Yeah, I've been drinking tea, but it's not the same, and I've been crankier than usual. Homicidal, even. Maybe everyone should just stay away from me for a while.

Just ate:
Fresh corn on the cob

I saw a nutritionist the other night, so trying to eat good food, but I've been in bed with a chest infection for 2 days (i wonder if i can blame the nutritionist for that???) so its hard not to just snack on choc biccies & stuff... @#204: Arctic-Stranger, that piece of fiction you wrote, was that for real? I loved it! :) Oh, and you can actually bake chocolate amaretto cheesecake!?!?! WOW! :P

@#222: Yeah, you can fry cheesecake, apparently, along with anything else your heart (ugh! poor heart) desires. A while ago I saw Paula Deen wrap a piece of cheesecake on a wonton wrapper, after putting a piece of chocolate tablet on top, and then proceed to deep-fry the whole thing, sprinkle powdered sugar on top, and then have the nerve to pour chocolate sauce and whipped cream on top, agh! I could actually feel my arteries clogging up just by looking at that monstrosity :( Not that I'm above junk food and all fried/sweet things, mind you, it's just that there's a limit, I think... *shudders*

By "fresh" do you mean not powdered, not concentrated, not altered or do you mean without homogenization and without pasteurization? If it is the later we call that "raw" and very few Americans like to drink raw milk because they are afraid of diseases.

#301, 306 - With "fresh" I mean homogenized, pasteurized milk. Which in plain text means it has been sanitized, the cream separated and then added as wanted.

I want my milk with some fat in it as the tastes are brought forth by that. Normally that means lowpasteurized 3% fat. For my coffee I use special barista milk made from highpasteurized 2.6% fat with extra milk proteins for high foam and better coffee taste.

At work they use this horrible UHT stuff. Yuk. But it's better than the powder "whitener" used in some other coffeemachines so given a choice between two evils I use the previous. I must be sick ;-)

I have only visited the US twice and never thought about how milk was used. But in lots of european countries milk is viewed as for kids only and adults. In Spain fresh milk is very hard to come by, at least where I have been, and costs astronomical sums because it is imported from places like the UK.
And when drinking milk in Germany I have been ridiculed by the personell at the pensions (small family run hotel) where I've stayed...

Busifer: I Googled "UHT" since I wasn't familiar. Ultra- High Temperature food packaging. Sterilized food in pre-sterilized containers. This is supposed to help preserve the flavor of the food. Guess they didn't ask milk lovers to do taste testing. Does this mean that the UHT milk can be kept unrefrigerated as long as it hasn't been opened?

Here in the US they have products that have been irradiated as a method for preserving foods. It always struck me as odd to have a milk carton on a shelf at room temperature, not in the refrigerator.

#321: Happy belated birthday, cad_lib!!
Does this mean that the UHT milk can be kept unrefrigerated as long as it hasn't been opened? Yup, there are several brands here in Panama, and I actually do prefer UHT milk (it tastes the same to me, Busifer :P), because, since I live alone, and I mostly use milk only for cereal, a whole carton of milk spoils VERY rapidly, even in my fridge (no one else around to drink it!). And UHT milk, even when opened, lasts longer in the refrigerator.

If you hate coffee, there a whole LT group focused on tea.

If you hate coffee and tea, then there's hot chocolate.

If you hate all three, there's hot cider, hot lemonaide, hot herbal drinks.

If you hate hot drinks, there's an abundance of cold and iced possibilities.

My process for making tea parallels Artic Stranger's for making coffee. I do my own blends both for taste and for reducing caffine since caffine doesn't like me much.

Oh. I Like bagels but they are currently out of fashion here in Stockholm and so are very hard to find. A couple of years ago they could be found at any place that sold bread. Not any more.

Latest meal was... let me think... marinated chicken/bulgur salad. Quite OK but I only had it because we are not allowed to eat hot (smelly) foods at out desks and I had bad conscience about not having achieved anything before lunch so don't felt like I could go out to eat...

I will make a note to look for Västerbotten soon. I may even find it in markets other than IKEA. The IKEA store is about 30-40 miles from my house by highway and it is a bother to go there.

#470 Busifer - ENJOY! Time alone is so precious when you have a spouse and children. 4 years? Heck, I'd take myself out to breakfast, lunch AND dinner after a drought like that. :)

#473 - I'm not entirely truthful in my post 470... I've had a day here and there, last time as late as some weeks ago when they went camping without me.
Me and my husband also have had some time without or son, when he has been with my parents.

I know I'm weird but what I really think I'm going to do with that time is read, spend it on-line without feeling guilty about it, and eat whatever I fancy at the moment (and WHENever, hehe).
And tonight I'm going to have a beer with some friends, if my cold allows.

The worst day I had for meals was a donut for breakfast, a chocolate muffin for lunch and a chocolate bar and some jellybeans for dinner. Or something like that - no meat, no vegetables, no fruit. That was naughty...

A Strange chocolate bar, but stretching the topic to what I had to eat last night - I had roasted/baked quince for the first time ever and it tasted gorgeous. I think that we're not preparing it quite right. We have lots of jam recipes for it and lots of recipes that say, if you can do it with apple you should try it with quince, but nothing quince specific and as we currently have a heavily laden overhanging tree...

It's nice to figure out the keyboard. As you may or may not know mine looks different from yours - I have åäö on it, and @\* etc are not in the same positions as on a non swedish keyboard. 512Busifer
Set 16, 2007, 12:17 pm

I think they do.

You know, in Spain you can have Cafe Americana. What you get then is watered down coffee, to the extent of being slightly brownish water plus a helping of milk...
Best avoided, in my opinion!

First time I had a decent caffe latte was in Germany, in the 80's. Nothing like it was available in Sweden back then. Best place was Café M, in Berlin. I went there every spring to have a milchcafé served in a soup-bowl!

513maggie1944
Modificato: Set 16, 2007, 12:42 pm

ah, memories, the first café au lait I drank was in the Peace Corps in Upper Volta (now Burkino Faso in west Africa). It had been a french colony so there was a thin overlay of french culture on the african indigenous cultures. I was only there for 6 months in 1967. But I have continued to drink "au lait" and occasionally attempt to read and understand a small amount of french. But like most north americans I am disgustingly monolingual.

For shame. I've been thinking of trying to pick up the french again or perhaps study a bit of spanish. We have quite a lot of spanish in our environment now, no matter how much we pretend not.

Set 16, 2007, 1:23 pm

Upper Volta. Sounds like there could be more memories and experiences than just café au lait?!

Had real good thai food this weekend - Geang Phed Gai, aka red curry w. chicken and lots of veggies - though.

Today I had Joje Kabab for lunch. In real life this meant chicken skewer & saffron rice. Tasted good.
I had just finished a presentation at a clients', just in time for lunch - their office is situated close to a big mall with this really good food court. I choose Persian out of a choice of mexican, greek, italian, "mediterranean", libanese, thai, swedish, indian, chinese... etc.

Truthfully, I have no freaking idea. It sure was good, though! I had 2 for $2.00!

I got them at a hispanic fast food truck parked on Fordham Rd. near the Major Deegan Expressway in Da Bronx, NYC. They sort of had a corn-dog look to the coating, but they were plumper and pinched at both ends sort of like a corn meal coated... nope, I won't go there!

Anyway, the deep-fried corn meal coated thingy also had rice and chopped meat inside, was VERY spicy, and was simply wonderful! YUMMMMMMMMMMMMMY!!!

On that cheerful note, we finally made it to a French cafe in MKE and the food was to-die-for. We started with their Mediterranean tray, which had the best hummus, baba ghanoush and olive tapenade I've ever tasted. The entree was perfectly prepared steak au poivre with pommes frites.

Last night for dinner: penne pasta with tomato sauce, mussels and black olives, topped with lots of Parmesan cheese. Also, a piece of bruschetta with fresh tomato and basil, and lots of country (? peasant?) bread with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Ahhhhh!!! I love Italian food. I can't wait to make my own pesto sauce and cook with the fresh, fragant herbs (basil, oregano, rosemary) I bought recently (I still need to transplant them) during a trip to the mountains...

This morning for breakfast: a sandwich made with whole wheat raisin bread and a slice of Emmental cheese + coffee(*).

>512 Busifer: @ Busifer
Well, usually, "café americano" means weak, watery coffee. Here in Panama we prefer our coffee dark and bold, so I always avoid anything that says "americano" yuck! :P In fact, when I visit the US, I avoid drinking coffee altogether, because it's almost always just brown water :(

(*)My coffee today was particulary dark... so I just had one mug, instead of my usual two, and in a smaller mug, too... heh

P.S.: Maggie > yes, the French use the accent above the e in "café", the same as in Spanish :) (I didn't know about Italian, I thought they used it too.)

#612, clamairy: Fried green tomatoes are surprisingly flavorful. An English grandfather loved them, so I wonder if they're a favorite over there? One year I made green tomato pie at recommendation of a friend whose mom made them--tastes a bit like apple pie, only tomato. Other uses are a kind of relish (chowchow?), but best of all is a green tomato mincemeat. A seasonal treat from forebears, who couldn't bear to waste a thing!

No kidding about the coffee. I love my cup of coffee!

Actually, in spite of the life style change I am feeling much healthier.

Hopefully, over the summer months I will learn how to make gluten free bread.
Many grocery stores carry gluten free products now which is a blessing.

and a hunk of Munster cheese- either that or Swiss to clean (until brushing) the teeth.

***712*** OHO!! We did it too! Black Angus Steakhouse coupon gave us starters: we chose "Steak Soup" (Vegetables and barley in tomato base with bits of steak); Steak, Ribs, Broiled shrimp, cole slaw AND watermelon for dessert! (Oh yes, we did eat the big molasses roll with sweet butter that is put out for while you wait!)

I'm currently having corn flakes in fat free milk. Yeah 11 in the morning and I'm just having breakfast. The coffee's brewing, so I'm not sure that qualifies as "last had", but it's on the menu.

My last meal was a 4-oz salmon, a tablespoon (pre-cooked) of rice and a half a cup of broccoli (because the green beans had gone bad.

This is all part of my don't-eat-so-damn-much diet.

Just scrolled back through this thread.

A bowl of Quaker Instant oatmeal, with the sugar and cinnamon sifted out. Those are way too sweet, and I was out of the plain oatmeal.

I quit caffeine about four weeks ago, and I do miss my morning coffee routine. Decaf doesn't really help.

Last thing eaten - 2 chocolate hobnobs to see me through to cooking pizza this evening as I had missed lunch. Salami Firenze pizza from M&S about to go in the oven as I forgot to get the vegetarian sausages out of the freezer in time to go with the roasted chilli vegetables I'd prepared earlier - so they will be tomorrow's dinner instead. As you can see even when I meal plan and prep I can't get it right at the moment!

>733 haydninvienna: Very nice.

I had a pleasant calamari surprise at the weekend. As you will be well aware, calamari can be beautiful (tender and succulent) or dreadful (rubbery) depending on whether or not it has been prepared properly. We found a bag of frozen calamari (yes, I did not think the odds were good) in Lidl. I decided to give it a try.

I followed the cooking instructions; two minutes in a deep-fat fryer, and they were gorgeous. Happy days. They will be on the shopping list in future.

My cullinary skills do not extend to preparing calamari from fresh, but I was once told by an old German man that the secret to tender calamari was to boil it when fresh and that it will be tender when you come to prepare it for eating. I cannot vouch for this, but that man was fond of his food and would not tolerate rubber-bands on his plate.

Calamari is my acid test for a sea-food restaurant. On my first visit I will order calamari. If it is not good I will not be back and will have taken the measure of that restaurant. If it is good I will have a lovely meal and will be back again. I will also recommend the place to others.

To get back on the topic of this thread, steak, with onions and mushrooms.

>736 pgmcc: I remember reading years ago that the way to boil calamari was the slice it raw, toss it into boiling water and count to 78. Then it would be tender, any longer and you’d have rubber.

Mine was marinated, incidentally. Partly to annoy Mrs H, who isn’t good with seafood other than prawns. Funny, now I think of it. She will eat prawns till the cows come home but rejects most other aquatic protein.

Giu 8, 2021, 5:18 pm

>737 haydninvienna: My German friend said the same but he was not specific with the counting to 78 seconds, but did say slice it raw and that boiling it too long turned it to rubber.

My wife has only recently decided she likes prawns. She joined me with the calamari at the weekend and liked it. Ours was in a batter. It was also very reasonably priced. There must have been about twenty-five pieces for less than €3. Not bad given they were good quality.

One of our village pubs has been doing food deliveries during the lockdown. We have always found their food good. The way they price the menu is, buy a main course and get a starter free. (Having spent the last three years acquiring knowledge on pricing strategies I can appreciate the tactic.) One of their starters is Tempura Prawns. These are exceptional. They are not the filo-pastry type you get as finger food at receptions. They are individually battered and when you bite into them the prawn is soft and delicious.

I guess once the cows get home she prefers beef? ;) I myself typically prefer seafood to beef. However, I think I've only eaten calamari once at some random restaurant and it didn't make much of an impression either way. Likely it wasn't cooked particularly well.

>736 pgmcc: Interesting that you have a test for seafood restaurants. I do too. Mine is clam chowder, New England style. It must be thick enough, creamy enough, and clammy-and-potatoey enough, but not slimy at all. Just a dash of fresh-ground pepper goes on top.

My grandmother used to make it in a big old pot hung over a fire on a beach in Maine, using clams her husband and sons had dug only minutes earlier. Can't get it fresher than that.

>740 Meredy: You've reminded me of a frequent summer scene from my childhood: my parents and aunt and uncle sitting on the beach, eating cherrystones my sister and I had just dug. My uncle had his special clam-opening knife that he always used, and my mother made the cocktail sauce (with extra horseradish.)

>737 haydninvienna: My Paul is the opposite. He'll eat fish provided it's filleted, but won't touch other forms of aquatic protein. I don't mind - any prawns come my way.

One of my worst experiences in Greece involved a plate of calamari - one was bad. Hasn't put me off though.

>737 haydninvienna: >738One of the great treats of Lourenço Marques back in the day was prawns: grilled, fried, peri-peri or straight. There is still at least one place on the beach and another in Catembe (south of the estuary, also on the beach) that can do the necessary. The trick has been passed on to several restaurants in South Africa, but at a vastly higher price and mostly without the beach.
