Deaths in May - 2014

Nobel winning economist Gary Becker died May 4 at the age of 83. A few of his books include The Economics of Life and Human Capital: A Theoretical and Empirical Analysis.

Farley Mowat, controversial environmentalist, died May 7 at the age of 92. His account of his time in the Arctic wilderness, Never Cry Wolf (1963), along with the movie based upon it (1983), is credited with changing public perception of wolves.

Novelist Leslie Thomas died May 6 at the age of 83. A few of his many books include The Virgin Soldiers and Dangerous Davies, Last Detective.

Legendary high priestess Morning Glory Zell died today, May 13, just two weeks short of her 66th birthday. As partner of forty years to Oberon Zell, founder of the Church of All Worlds (CAW) she made a significant contribution to the American Neopagan community.

Morning Glory co-authored several works with her husband including Creating Circles and Ceremonies, and contributed to a number of other publications. She and Oberon were the subjects of a recently-published oral history, The Wizard and the Witch.

Morning Glory is widely credited for the invention of the word "poly-amorous" which first appeared in an article she wrote entitled "A Bouquet of Lovers," published in the May 1990 issue of Green Egg Magazine.

Oscar-winning artist H. R. Giger, inductee into the SF Hall of Fame, died today, May 13, from injuries due to a fall. He was 74 years old.

He is probably best known for his groundbreaking and influential design for the creature in the movie Alien (1979). He shared his design process in the companion book Giger's Alien.

Journalist, critic and editor Arthur Gelb died May 20 at the age of 90. He was the author of City Room and O'Neill.

Romanian historian Radu Florescu died May 18 at the age of 88. He wrote In Search of Dracula, In Search of Frankenstein and Dracula Prince of Many Faces.

Civil rights author Vincent Harding died May 19 at the age of 82. His books include There is a River and Martin Luther King: The Inconvenient Hero.

The romance writer who thrilled my teenaged soul, Mary Stewart died May 9 at the age of 97. Some of the best known of her many novels include The Crystal Cave and The Hollow Hills.

Nobel winning neurobiologist Gerald M. Edelman died May 17 at the age of 84. A few of his books include Bright Air, Brilliant Fire, A Universe of Consciousness and Wider than the Sky.

Author Mark Daniel, nee Mark Fitzgeorge-Parker, died May 3 at the age of 59. He wrote Cranks and Gadflies.

Novelist Allan Folsom died May 16 at the age of 72. He wrote The Day After Tomorrow and Day of Confession.

Pin-up girl and photographer Bunny Yeager died May 25 at the age of 85. Her work can be seen in Betty Page Confidential and Bunny's Honeys.

Poet Maya Angelou died May 28 at the age of 86. Her best known works include I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, The Heart of a Woman and Wouldn't Take Nothing for My Journey Now.

Former publishing executive for Bantam, Oscar Dystel died May 28 at the age of 101. He wrote Mass-Market Publishing: More Observations, Speculations, and Provocations.

Writer and producer Sam Greenlee died May 19 at the age of 83. He wrote The Spook Who Sat by the Door and Baghdad Blues.

Lady Mary Soames, last surviving child of Winston Churchill, died May 31 at the age of 91. She wrote a number of biographies, primarily dealing with her family including A Daughter's Tale and one of her mother Clementine Churchill.

Hollywood reporter Marilyn Beck died May 31 at the age of 85. She wrote Only Make Believe and Marilyn Beck's Hollywood.

Educational theorist Maxine Greene died May 29 at the age of 96. Her works include Teacher as Stranger and Releasing the Imagination.

Paleopathologist George J. Armelagos died May 15 at the age of 77. He wrote St. Catherines Island.

Academic and retired civil servant Martin Dent died May 2 at the age of 88. He wrote The Crisis of Poverty and Debt in the Third World.

Poet Gerard Benson died May 2 at the age of 83. He was the author of Poems on the Underground.

Historian Gabriel Kolko died May 19 at the age of 81. His books include Triumph of Conservatism, Anatomy of a War and The Politics of War.

Australian philosopher David D. M. Armstrong, died May 13 at the age of 87. A few of his books include A Materialist Theory of the Mind and Sketch for a Systematic Metaphysics.
