I've found a good resource for genealogy mini-classes. This is through the Illinois State Genealogical Society. These classes aren't specific to Illinois. Most of them are general how-to's, although some of them more or less target the Midwest. The seminar is given live, I think usually on the second Tuesday of the month (there was one last night--sorry that I didn't get here sooner). The live seminar is free. All you need to do is sign up--they have room for 500 and they never have that many sign up. I'm a member of ISGS, so I can view these any time--they're saved in the "Members Section."
The one in March was titled "Going Nuclear: DNA Discoveries to Trace All Lines of Descent." January's was "7 Habits of Highly Frugal Genealogists." November 2013 was "Little Houses on the Prairie: Midwestern Research Techniques."
The 2014 series is sponsored by FamilySearch.
I'm currently listening to the one from February, "Printed Legends and Missing Footnotes: Dissecting 19th and 20th Century Compiled Genealogies." The presenter, D. Joshua Taylor, is excellent. One of his credentials is his connection to the Ancestry.com show, Who Do You Think You Are?. Based on the title, I wasn't sure how useful I would find it, but the information is excellent and has given me lots of ideas for working on some families in my tree.
For anyone with family who lived in the Midwest, especially Illinois, I recommend this group, the ISGS. They put out a good publication, the Illinois State Genealogical Society Quarterly. I think it's $30 a year or something. However, these webinars are completely free if you sign up and view them live.
The next one, May 13: "Organizing (or Reorginizing!) That Family Reunion." Then June 10 is "Plotting, Scheming, and Mapping Online."

Georgia Genealogical Society and Southern California Genealogy Society also have free ones. National Genealogical Society, Association of Professional Genealogists, and North Carolina Genealogical Society have also had some. Friends of NARA-Southeast has also had a few. Lots of them out there if know where to look. I kind of overdid it on them for awhile and got burnt out. I'm pretty selective in which ones I attend. A lot are lectures I've heard presented before at conferences so I can usually skip those.
