I am new to LibraryThing. I am an avid reader and collector of books and I had decided on my own to challenge myself to track how many books I could read in one year while I was reorganizing my bookshelves over the Christmas holidays. So, when I saw on one of my LibraryThing update newsletters about the 2014 book challenge, I was certainly intrigued. After reading a few threads and seeing what other people are posting, I thought it looked interesting. I will not be as creative as some of you are, but at this moment it is just about the challenge.

A bit about me: I am 33 years old and live in the (cold) wilds of Northern Ontario, so curling up by a warm fire with a book is one of my favorite things to do. I also like to travel, and I spend a lot of time outdoors camping, hiking, canoeing, kayaking and many other things.

Summary of books read for January:

Peeps- Scott Westerfeld- 312 pages- 4*
Zoo- James Patterson- 400 pages-2*
Parasite Rex- Carl Zimmer- 320 Pages- 4*
Neverwhere- Neil Gaiman-400 pages- 4 1/2*
How I Live Now- Meg Rosoff- 194 pages- 3 1/2*
Speaking from Among the Bones- Alan Bradley- 396 pages- 5*
Going Bovine- Libba Bray- 496 pages- 5*

So far this month I am off to a slow start as I ended up binge watching the Game of Thrones TV series, but I am currently reading The Book Thief and I`m enjoying it, more to come!

Welcome! Looks like a good start to the year. I recently finished a graphic novel adaptation of Neverwhere that I really liked - plus, it's been a favorite for a while.

So, a bit of a late entry for the month of February. I started the month with a flurry of reading, then got overwhelmed with other responsibilities.

Summary of books for February:

The Book Thief - Markus Zusak- 4 1/2*
The Walking Dead- volume 19- Robert Kirkman- 4 1/2*
A Monster Calls- Patrick Ness- 205 pages- 4 1/2*
The Night Circus- Erin Morgenstern- 512 pages- 4*

Definitely a slow month, going to have to pick it up a bit. All of the books that I read I really enjoyed though, so that was good:)

And now, the slowest month for me so far... I spent the whole month trying to get through:

American Gods- Neil Gaiman- 522 pages

Overall, I enjoyed this book, but I could definitely see it not being everyone's cup of tea. I briefly read through some of the discussion about it from last month, and I certainly saw that many people had a hard time getting through it. My difficulty getting through it had more to do with moving and trying to work about 40 hours of overtime at work in two weeks last month than that I was finding it difficult to read due to lack of interest.

Now, due to my slacking off this last two months, I am going to have to pick it up a bit...

A bit late, as usual, but for the month of April:

The Walking Dead- Volume 20-Robert Kirkman- 4 1/2*
Hater- David Moody- 288 pages-3 1/2*
Dog Blood- David Moody- 336- 3 1/2*
Them or Us- David Moody- 368- 3 1/2*
The Rosie Project- Graeme Simsion-304- 5*
The Bear- Claire Cameron-204- 3 1/2*

I was reading a fair amount this month, slowed down at the end, as I went on a vacation. I am finding that when I travel, I am not reading much, I am too busy exploring, which is different than when I was younger. I attribute this to requiring more sleep (or at least I perceive that I do;) ).

I need to pick this up a bit.

So happy to be finally getting some nice warm weather up here:) I spent one of my days off at the beginning of the month basking in the beautiful sunshine and reading nearly the entirety of the Kill Order:) I think this weekend setting up my hammock, downloading a bunch of new music and having another day like that is in order...

The Death Cure- James Dashner- 352 pages- 3 1/2*
The Kill Order- James Dashner- 368 pages- 4*

This was a better month but I still have to read a bit more per month if I am going to make it!

Still a bit behind. This time I have started to binge watch the Veronica Mars TV show. I am sure if you have ever watched it you will know why I just can't stop:)

This summer July felt like spring (rain, rain, rain) and we had a single week of beautiful weather during the month of July. Luckily for me this coincided with my 8 nights in Quetico Park (for American outdoors enthusiasts, this is the Northern Ontario Provincial Park just north for the Boundary Waters). The last night we were at the Park, the temperature plummeted to 1 degree celcius and now the weather feels like Fall. So much for a nice summer this year:( Our trip ended up including longer days of paddling than expected, so unfortunately I didn't get all the way through 1Q84, and while I am enjoying it, I have taken a break from it to read a series I had wanted to read years ago.

For the month of August:

Shades of Earth-Beth Revis- 384 pages- 4*
The City of Ember Deluxe Edition-Jeanne DuPrau- 320 pages- 4*
The People of Sparks- Jeanne DuPrau- 352 pages- 4*
The Prophet of Yonwood-Jeanne DuPrau- 304 pages- 4*
The Diamond of Darkhold-Jeanne DuPrau- 304 pages- 4*

So, I am still behind, and I am thinking that September isn't going to get me much ahead either... Maybe October will be better:)

So my plans to do a bit of catching up on my reading numbers in September were a bit derailed by having an extraordinarily busy September. I figured September would be a relaxing month because I have no children and I am not in school, but I was very wrong.

Anyway, for September:

The Winter Long- Seanan Mcguire- 368 pages- 5*
Possession- Elana Johnson- 432 pages- 2*
Surrender- Elana Johnson- 496 pages- 2 1/2*
Abandon- Elana Johnson- 464 pages- 2 1/2*

So I am still behind, but October is already going better:)

So I was rather excited about Halloween last night...I was planning on dressing up as the Wicked Witch of the West and had planned on painting all of my skin green (It would have looked so cool:) However, circumstances changed and I had to put in an extra shift at work...sucked, but 8 hours of overtime was cool. I had been hoping for a slow night to finish This Changes Everything, but it also wasn't to be, so I finished it today and I am including it in October's tally anyways:)

I am trying to bring it for the last few months of the year, cause I am woefully behind right now. This isn't really like me:( I think that the books that I have been reading this month really kept me engaged and not only were they great books, but I was in the right mood to read each of them too:)

For October:

The Rosie Effect- Graeme Simsion- 414 pages- 5*
Lock In- John Scalzi- 336 pages- 5*
Unlocked: An Oral History of Haden's Syndrome- John Scalzi- 96 pages- 5*
When Will You Rise- Mira Grant- 144 pages- 5*
Hyperbole and a Half: Unfortunate Situations, Flawed Coping Mechanisms, Mayhem, and Other Things That Happened-Allie Brosh- 384 pages- 4 1/2*
The Ocean at the End of the Lane: A Novel- Neil Gaiman- 181 pages- 4 1/2*
Wool- Hugh Howey- 528 pages- 5*
Speak- Laurie Halse Anderson- 224 pages- 4 1/2*
This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs. the Climate- Naomi Klein- 576 pages- 4 1/2*

I am going to have to sit down and plan out November now:)

I am pretty late in posting this:)

Well, November ended up being a busy month, so I was slow on the reading. I have been asked to teach a course at the local College next semester and lesson planning takes time. Oh well, it is a phenomenal opportunity:) I did really enjoy the books I read:

Shift- Hugh Howey- 608 pages- 5*
Dust- Hugh Howey- 464 pages- 5*
The Cat's Table- Michael Ondaatje- 288pages- 4 1/2*

There is no way I am going to make 75 this year:(

So, what course will you be teaching?

And Happy Holidays!

Thanks for the Holiday wishes:) They were quite nice this year, it is the first time since I started my career that I had Christmas Day off:)

I will be teaching Radiation Safety to the first year students in the first year of the Radiation Technology program.

Hope that your New Year has started out well:)

So, December was an odd month up here... After a cold November, December warmed up and we lost most of the snow that we had. I don't normally complain about the weather, but I was really looking forward to the ski hills opening :(

Blood Promise- Richelle Mead- 512 pages- 4*

So, not to shabby for my first try. I still read more than one book per week, which is not as many as I usually read per week, but oh well.

I really enjoyed this challenge and seeing all of the other books people are reading, my tbr pile is growing out of control;) I am looking forward to the 2015 challenge:)
