I bought Pere Goriot, thinking that I needed to expand my classics collection. The blurb on the back seemed interesting enough. I got in 20 pages and I was bored as hell. He spent so much time describing stuff that I had to just put it down for fear of ripping the pages out. What a waste...

French classic authors (Hugo and Zola for example) have a tendency to put a whole lot of description in their books but it is usually worth continuing on to discover the story. Push through some more and see if you can't make it a bit further. :)

I agree with Lilisin, since I've recently read novels by both Balzac and Zola. I read Pere Goroit, and I agree that the beginning descriptions nearly drove me away from the book, but after awhile I got into the flow of it; the characters remind me of later Agatha Christie mysteries...although this is not a whodunnit. Stay with it. I think it's worth it. I liked it so much, I've purchased two more of his novels, although all bets were off until I finished "...deathly hollows..."
