All the great things we know have come to us from neurotics. It is they and only they who have founded religions and created great works of art.

Proust has more great lines than anyone should be allowed.

In reading his quote on neurotics I worry that if he were alive today he would be too heavily medicated to produce his own great work of art.

You think his work is a kind of mania?

Actually, I don't. His control is total: I'm not sure that one can exhibit complete control in a manifestation of mania. I think what distinguishes Proust, what sets him apart and higher, is his discipline. Mania may contribute to the genesis of an idea or work of art, but discipline is what brings it to completion.
