Author, activist and former poet laureate of New Jersey Amiri Baraka died January 9 at the age of 79. I met him once years ago and heard him read. Nice guy.

Former Prime Minister of Israel Ariel Sharon died January 11 at the age of 88. He wrote Warrior: an Autobiography.

Simon Hoggart - political commentator, radio broadcaster and humorist - died on 5th January 2014. Playing to the Gallery and On the House are examples of his work that gave a humorous commentary on the British House of Commons.

Neal Barrett Jr. died January 12, 2014 aged 84. best known for his Science Fiction and Fantasy he was prolific writing both under his own name and under various house names. Well known for his shorts stories he also wrote many novels Including The Hereafter Gang, and various movie/comic novelisations.

Jack M. Tuell, a Methodist bishop, died January 10, 2014 at the age of 90. He wrote The Organization of the United Methodist Church, Episcopacy and an autobiography, From Law to Grace.

Robert A. Pastor, scholar and policymaker, died January 8, 2014 at the age of 66. He wrote many books including Limits to Friendship: The United States and Mexico and The North American Idea: A Vision of a Continental Future.

The economist Dale T. Mortensen died January 9, 2014 at the age of 74. He won the Nobel Prize in 2010. He wrote Wage dispersion : why are similar workers paid differently.

Larry Speakes died January 10, 2014 at the age of 74. He was the former press secretary to President Reagan. He wrote Speaking Out.

Serge P. Petroff died January 19 at age 91. He wrote Remembering a Forgotten War and several other works.

Cartoonist Morrie Turner, creator of the 'Wee Pals' syndicated comic strip, died January 25 at age 90. Among his many published works are All God's Chillun Got Soul and Explore Black History With Wee Pals.

Physicist John R. Huizenga died January 25 at age 92. He wrote Cold Fusion: The Scientific Fiasco of the Century.

Helga Sandburg died January 26 at age 95. She wrote many books, among them The Wheel of Earth and ...Where Love Begins.
