Has anybody read Close Range by Annie Proulx? I've read 8 out of the 11 stories in it so far and I have a question about one of the stories in it: "People in Hell Just Want a Drink of Water" -- SPOILERS AHEAD!!
When Ras is castrated -- who was supposed to have done it? The Dunmires, possibly, since Jaxon threatened to do so. But then at the end Mr. Tinsley asks why the overprotective Mrs. Tinsley didn't check Ras -- is that an accusation? However, it was Mrs. Tinsley's suggestion that Mr. Tinsley go clean off Ras, so what does that mean? Did she not know? Or did she want to get caught because she felt guilty, like she did when she killed her baby years ago?
