Being pensioners, we like listening to Capital Gold but they have begun to try a really annoying trick. They announce the news and then follow the announcement with an advert. Are they allowed to do that? I can see the advantage from the advertisers point of view but I find it irritating.

Write to them, threatening to move your allegiance as listener to another station. Start a petition! If they lose audience, they lose advertising revenue.

I think they have to ensure that the advert is readily distinguishable from the programme around it (so if it's after an announcement of the news, it can't be mistaken for the news) and it has to have appropriate in content (so no adverts for airlines adjacent to a new report of a plane crash).

Apart from that, I don't think "it's annoying" would be a valid cause for complaint. No mater how annoying it might be.

Sorry, Helen, if there is an announcement that the news is to follow and then we get an advert instead it does seem to fly in the face of any trades description. Maybe I'll tell them and see what happens.

Do Capital have adverts during the rest of the programming? I suspect that they've put adverts just before the news in an attempt to get the largest audience for the advert - everyone tunes in for the news, so you're going to get maximum captive listeners in the 30seconds just before the bulletin

And it may be simply down to interpretation of wording: "Here is the news:" followed by an advert is wrong, as the advert is not news. "The news is next:" is taken to be "the news is the next item of note", which doesnt necessarily mean that "the news will start immediately I stop talking"

Thanks, nordie, I'll check that next time it happens. I told them I didn't like it, anyway, but , of course , you are right. Yes, they do have adverts between programmes as well, but this is new.

I haven't listened to Capitol for a very long time, but it's a commercial station, and often things like the news and weather are sponsored by an advertiser - have you ever seen ITV weather bulletins, there's always an advert from the sponsor in between the announcement of the weather bulletin and the actual bulletin itself? Suspect ad on Capitol is the same thing.

We listen for the choice of music and I accept the commercial necessity of what they are doing but I have another gripe that I didn't tell them about - playing music behind the traffic reports. I do sound like an old grouch, don't I?

No, oldstick, I entirely agree with you, that's why I stopped listening to commercial stations some time ago. Since we retired my hubby and I have become R4 addicts...ahh, the prose poem that is the shipping forecast! :)
