Frederik Pohl 2 Sep 2013 born in 1919 best known as a science fiction writer and editor. Widely respected he received a number of awards in that feild. He wrote under a number of pseudonyms as well as his own name and collaborated often. Among his better known solo works are the Heechee Saga, Jem, and The Years of the City. As an editor he notably published Samuel R. Delany's Dhalgren, and The Female Man by Joanna Russ

Nobel prize winning economist Ronald H. Coase died September 2 at the age of 102. A few of his books include The Firm, the Market and the Law, How China Became Capitalist, Essays on Economics and Economists and British Broadcasting: A study in Monopoly.

Theologian and food critic (what a terrific combination), Robert Farrar Capon died September 5 at the age of 87. A few of his books include one of my favorites The Supper of the Lamb. Others are Kingdom, Grace, Judgment, The Parables of Grace and Capon on Cooking.

Journalist and historian Lansing Lamont died September 3 at the age of 82. His books include Day of Trinity, Campus Shock, Breakup and You Must Remember This: A Reporter's Odyssey from Camelot to Glastnost.

Philosopher Marshall Berman died September 11 at the age of 72. A few of his books include All that is Solid Melts into Air, Adventures in Marxism and The Politics of Authenticity.

Educator in the humanities, Sheldon Hackney died September 12 at the age of 79. A few of his books include Populism: The Critical Issues and Magnolias without Moonlight.

Literary Critic Marcel Reich-Ranicki died September 18 at the age of 93. A few of his many books include Mien Leben and Thomas Mann und die Seinen.

Proponent of Jewish mysticism Rabbi Philip Berg died on September 16. He was the author of Kabbalah for the Layman.

Advocate of pollution control Ruth Patrick died September 23 at the age of 105. Her books include Groundwater Contamination in the United States, Diatoms of the United States and Rivers of the United States.

Ghanaian poet and scholar Kofi Awoonor was killed in the Nairobi Mall Attack on September 21 at the age of 78.
He was in Nairobi for a literary festival.

NPR included a lovely excerpt from one of his poems, "Across a New Dawn," in their report:

According to NPR, a new collection of poems by Awoonor is scheduled to be published next year. It's called "Promise of Hope."

Beat muse Carolyn Cassady died September 20 at the age of 90. She was author of Off the Road: My Years with Cassady, Kerouac, and Ginsberg and Heart Beat: My Life with Jack and Neal.

Education researcher Jean Anyon died September 7 at the age of 72. Her books include Ghetto Schooling and Radical Possibilities.

Cookbook author Marcella Hazan died September 29 at the age of 89. A few of her books include The Essentials of Italian Cooking, The Classic Italian Cookbook, Marcella Cucina and Marcella's Italian Kitchen.

>12 varielle: Hadn't heard about David Hubel . . . his work with Torsten Wiesel on the visual cortex in cats was groundbreaking (and rather eye-opening, if you'll pardon the pun). I think of it everytime I play with my cat (or she sees something moving in the room before I do).

I HAD heard about Marcella Hazan . . . I still use her Classic Italian Cookbook on a regular basis . . . I learned how to make pesto and minestrone from that book . . . long before pesto was "fashionable" :)
