I have just purchased my copy of Birds and People by Mark Cocker. Has anyone else got it on their wish list? I must admit an interest as I contributed a small story to the book! Although I promise not to let the 'world fame' go to my head :-)

Hello Ruth! I'd love to hear what the book is like. I have the BirdLife / CEMEX book of the same name by Nigel Collar, Ade Long et al. It will be interesting to see what the new book adds - apart from your story!

I'd like to hear more too, Ruth. I'm away in France for the summer, but this is a strong candidate for the autumn list; Cocker is always good.

Edited to add a better touchstone: Birds and People

I was at the UK Birdfair yesterday and visited the stall manned by Birds and People author Mark Cocker and photographer David Tipling. I will shortly have a review copy and will post comments here. I got to see plenty of wonderful new books for the first time at the Birdfair, including PUP's superb The Warbler Guide by Stephenson & Whittle and Steve Howell's excellent Petrels, Albatrosses, and Storm-Petrels of North America. Too many books, too little cash!

I've been away, and only just picked up last week's TLS (4 October). It carries a review of this book by Jeremy Mynott. It's behind the paywall on the website, I'm afraid, but it's a very warm review:

'The publication of Birds and People is a major literary event as well as an ornithological one.'

is the concluding sentence.
