Hi,

I'm the one who recently listed Mary Macnab as primary author (editor) of the Best in Children's Books. Gladys Schwarcz has joint credit for the first bunch of volumes, though I might not have got around to adding her name for all of them. Her name disappears from the copyright listings some time after volume 28 and before volume 35 (sorry to be vague; there are some gaps in the ones that are available online), leaving Mary Macnab on her own for the rest of the series.

Someone asked for a source for this information. You can find it by digging around Google Books previews for the Library of Congress Catalog of Copyright Entries for the years in question, e.g.:

http://books.google.com/books?id=pyMhAQAAIAAJ&pg=PA87

or, more conveniently, at: www.copyrightencyclopedia.com

I don't know much about either of these women -- just that Gladys Schwarcz turns up as the editor of a few other projects for Nelson Doubleday, and Mary Macnab's name appears in the Best in Children's Books as the reteller of some of the classic stories (e.g., Robin Hood). Nor can I figure out whether or not they wrote the parts that have no author listed (e.g., "Let's Visit Austria"). So, although these credits solve one mystery about the series, they open up a few more. :-)

Adding a direct link to the page, as the search function on the site doesn't seem to work properly:

http://www.copyrightencyclopedia.com/best-in-childrens-books-vol-38-by-nelson-do...

They don't give a source for this information, but it matches with what I've found in the LC copyright catalog.

persimmonlibrary,

Very interesting! I will revisit this - maybe - and update my author field for the series, now that I have a name or two to use.
