I've noticed recently that my children love stories about mice. The Cricket in Times Square trilogy, Stuart Little, and The Mouse and the Motorcycle trilogy have been their favorite bedtime stories and audiobooks. I just bought a copy of The Tale of Despereaux, and was wondering if anyone could recommend other good books about mice.

Martin's Mice by Dick King=Smith.
Geronimo Stilton is a fun series.
I was a Rat by Philip Pullman - yes, a rat but a great author
Graham Oakley's Church Mice illustrated story books are great too
Time Stops for No Mouse by Michael Hoeye - really liked this but not sure of the age group
Brian Jaques' Redwall books - might be a little old for them
Young Fredle by Cynthia Voigt - can't remember if I finished this so just mentioning it

There's also The Amazing Maurice and His Educated Rodents by Terry Pratchett. One of my favorites.

Basil of Baker Street and sequels by Eve Titus was made into The Great Mouse Detective

The Rescuers, Miss Bianca, and several sequels like Bernard into Battle by Margery Sharp. The characters were used in Disney films based on the first title The Rescuers. (apparently you can't have two different versions of the same initial touchstone).

Ben and Me by Robert Lawson was also made into a Disney short with the same title.

You't get the idea that they liked mice for their films and yet none of these put Mickey in them.

Firmin is a mouse in a bookstore but long enough to be a chapter book.

Time and the Clock Mice is a time travel story by Peter Dickinson.

She Was Nice to Mice was written by a youthful Allie Sheedy and set in the time of Elizabeth I.

Mrs. Frisby and the rats of Nimh by Robert C. O'Brien was made into a non-Disney animated film called The Secret of Nimh. There are sequel books by Jane Leslie Conly like Rasco and the Rats of NIMH.

The Mouse and His Child by Russell Hoban teaches us all that we too can be "self-winding."

The Bookstore Mouse is another one set in a bookstore.

And those are just some examples I happen to find in our collections. Yes, there are many books with mice as protagonists in chapter book settings.

Seconding Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of Nimh -- loved that book as kid!

Also, Mice and Beans is cute, but it's a picture book so it might be a bit young for them.

Another one with a rat instead of a mouse is Emmy and the Incredible Shrinking Rat, but it is another good one.

It's not really a whole book about a mouse, but Reepicheep in The Voyage of the Dawn Treader by C. S. Lewis was always my favorite literary mouse.

My son loved Desperaux so that's a good one.

Is there a mouse in The Wind in the Willows? I can never remember what animals exactly are there....

ETA: The Great Christmas Kidnapping Caper and the others in that series are all about Mice. That was one of my favorites as a kid and my son loved it too.

If it's not too late...

The Mouse Wife by Rumer Godden, although I think it also works very well for adults,
Amos and Boris by William Steig is about a mouse and whale who form an unlikely friendship,
Doctor De Soto by Steig is about a mouse dentist with a fox as a patient,
Abel's Island also by Steig is a chapter book about a very sophisticated, citified mouse who becomes stranded on an island,
The Real Thief may have a mouse and it's another favorite chapter book by William Steig,
Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse by Kevin Henkes is about a kindergartener who gets excited about her new things and acts inappropriately and how she tries to make up for it,
If You Take a Mouse to School by Laura Numeroff is part of a series of the main character getting carried away,
The "City Mouse, Country Mouse" Aesop fable has many versions.

Enjoy!

Based on the examples from the original post, I thought chapter books were being sought. Several of the examples in #9 are picture books, for what it's worth.

Wind in the Willows has mice in the chapter on Christmas where the mice come to sing carols to Mole in his home when they are visiting. It is very sweet. However, there are no starring roles by mice.

Still, a child who likes mice stories is sure to like Rat, Mole, Badger, and Toad, right?? I did as a child.

I've only read the first Mouse Guard book, but was nicely impressed by the story line AND the illustrations.
