I saw my doctor yesterday for a checkup, and she said that the only thing keeping me from losing weight at this point is my hormones. *heavy sigh* So, that means another custom prescription every month, and hopefully, within another dozen or so weeks, something will finally kick in and/or get balanced, a teensy bit, and then pounds will actually come off the way they're supposed to. :/

Laura I am on medicine for my thyroid. I use to use that as an excuse to not be able to lose weight. I have been on medicine for about 10 years or more. It has taken work but the weight is finally coming off. This past year my script changed and I had energy and exercised more and weight came off. You will get those hormones balanced and see that weight come off.

I notice that when I am reading a good book while exercising I wind up pushing myself harder. I get into the book and don't even realize how much time has passed while reading. It really is helpful!! I just read Postcards from Cedar Key and found myself really enjoying the book that the time flew by at the gym. I need more books like that.

Happy Reading All!

I like sweet potatoes. I take one in to work for lunch: I cook it in the microwave until it is soft. The flesh is sweet enough and it fills up my stomach. It is also not only high in vitamin A, but has anti-inflammatory properties!

Good for you!

I often think I should do a short run for charity. Today we went to the beach, and my four year old and I went exploring, and then ran back to the others - I thought it was a good opportunity to do a Chariots of Fire impression, in the name of getting fit. I have to admit I jogged steadily for a couple of minutes before I started puffing, but my 4 year old just kept running. Where do kids get so much energy from?!

I shall update my ticker with my weight of 2 days ago, because I hit another kilo mark, going downwards. Today was my sister's birthday, though, and we went out for lunch after the beach. She chose Brazilian churrasco (you know, where they bring round just about every different type of roast meat, and you just have to taste everything) - and the scales have climbed back up slightly. :0/

From a recent New England Journal of Medicine:

Presumptions

Just as it is important to recognize that some widely held beliefs are myths so that we may move beyond them, it is important to recognize presumptions, which are widely accepted beliefs that have neither been proved nor disproved, so that we may move forward to collect solid data to support or refute them. Instead of attempting to comprehensively describe all the data peripherally related to each of the six presumptions shown in Table 2Table 2Presumptions about Obesity., we describe the best evidence.
Value of Breakfast

Presumption number 1: Regularly eating (versus skipping) breakfast is protective against obesity.

Two randomized, controlled trials that studied the outcome of eating versus skipping breakfast showed no effect on weight in the total sample. However, the findings in one study suggested that the effect on weight loss of being assigned to eat or skip breakfast was dependent on baseline breakfast habits.

Early Childhood Habits and Weight

Presumption number 2: Early childhood is the period in which we learn exercise and eating habits that influence our weight throughout life.

Although a person's BMI typically tracks over time (i.e., tends to be in a similar percentile range as the person ages), longitudinal genetic studies suggest that such tracking may be primarily a function of genotype rather than a persistent effect of early learning. 21 No randomized, controlled clinical trials provide evidence to the contrary.

Value of Fruits and Vegetables

Presumption number 3: Eating more fruits and vegetables will result in weight loss or less weight gain, regardless of whether any other changes to one's behavior or environment are made.

It is true that the consumption of fruits and vegetables has health benefits. However, when no other behavioral changes accompany increased consumption of fruits and vegetables, weight gain may occur or there may be no change in weight.

Weight Cycling and Mortality

Presumption number 4: Weight cycling (i.e., yo-yo dieting) is associated with increased mortality.

Although observational epidemiologic studies show that weight instability or cycling is associated with increased mortality, such findings are probably due to confounding by health status. Studies of animal models do not support this epidemiologic association.

Snacking and Weight Gain

Presumption number 5: Snacking contributes to weight gain and obesity.

Randomized, controlled trials do not support this presumption. Even observational studies have not shown a consistent association between snacking and obesity or increased BMI.

Built Environment and Obesity

Presumption number 6: The built environment, in terms of sidewalk and park availability, influences the incidence or prevalence of obesity.

According to a systematic review, virtually all studies showing associations between the risk of obesity and components of the built environment (e.g., parks, roads, and architecture) have been observational. Furthermore, these observational studies have not shown consistent associations, so no conclusions can be drawn.

Way to go, all you runners! I'm envious. :)

Down one more pound, thankfully. I do try to avoid processed foods as much as I can, but I do eat a few of them. Nothing in particular (aside from the occasional Kraft Mac & Cheese), rather I'm hungry and home and it's quick and easy. And even then, I try to find the healthiest version of the processed food that I can, if there is such a thing.

Well, still no weight loss progress in weeks, but I haven't gained either, so that's a plus.

In other news, I finished the race this weekend. I shouldn't really call it a "race", because for me, it wasn't really a race at all. I ended up finishing the 7K in 1:09:21 and out of 1781 participants, I came in 1679, BUT I did finish and I got a medal and I feel like I accomplished something and I want to do another one, and I want to do better, so now I've got a challenge for myself!

I'll post some pics up later today if I get a chance. =)

That is very cool, David. I admire your participation. I've yet to join any kind of walk or run. Maybe someday...

I see that 7K equals about 4.3 miles. Back in the days when I used to speed-walk, I could do 1.8 miles (about 2.9 K) in about half an hour. I bet it would take me much more time now. When the weather warms up, I might time myself again. Maybe we could do some comparisons here, if you'd like. Or...if someone wants to start a separate exercise/walkathon thread, that might be fun as well. We could keep track of those "thons" in which we participate, always trying to improve our own individual record.

"Whatcha" think?

Well done, David! I'm always meaning to think about signing up for one of these ... somethings. Good for you for actually getting out there and doing it.

As for my weight, I'm still on that dratted see-saw. It didn't help that I took the kids to visit their 18 month old cousin (whom they met for the first time this weekend), and we ended up staying for dinner ... and I put on nearly 2kg since I posted (>15 humouress::) about my lowest weight for a while. Fortunately, the scales did start tipping back the other way again.

I am going to try to listen to The Count of Monte Cristo on my Kindle while walking. Everyone in another thread was saying how great it was, and it is LONG so hopefully I will keep on walking longer so I can keep on listening.

My goal is to be able to walk 5 miles in less than two hours by the end of the summer and hopefully fit into the black leather coat that I got for $6 at the thrift store.

I actually lost 1 inch off of my hips & thighs while we were on vacation in Istanbul! Walking all those stairs & steep hills really paid off. I can't wait to go again, even though by the end of the week my knees were very sore. Knowing that I really need to be in better shape next time should keep me motivated.

Well, I'm on vacation and you know what that does to any diet. I have been trying to stay good (only half bowl of ice cream, no appetizers) but I feared that my new addiction to Lemon Drop Martinis would make my progress backward instead of forward, but when I was at the spa yesterday, I decided to step on the scale and see how bad it was.

Much to my surprise it showed an 8 pound loss!
Fugured it had to be wrong so I'm only going to post 4 - but that's great in place of a gain!

Mar 21, 2013, 11:22 am

Congratulations Cheli. It is difficult to curb eating when on vacation.

I lost a lot of weight last year because I was in a lot of pain. After the neck fusion surgery, I wasn't hungry because of the pain level. I'm proud that six months later, except for a few pounds, I've kept the weight off.

I do note though that I'm slowing getting back to my bad habits and snacking at night. Stress is a big trigger for me. I've been very busy at work and thus snack at my desk and when I come home.

I hope you have a lovely vacation.

Well no change for me this week. That is better then gaining and I will take it. I need to get my motivation back. I do walk every day with my dog I just need to walk faster. My fast walks seem to happen on the weekends. Once this weather gets warmer I will be able to go outside for longer walks. Right now it is just to cool to enjoy them. I need to get back to the gym on a daily basis.

I've adjusted the total for 3 lost tickers (countrylife, dorsvenabili and rosalita) - we'd love to see you back when you're feeling ready. There are still a few (5) tickers that don't seem to have been updated since we started. Please join in - but no pressure!

Here are some pics from my race a couple weekends back, the Get Lucky 7K in Chicago.

There were a LOT of people there! (1791 participants in the 7K, and somewhere over 1400 in the 1/2 marathon) - and did I mention it was C.O.L.D.?! Because it was about 30, with a wind chill of negative arctic!! It turns out they had warmer temps at the Polar Dash that took place in January. Go figure.

I will be updating my tracker tomorrow. I haven't lost anything lately. So far I am down and I hope it stays that way for tomorrow. I will be heading out to Zumba in about 30 minutes! Second time today I will be doing Zumba!!

>72 tapestry100:: Good for you - a loss after a gain in weight shows determination.

I will update the tracker's tracker soon. I try to get to it at least once a month, but it's been school holidays (which also means my tracker starts moving in the other direction, which I'll have to own up to) - more food, and all the classes take a break, too.

I refuse to admit that I'm middle aged or spreading; unfortunately, I also seem to be refusing to admit to having to actively do something to prevent the same.

Hello Friends! I'm sorry that I haven't been on in a while. I need to update my tracker - I think. I know I haven't lost much, if any weight, the last several weeks. BUT I was talked to my trainer and I've lost 13% body fat! That means that also my weight might not have gone down, I'm a much leaner person than I was when we started! Woooowwwhhhhoooooo!!

Also I decided to try listening to my audiobook on my runs this weekend and that worked really well. (The book is Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World by Jack Weatherford.). I've also officially started training for my 1/2 marathon!

Mag 11, 2013, 4:13 pm

Well, up .4 lb today--hopefully it's water retention. In related news, joined a gym this week. I have gotten so out of shape, and had been thinking about increasing exercise, but the impetus really is that we are having our bathroom remodeled and are without a shower. I had an introductory session with a trainer, and as a result was so sore I could hardly walk for a couple of days.

81humouress
Mag 16, 2013, 6:30 am

>80 banjo123:: When you just start exercising after a long break is when you really need the bathroom functioning, for a long, hot soak, to minimise the soreness. I hope you felt better for it after you got over being sore.

Folks; I just went over to update the Group ticker, but we seem to have lost a few of the individual tickers. Of 26 starters, we've lost (or I am unable to see on my laptop; not sure if it's a technical glitch) 11. That does include a couple of people who have intentionally dropped out or removed their tickers for now.

Could you check your tickers, please? Thanks.

83SqueakyChu
Mag 16, 2013, 7:45 pm

The tickers are not lost. Some of them are just not showing up as graphics. If you click on the "x" of the "lost" tickers, that will take you to the ticker factory page. Then, if you use the back arrow, the original ticker magically returns. Weird!

The thing about salads is I don't feel motivated to eat them unless they're somewhat interesting, otherwise it's just chewing through all that cellulose while trying to convince myself it's all in a good cause.

But I've got a couple that work for me : I've bought a bag of baby spinach and rocket / arugula (much more palatable than iceberg) and have it either with salmon and pinenuts or prosciutto and rock melon. It seems to have got the scales heading in the right direction this week (finally!). It doesn't take too long to put together, either (which is another thing that can put me off - too much slicing and dicing).

combined total of 19.3 miles over two days. Yup - crazy. You won't catch me doing that ;0)

Best of luck, and don't forget to show off your medals.

Myself, we went away for the long weekend. The hotel had the same make of scales that I've been using, but I seemed to have gained about a kilo and a half. So either the scales here have been pandering to me, or I enjoyed myself a bit too much. I suspect a combination. But holidays should be enjoyed.

When I stepped onto the scales when we got back, I had gone up, but today, I've gone back down again, thankfully. In fact, it was my lowest ever in the past year (1.5kg away from my goal); but it could have been a blip on the scales. No matter; I'm sticking with it, and it's on my chart.

(104) Hehehe... humouress...

I've been struggling with the weight, managing somehow to avoid permanently gaining above my 'starter' weight.

About three weeks ago I signed up for a membership with the local hospital's fitness center. I've been going twice a week, just to swim. Today I swam laps for about 25 minutes, then did some cycling in the deeper section for another 5 minutes.

The scale shows me to be six pounds below my starting weight!

I've also been trying to control portions, so that has helped, I am sure. :)

Did a couple more races! On June 21, did the Capitol Mile/5K in Lansing (46:14 - certainly not my best time, but i hadn't trained in 5 weeks due to a bad ankle, so ended up walking the entire thing) and then the Proud to Run 10K in Chicago on June 29 (1:30:34 - again, could be better, but still really hadn't trained and each race I've run, my minutes per mile has improved, so progress!!)

My husband is a foodie, fortunately / unfortunately, so since coming back home, my weight has been creeping up in a see-saw fashion. I've got to re-establish some exercise routines (and, much as I dislike going to the gym, I think that's on the cards). I've pretty much got the kids' schedules sorted out, so now I've got to build in mine - but when it comes to crunch time, getting ready to go out, I feel a bit lazy and I'll make excuses, like 'the clouds look a bit dark. That is wonderful Fuzzi!

I am bummed today because I am up a pound. This seems completely unfair because I have started a new fitness regime, and am to the gym 4 mornings a week at 5:45 AM. I am actually liking the workouts, and I do feel more fit, except that I managed to sprain my wrist in a cycling class, and now have to wear a wrist brace. And I wanted to lose, not gain! Ott 21, 2013, 8:51 am

OK, I know I've been absent around these parts lately. I had some anxiety issues, and I've kept to myself, including online connections for awhile. I'm so excited to see everyone still excited for their progress. Banjo123, Don't be discouraged! Fuzzi is right! I've been working out for over a year now, and my weight has CREPT down, BUT I've lost a significant amount of body fat. A small increase in weight is not a bad thing when you're exercising. And if you're feeling more fit, that's the important thing!

I updated my ticker this morning, and I've lost 15lbs since we started! I probably won't make it to my goal weight this year (that still leaves me 32lbs to go), but at least I'm on the right track!

I also "ran" the Detroit Free Press International Half Marathon yesterday. We started in Detroit, went over the Ambassador Bridge into Windsor, did a couple of miles in Canada and then took the tunnel back into Detroit. It was a lot of fun, but I know I really need to train better for my next half in February. I'd barely trained at all for this one, but my time was 3hrs 37mins, so I don't think that was all that bad at all!

Keep up the good work everybody!!

GO FUZZI!

Morphy, sorry about your appetite. Once in a while I will be off my feed, with stress or grief. Though usually I have the opposite reaction. The trick is not to boomerang, when the appetite comes back. But even if it feels like a cheat, it counts. And it's not really a cheat--think of all the weight you lost when it was hard, and you had to work at it harder than anyone else did.

crazy4reading, it's that appetite that messes us up!

I went back to the gym on Friday, the first time since before our vacation, about 6 or 7 weeks, yet I still lost weight. Why did I still lose weight? I'm managing to continue my portion control...and when I crave sweets, I have some Italian ices in the freezer. At 100 calories each, and no fats, they are helping me resist overeating. :)

Fuzzi I think I need to have those Italian ices in the freezer too. I love to eat watermelon and that helps with the sweet cravings.

Well today I did Insanity. I haven't done it for possibly a year. I could tell the difference in myself from not exercising that much. I had to change some of the exercises since I cannot do push ups. Hopefully I will start seeing the scale go in the right direction.

There's a problem; my scales are going in the wrong direction :0(

I haven't started a proper routine of exercises since moving; mostly I seem to be ferrying the kids around between classes. There are some things I could do in the mornings, but I just can't convince myself to rush off to them (not being a morning person). I treasure the couple of hours in the mornings that are kid-free, before I have to bring the first one home for lunch. I have, though, started a pilates class once a week, and I think I'm going to have to swim when my son has his lesson - for the sole purpose of being able to fish him out in time to pick his brother up from school. Otherwise, he splashes about quite happily in the middle while I can only walk impotently around the side.

I lost my appetite for a couple of days, too, but I decided I was going in for something. Today, I felt like continually nibbling, even when I'd eaten enough. Unfortunately, I seem to have reached the point where if I don't eat much, my body just goes into hibernation mode and stores it. I really do need to start exercising soon - especially as we have a wedding to go to in a couple of weeks time.

Don't forget to stay hydrated folks; especially if you're exercising.

Four pounds left to lose, to reach my first goal of a 22 pound weight loss! Woo! I'm psyched!!!

Fuzzi, that's great!

Okay, added my ticker back. Used to be a 20 pound loss ticker but I've lost that plus more so have now made it a 40 pound loss ticker. Or do I start a second ticker?

161SqueakyChu
Modificato: Nov 5, 2013, 10:47 pm

Start a second ticker. Wonderful news!

What book were you reading when you reached your first goal of 20 pounds?

162Morphidae
Nov 6, 2013, 8:14 am

Well, the tracker website is being a bugger. It's not letting me create a second tracker. It keeps making them both look the same. So if I do my first 20 pound loss, they both show the 20 pound loss. If I do the second ticker with the 11 pound loss, they both show the 11 pound loss!

How do I make them look different? Do I need to make two different accounts?

163humouress
Nov 6, 2013, 8:50 pm

It's a while since I've done one, but I'm pretty sure all my tickers are on the same account. Is there a "create a new ticker" line / button you can click?

164fuzzi
Modificato: Nov 12, 2013, 8:07 am

Did you ever figure that out, humouress? I know I've made more than one ticker before, when I was first trying to keep track of my books read.

BTW, as of yesterday, 11/11/13, I have lost 19 lbs 12 oz, or 19.75 pounds!

Thanks for all the encouragement, it has really helped me. :)

Addendum: ticker has been updated.

Not before Thanksgiving, but despite it, and only four days after...

...I have met my goal of a 22 pound weight reduction!!!

Yesterday I finished reading A Sending of Dragons, and finished up my Sunday with a reread of The Tough Winter.

Next challenge: 30 additional pounds in 2014...

Woo hoo! fuzzi and Morphy!!

Me, I've regained most of the weight I lost (I'm blaming my husband), and am hovering at around 3kg below my starting point :0(

I haven't had the courage to update my ticker yet, though.

Dic 5, 2013, 1:24 pm

Hooray Morphy!

I have also started to regain some of the weight back. I am hoping to get some inspiration in avoiding holiday treats, and then I can finish the challenge next year.

Everyone should put at least one final weight on their ticker this month...even if you haven't been keeping up during the year. I'll do the final tally after year's ends. So far, Morphy's the champ...with her two attained goals!

I went to update, but couldn't find my ticker. I ended up about 10 pounds down over the course of the year. So, I didn't make my goal, but at least it's the right direction! I am hoping to be better in 2014--or if I am not better, at least to continue the slow-poke weight loss plan.

Thank you, SqueakyChu, for organizing this!

You're welcome!

I couldn't find your ticker either, Rhonda, but I put in your final total.

Others can tell me when their final total is in.

I kind of fizzled out with this challenge midway through it. Losing weight seems not to be as much fun as reading. Anyway, many of you succeeded brilliantly in this weight loss challenge. The stats will be finalized after the new year begins.

Happy 2014 everyone!

193humouress
Dic 29, 2013, 8:43 pm

OK, I've updated my ticker.

*sigh* Having lost about 7.5kg at my best this year, I've now put a lot of it back on, and am now only 1.9kg lower than my starting weight. I blame it on my husband. And December - on top of all the other celebrations, both my kids have December birthdays - and guess who ends up eating all the left-over cake? It's a hard life ;0)

Madelein, I know you said you'd be too busy to host a thread like this in 2014, but any chance you could create one in the new group, Shelley turtle and all, and just let it run itself?I think there'll be lots of takers, what with New Year resolutions, overdoing the end of year celebrations, etc etc. :0) (batting eyelashes)

194SqueakyChu
Dic 29, 2013, 10:23 pm

I blame it on my husband.

Haha! Humouress, I think we should all find someone, like you did, on whom to blame our non-weight loss. I barely lost any weight at all, but I got a lots of books read. That's what's important. Right? ;)

Anyway, we did stimulate others to do well with this competition...and soon we'll have the stats to show who did the very best.

Everyone have a healthy, happy new year!

Vota: Do others want this thread to continue into 2014?

Corrispondenza attuale: 5, No 0
Here's what I'll do. If the voters say yes, I'll give the code for message #1 to anyone who wants to take over this task. I don't want to run it again myself.

195SqueakyChu
Dic 31, 2013, 11:20 am

Now...I need a volunteer to whom to give the code. Who wants to do it?

Alert!

Today is the last day of the year. If you haven't done so yet...and are still with us...log into your ticker with your final weight and let me know here that you've done so.

Thanks!

Note: I'll only be giving the final report about those participants who either have lost 100% of their goal weight or who report in with a "final" weight.

Humouress,

It looks as if you and I both lost only 22% of our weight goal for 2014. At this rate, we should reach our goal by 2018 or 2019. Ever onward! :)
