"indie-alt"? What does that even mean? Seriously, the terms "indie" and "alternative" have been drained of any real definitive meaning. (Not that I dispute the talent of Yuck.) I just find this labeling thing has gotten ridiculous:

The term "alternative" never had any meaning. It is some music industry label or other but it has never meant much. Our local "alternative" station played "Sweet Caroline" yesterday, to give you an idea. It also plays "Somebody that I used to know" and other top hits ad nauseum. Seems like top forty with occasional Nirvana breaks, if you ask me.

I guess "indie" still has a little bit of meaning!

To wax hippie, I don't get hung up on labels, man. This is especially true in the music industry, whose business practice is even more questionable than the Big 6 publishing congolmerates. The music industry corrupt? I know, my mind was blown at the very thought of it.

While "alternative" has lost any and all meaning, I do find the prefix alt- to be a nice means of differentiation. Like the alt-country of Wilco vs mainstream country pop of Shania Twain and alt-comedy stylists Patton Oswalt and Brian Posehn vs. middlebrow shlock-slingers Jeff Dunham and Gallagher.

I actually toyed with the idea of going to a concert this week. The English Beat are playing tonight. Are they touring with original band members etc. ? From years ago I have a couple of their albums on tape from a "punk"?, or whatever their music was classified as, radio show which started at 12:00 am midnight. I enjoyed their stuff, it seemed refreshing in contrast to what was played on ad heavy commercial radio. Oh yeah it had saxophones in it also or synthesizers tuned to sax - which I enjoy.

The last time I went to a concert I was accosted by a group of 8 or so people {oddly all 5 feet tall at best} convinced they were security and desperately needed to see my i.d. which I had already displayed. I guess that was my fault, stupidly going to a concert by myself instead of bringing a group of droogs carrying softball bats feigning just leaving a ball game. ;-)

I still go concerts - last Friday I went to see Todd Rundgren who has transformed himself into some electronic dance act. I'm not sure that it amounted to much musically but I was mightily entertained, couldn't stop laughing for the first 30 minutes at Todd's dancing.
The following night I went to see Nick Harper (Roy Harper's son) who is a brilliant guitarist but a strained singer. He was supported by Carol Laula, fantastic Scottish singer-songwriter who does so little nowadays that it feels like she's in semi-retirement; and Gavin Moore, son of Luka Bloom, nephew of Christy Moore, and who proves that talent sometimes doesn't run in the family.
Tonight I'm away to see some local talent - Sparrow & The Workshop who my partner has decided she really likes (I need to hear more to make a decision); Teencanteen, an all-girl band who are praised by BMX Bandits and Teenage Fanclub which is good enough for me; and LAW, who are know almost nothing about.

Good to know there's someone around who still references Teenage Fanclub.

Tim Hecker is more my style for sure. Not a big music fan, I listen almost exclusively to Michael Cretu's Enigma project since I first discovered that in the 1990s.

I dabble in electronic music, create some weird soundscapes...but when I listen to Hecker, it makes me want to snap my MIDI keyboard over my knee and burn it as kindling.

I often edit to him, as well.

Purchased a fine collection of John Williams work from a wide range of movies he's composed the score to. Many, many recognizable pieces as well as quite a few I'm not familiar with but still with his distinct style. Got me to wondering what the reputation of movie composers is, outside of their business, in the broader world of symphony music. I can't name any modern composers of the last fifty years that did not score for Hollywood. While that's largely a personal failing, I believe they don't easily rise to public consciousness in our era if there isn't a motion picture attached.

Most of those were emigrés to tHollywood in the 1930s and actually had substantial composing careers outside of film; Herrmann was the same, but home-grown in the US.

This happened in the 1980s, for the most part, and this coincided with the rise of the new minimalists - Reich, Glass, Adams and (in the UK) Michael Nyman; and they were recruited fairly quickly to write for film as artistic commissions like any other. It has led to some iconic scores - in fact, in the case of Glass' music for Koyaanisqatsi, almost too iconic, as it gets re-used almost everywhere.

I have no problems with John Williams, though I find it fun to listen to his scores and try to spot the influence. Close Encounters was very much out of Rachmaninov, especially the First Symphony; ST2 - the Wrath of Khan at one point had an almost direct quote from Prokofiev's ballet score for 'Romeo and Juliet'. Sometimes, though, his homages can be a bit eclectic - the 'Hymn to the Fates' in 'The Phantom Menace' was very close indeed to a piece by Sir Arthur Bliss, who is generally known for his music to Alexander Korda's 1935 film of Wells' 'Things to Come' and not much else.

His Symphony in F sharp falls into my personal list of "the best music you've never heard of".

I had heard from Bob Shaw and Ian Watson about working with Kubrick (on the treatment for 'A.I.') and so had some insight from first hand on what working with Kubrick could be like. This all seems highly consistent.

Given that amongst British sf fans (who remembered him as a fan rather than as a professional author), Arthur was known as "Ego" Clarke, perhaps that suggests the only way anyone could work with Kubrick and emerge with their sanity intact.

Frederic Raphael's book EYES WIDE OPEN about the excruciating process of writing a script with Kubrick is very instructive--if you haven't got it, seek it out.

Perhaps diverging a little from the topic but there have been several music group documentaries that I found interesting recently.

The Beatles “Get Back” of course being the most popular I am sure. I am on the second of Peter Jackson’s trilogy where they attempt to throw Ringo into the volcano. So far I find every hour fascinating.

Not sure if the mention belongs here or in our movies thread, but "Amazing Grace" on Netflix is absolutely fantastic. It's the restored 1971 film of Aretha's Franklin's live recording of her bestselling gospel album. I had fun with looking for Mick Jagger in the audience. Wouldn't call myself a big gospel fan, but her singing is, of course, phenomenal.

A couple of days ago I went down a YouTube rabbit hole and ended up looking at Shirley Horn videos. The cover for the album You Won't Forget Me looked vaguely familiar and I was wondering if I owned it in the early 90's. Not only did I own it, I must have heard it a million times but inexplicably had completely forgotten about it. Listening to it again every track rearranged my brain.
